The Islanders

Yes the flat cap, so that means making roster decisions that reflect that. I would trade Bura, re-sign Saad, give a landeskog extension a long, hard look before giving him more than 6.5 and find a way to bring in a defensively responsible d-man (ala Petro in Vegas).

Also, bura was wildly inconsistent at the time of his signing. Donskoi was streaky and has continued to be. Saad’s two way play is significantly better than both, he is more consistent and can play up and down the lineup. I’d love to see his point totals if paired with Mack and rants for a prolonged period.

I definitely agree with everything you said and I think if saad comes back he should take top line spot for sure. I don’t see how we can just decide to not bring back the captain and lose him for nothing so I think we have to bring him back. If we can find a trade partner for Bura and Donskoi I’m all over that too. The question at that point is how much of a shake up does the team actually want? They seem like a really close group and that much turn over is asking for chemistry issues

Trading for Eichel or Jones sounds like the Toronto solution to Colorado's woes.

The Avalanche were 1st in goals for, 3rd best in goals against this season. It sucks that they lost to Vegas, but these were the two best teams in the NHL in 2021.

The two most glaring issues in the series were physicality and the 2nd line center role. Two players that Colorado has been linked to in the past (Blake Coleman, Nick Foligno) are free agents this summer and would go a long way towards addressing the former.

Colorado needs to add some grit to the back end too (I like the Jamie Oleksiak suggestions I'm reading). I know people hated Ian Cole, but I was worried about that trade when it happened because Sakic gave him away for nothing and I was concerned injuries would hit again. Lo and behold Erik Johnson suffers a major injury a week later, which eventually leads to Sakic bringing Nemeth back, who in turn does everything in his power to ensure the the Avalanche lose the series to Vegas.

I'm not sure what Colorado is going to do at center. It's pretty clear Nazem Kadri isn't the answer (and JT Compher is an even worse answer when Kadri is injured/suspended). Bednar didn't trust Alex Newhook enough to play him there when the games mattered most - much to my ire considering he was making things happen playing 6 minutes per night as a fourth line winger.

regular season is just a mirage. The avalanche dmen combined with the smaller, faster forwards got held in their own end with ease. Girard is too small, nemeth was big but didn’t have much of a mean streak, Graves is a giant teddy bear too. Jones with byram on his left would change the entire dynamic

Phil Danault could be an option if he becomes available in free agency. The Avs would need to shed some money to sign him, but they could roll with him and Kadri at 2/3 C.

His defence would be most welcome. I’d be concerned about his lack of playoff production, but if you kept Kadri he could really just focus on defence come playoff time.

I like Girard and i rate him, but i suppose, if there was an option to trade him for Seth Jones, it would be an upgrade. Toews-Makar and Jones-Byram as top4 homestly sounds great.
There is no doubt Pietrangelo was a big factor and while all of Toews,Girard and Makar are great, none of them is really 1D of Pietros quality (yet).
That said, i guess i would prefer to see upgrade on attack, bonafide star player for a second line. Thats what Vegas had with Marchesseault and we did not.

assuming the Avs will move on from most of the UFAs, trying to keep only Lando, Saad and Grubauer, Id take a good look on bringing in these guys that can become available: Danault, Bernier, Driedger, Oleksiak, Haula and Nosek.

I think this would address all our teams needs, and actually leaves tons of cap space to re-sign Jones/Bura and down the line Mack/Byram, etc. Doesn't seem impossible either.

I think Johnson's cap hit is $6 million if he remains with the Avs as a #6 dman, not the $2 million that is shown here which puts you over the cap by almost $3 million. Plus, you have Johnson going to Columbus so I'm not sure he can play on both teams at the same time. Somebody is going to have to play #6 Dman and there's also likely going to have to be a #7 Dman on the roster as well.

Also, I highly doubt Saad signs for $ 4 million. Not after what he made on his last contract and what he just did in the playoffs.

I have Johnson being bought out by CLB and re-signing with the Avs, similar to what Orpik did with WSH where Colorado bought him out. I think Saad wants to stay here, and his regular season numbers aren't anything special. It's possible he goes elsewhere for more money, but we could technically sign him for more and not Coleman or even get Coleman for less. There is a bit of flexibility in the numbers.

Landeskog, Danault and Saad’s contracts are underestimated. Cut Bellemare and Soderberg.

Not sure about Danault, but I'm giving him 5 years which is a pretty good term. I'm also giving him a good roster position (i.e a scoring one). Landeskog I'm giving 8 years, so I'm hoping that brings down his AAV, but you aren't exactly wrong on any point either. There is wiggle room though like you said with Soda and Bellemare but also with Coleman and honestly Compher as well.

I just don't see Saad taking a $4 million dollar deal. I think he's likely looking for closer to $5 or $6 million.

Would Johnson consider resigning with Colorado for $2 million when his current contract is $6 million? Maybe, but that seems like wishful thinking. Plus he is very injury prone so someone else like a McDonald or Barron will likely see plenty of ice time at an NHL minimum contract amount.

Moving Girard would likely be easy to do given his age, his skillset, and his current contract. Seattle hopefully takes Donskoi or Graves or Compher and you could possibly move one of the other two that remain after Seattle takes someone.

Not sure how easy it will be to move Kadri given his 10 team no move contract. Not sure if Columbus is on his list or not. If not, he could easy veto the trade just like he did when Toronto tried to move him to Calgary.

No matter how you slice it, it's going to be tough to sign Landeskog, Saad, Makar, Grubaur, and Jost to reasonable contracts unless a couple of them take very team friendly deals.

I just can’t see the Avs moving Kadri until next TD even though I support the move.

Not sure what's going on in Sakic's head, you could be right though.

I'd love to see a Kadri/Girard for Eichel or a Kadri/Girard for Jones move. Either would likely make the Avs a better team come next year's playoffs. Easier said than done though.

Do you think the other players want to see him back? Does he even want to play for the Avs again? He looked like a sulking Duchene even before he took out his frustration with a headshot.

I don’t view either move as a rebuild or fire sale. To me, either option is an upgrade. 2C is the most pressing issue. Trading Girard would be bittersweet because his arrival in Denver heralded the rebuild. We had no real puck moving ability. It all started with him. But, he also offers the greatest trade value. Same with Kadri. I’d try and package them with Compher and throw on a pick as a sweetener. Trading Girard makes our puck moving slightly worse but hopefully preserved the breakout and transition game when playing heavier PO teams. So, I would not be afraid to put all of our chips into the middle of the table. It’s time.

Nah, they probably realize he deserved to be suspended but also feel he was treated unfairly punishment wise.

Trade Kadri and girard for Jones and merzlikins

trade compher and pick for miles wood.

Trade Donskoi for picks

buyout Johnson and Seattle takes Graves.

sign danault
sign Coleman
Sign Perry at league minimum.
Sign saad
Sign cheap LHD, oleksiak?

Saad - Mackinnon - Rantanen
Landeskog - Danault - Burakovsky
Coleman - Newhook - Wood
Nuke - Jost - Perry/Ranta

Toews - Makar
Byram - Jones
Oleksiak - Timmins

merzlikins
Francouz

wasn’t able to do the math on the money but this would be my wish list for an ideal balanced team, highly doubtful there’s this much of a shake up either.

Wonder if Cozens is available from Buffalo. Even back when we drafted Byram, I thought if we pick a F, Cozens would be the perfect player for 2C. He seems to have progressed nicely since then.

Given the trouble they’re having with Michael and Reinhart, I’d say no.

Ha ha, talk to text sucks. I’m too lazy to correct the two names, but I think you know who I’m talking about.

I was under the impression that Byram was getting severely overlook by other fanbases but judging by the number of treads on the mainboards trying to trade for him looks like I was wrong...
