Rumor: 2020-21 Trade Rumours and FA Part VIII: Intra-Playoff Edition?

That can’t happen. Next year can’t be a “let’s see if Newhook can play center” season. They need to do what puts them in the best position to win it all. They have to have a legit 2C and maybe even an upgrade at 3C.
It should have damn well happened in this series. JTC is a black hole at center. Should have put Newhook next to Saad full time.

Alright f*** it, here's what I would do.... Never gonna happen cause I guarantee Joe and the Avs think they are very close still and wont want to tinker too much with what's here. But if it were me I'd go swinging for the fences, all in next season...

- Trade Burakovsky for 2nd + 3rd round picks. Recoup the same return we gave up for him.
- Attach that same 2nd round pick to JT Compher and have Seattle select him in the ED.
- Trade Sam Girard straight up for Sean Couturier, and sign Couturier to a 6x48M extension.
- Buyout Erik Johnson
- Re-Sign Brandon Saad to a 4x20M contract.
- Re-Sign Landeskog to 7x50M
- Sign Linus Ullmark to a 3x12M contract.
- Trade Drew Helleson + 2022 3rd to Anaheim for Josh Manson

Landy - Mack - Mikko
Saad - Couturier - Newhook
Nuke - Kadri - Donskoi
LOC - Jost - Ranta/Kaut

Toews - Makar
Byram - Manson
Graves - Timmins

Ullmark
Francouz

Just doing quick math, that roster would come in at about ~78M, along with the EJ buyout carrying it to ~80M

Oh and I'd also keep Johanson around as the 3rd Goalie. I actually liked enough of what I saw from him this year with us that I'd trust him in the 3G spot and if Francouz struggles to play some 2G until we add a goalie at the deadline.

That would be a significant boost to our Center depth from this year. Next season Kadri walks.

This is the skeleton of the Avs team for next year, for me anyways:

Landeskog-MacKinnon-Rantanen
Saad-???-???
Newhook-Jost-Nichushkin
???-???-O’Connor

Toews-Makar
Girard-Byram
???-Timmins

Grubauer
???

This is definitely unlikely as I don’t anticipate we would be able to dump all the dead weight, nor will we be able to re-sign everyone.

Even if we got down to this roster, I’d be pushing to swap Girard for a legit 2C.

I really dont like the idea of Jost as a 3C. Keep him around as a 4C sure, and maybe he plays his way up the lineup next year. But IMO going into next season with him as the 3C again is a big failure. His defensive game is fine, he works like a dog every shift(Thanks to Nichushkin for getting him like that IMO)... But the offensive ability just isn't good enough to produce at an acceptable level for a 3C.

It's why I like the idea of getting a legit 2C, and instead of trading Kadri, slot him in as the 3C instead. Kadri's 4.5M cap hit is still fine money for a 3C, and it also takes a lot of pressure off Kadri to produce(His production was low for a 2C this year as well)... And if/when Kadri goes idiot mode in the playoffs again next year we're much better equipped to handle it.

We need to get bigger and stronger.

I sure hope it's unlikely because Tyson Jost is slotted in as your 3rd line centre when really, if you want to keep him on this team the only place he should be playing is on the 4th line replacing Bellemare.

We need to get bigger and stronger.

I’d argue we need to get more physical, but not necessarily bigger and stronger. We need guys like Blake Coleman, Tuch, hell even a healthy Calvert. Our bottom line players need to be relentless on the forecheck.

I don’t see Sakic really upgrading the second line, so upgrade the lower lines so that they act as a way to soften up the other team for Nate and crew.

With a legitimate 2C I think Jost would be fine as a 3C. He and Nuke create plenty of chances, they just don’t have finish. The fact that they create chances still means that you are forced to defend against them.

Sakic isn’t going to magically come up with a 2C and 3C, we are going to have to lose out somewhere

Eichel should be the primary target. Finally another superstar to add elite secondary scoring.

Experience in the back is absolutely key too. Watching the mass amount of giveaways which cost us this series, is way too painful.

Hey, on the plus side, surely that series cost Landy some money. Maybe we can re-sign him at a discount on the back of that pathetic performance.

My initial thoughts literally minutes after watching them lose.

Here's who you absolutely keep:
  • MacKinnon
  • Rantanen
  • Makar
  • Toews
  • Girard
  • Grubauer
  • Saad
  • Landeskog
  • O'Connor
  • Nichushkin (in a bottom six role)
Everyone else is expendable.

Potential C's to target and actually help this team next season:

David Krejci
Jack Eichel
Phillip Danault
Tomas Hertl
J.T. Miller

Give me one of those guys. Whether it's Danault as a UFA or if it's creating a super package for Jack Eichel that involves Samuel Girard and Alex Newhook, go big game hunting this offseason because I'll tell you what: if Vegas does not win the Stanley Cup, they are going big game hunting and that is our number one competition in the West next season.

God I'd love Hertl on this team, now that guy is a f***ing warrior. f*** it get Danault too let Gabe walk.

Left: Devon Toews ($4,100,000) - Samuel Girard ($5,000,000) - Jacob MacDonald ($725,000)

GOALTENDER (2)
Philipp Grubauer ($6,000,000) - Pavel Francouz ($2,000,000)

DETAILS
Roster Size: 20
Salary Cap: $81,500,000
Cap Hit: $81,041,666
Cap Space: $458,334

Jones for Byram, Graves, and Johnson
Couturier for Kadri, Kaut, and a pick

I’d be cool with Hertl or Reinhart if they can get either guy. Would offer a viable 2C option who could move to the wing if need be. Then you have some options in regards to Newhook’s development. You can try him at 2C, put him on the wing, or 3C.

Haven't caught up with all the post but I see a lot of trade Girard posts. He's on a sweetheart deal, it will be difficult to get fair deal of equal value. It shouldn't happen, instead we need to build around him. He needs insulation, a true stay at home big defenseman. Graves and Nemeth were such miscasts for that role and it pains me how poorly they flubbed the series with horrid play. We missed a healthy EJ big time for that.

Many of shouted Oleksiak for months, he would be perfect.

I actually think the Avs have a great chance to improve this off-season as long as Sakic remains as savvy as he’s been in the past.

It’s time to weaponize the prospects and picks within the organization. They’ve got a young core, so I don’t think it’s an issue to get aggressive with those assets for one off-season.

They can also shed some salary through the expansion draft and through trade to reshape their roster a little bit. I think even a guy like Graves can be moved on the open market. Move out some salary, get a 2C, and a goalie to replace Grubs when he goes to Edmonton in free agency.

I’m excited to see what Newhook and Byram look like next year in larger roles. An off-season of training and being more familiarized with the team system should help a lot.

I think Sakic is patient not dumb. Mackinnon's comments should motivate into making some big changes this season, he doesn't have the luxury not to with only 2 more seasons left before Mackinnon's UFA. If I remember correctly Bednar was kind of just a last minute hire because of Roy suddenly leaving. Sakic didn't really get to interview any other candidates for the job, he just had his Cbus guys recommend the most convenient choice they had available.

I wasnt even concerned about losing Mack before those comments were made today. If the Avs continue to bow out early I think you can kiss that discount everyone is assuming hes going to give the Avs out the window.
