Don't have to trade Kadri, ride out his contract next year, let him walk, sign Zibanejad who's a UFA in 2022 and if the Rangers can't resign him
Girard and Newhook for Suzuki
An overpayment, but solve that position once and for all.
Wouldn't trade Newhook for Suzuki straight up. You're under estimating his talent.
That's why you build the Jack Eichel mega package around Samuel Girard and Alex Newhook. I like Newhook as a prospect, but tell me Buffalo is going to get a better package elsewhere than Girard/Newhook/1st? Make it work salary wise by including a serviceable player like Donskoi/Compher/Graves and the increased cap hit ends up less than 2M. Make it work somehow.
I would KILL for Sakic to go big game hunting like that. MacKinnon/Eichel down the middle is drool worthy and Crosby/Malkin-esque.
Here are the positions I’d like to fill in the off-season.
Second line Centre, second pairing RHD, and Goaltender.
Outside of that I’d add a big bodied 4th line winger, but that’s just something you can get in free agency.
Landeskog - MacKinnon - Rantanen
Saad - XXX - Burakovsky
Newhook - Jost - Nichushkin
XXX - XXX - Kaut/Ranta
Toews - Makar
Byram - XXX
XXX - Timmins
XXX
Francouz
You only need the top-4 RHD if you move Girard to fill the 2C spot. The Avs can use their 1st round pick and prospects to get the defenceman and goaltender. You can keep Compher at 4th line wing if the cap allows it, but I’ve moved on from him Graves, Donskoi, Kadri, and EJ in this scenario for cap purposes.
I also don’t think the second pair RHD has to be an incredible defenceman. I mean Jones would be a dream, but just a steady defenceman is fine in that spot because I think Bo Byram is making a good jump next year.
It's weird how none of these mock lineups have Stastny listed.
JT Miller or Bo Horvat would be nice additions. I suspect Miller for sure will be traded after his comments when the season ended for them.
Be nice to snag him with our 1st and a small sweetener.

I am not against it for 3C but if that reunion was going to happen wouldn't it have happened already?
I don't understand the Girard hate. He did not have a good series against Vegas. But he was also playing on his off side, and playing with Graves, which was a poor match. But imagine if he was paired, on his preferred Left Side, with a healthy EJ. Just an entirely different situation. Girard also got shifted with Nemeth who, aside from Satan himself, was the worst pairing for Girard.
If G is put in a position to succeed he will do it. Put him in, say, Montreal and he's not seeing any PK, plays PP1, gets mostly ozone starts and is well protected physically as their only small dman and their only pmd on the team.
Here he's asked to play like he's 6'2 man and he isn't one. Never will be.
I used Montreal as an example but there's at least a dozen teams in the league that could use Girard in a good way without getting most of the bad side.
If you're paying that price, it's gotta be for someone more established. You can probably add another piece or 2 maybe 1st rounder and get Eichel for thatGirard and Newhook for Suzuki

Does Miller play centre, or wing for Van?

Playing on the left side would not stop Girard from being terrified of a strong forecheck or stop him from being rag dolled infront of the net.
I assure you Montreal has noooooo interest in Sammy G. None. He is precisely the type of d-man they don’t like. They strictly prohibit their blueliners from jumping into the play.
The way you make Sam work in the postseason is give him comparable talent alongside him. Quit pairing him with goddamned boat anchors who can’t do anything with the puck and he’ll be a whole lot better.
If we need to insulate G that much, we need to start accepting he’s more of a #3/4 than a #2. I still also don’t see how it solves his defensive issues in tighter games and poise against heavy forecheckers.
Im pretty sure hes played both. I seem to recall him taking draws. Maybe hes like a Landy winger/C hybrid. I like Miller alot and I think he would be a great fit on this team. Not sure what it would cost but I would love to have him or Horvat.Does Miller play centre, or wing for Van?
Yeah just like Makar, he needed big Gravy to do the heavy lifting for hi- oh wait... He was the one who did the heavy lifting on that pair and made Graves look good not the other way around which is what elite talent actually does, make others around them better. Imagine that. How could Makar have possibly excelled while playing Graves, that's not supposed to happen based on your logic. It’s not insulation, it’s simply giving him more talent so that the opposition can’t isolate him. This is true of every elite talent in the league. If you don’t put enough talent around Connor McDavid, he gets isolated and the Oilers get swept by a thoroughly mediocre Winnipeg Jets team.
If anyone was being “insulated” it was Nemeth.
They are ready to draft Powers and they have Dahlin. Think he will settle for Girard + 1st ++ ? Jack has to have a list of teams he wont go to correct? If Joe can swing this deal without having to give up Bo or Newhook it would be hilarious.I don't know if I missed it or if it wasn't mentioned but Friedman was on Buffalo radio yesterday saying that the Sabres are also ready to move on from Eichel now?
****ing go and get him, Joe. I want the Avs version of Crosby/Malkin for the foreseeable future.
