That is a lot of roster that needs filling for next season.

Not sure why you're giving Girard a pass after another abysmal playoff performance.

This is the 4th year in a row now where Samuel Girard is getting boxed out by every forward on the opposing team and losing every physical battle. At some point, you're going to have to make a decision here to either:

A) Trade him
B) Insulate him with a giant defensemen that isn't brain dead like Graves/Nemeth

But enough is enough.

Girard is the playoff defenseman version of Gaudreau and Marner. I f***ing hate to admit it but it's true..

If we can trick CBJ to make this trade, we should to it. Worry about the cap latter.

That's most likely the best deal Columbus is going to get for Jones given that he's made it public he's not signing back with them. Not many other teams will be offering a 23 yr old top pairing (regular season) defenseman locked into a great contract.

They may squeeze a tiny bit more value out of a quantity deal, but they already have a shit ton of quantity everywhere.

I hope you are right... would love for it to happen.

I mentioned throwing in Graves retained and just bringing up Helleson at this point, can't be much worse.

Girard + Graves + conditional pick based on how well Jones does or either of those 2 do.

I wouldn't use Girard to acquire Seth Jones.

I'd use Girard to acquire legitimate forward help. You've got Toews/Makar/Byram and Timmins showed some very good hockey this playoffs. If you tell Timmins to spend the offseason working hard on his skating, you've got something there. He's already willing to physically engage and he's strong, he doesn't get pushed around and he actually dishes it. We've also got Erik Johnson returning whether we like it or not at his big price tag.

But Sammy G has got to go.

He's not the only problem on this team. I'd happily move on from Kadri, Burakovsky, Donskoi, Compher, Jost, Soderberg, O'Brien, Bellemare, Graves, Nemeth, and Grubauer.

However, how often is it you see that much movement from one team in one summer?

My guess is the Avs don't re-sign Grubauer, Soderberg, Bellemare, Calvert, or Nemeth. I think one of Compher/Jost gets selected by Seattle. However, that's about all we'll see in terms of easy movement.

Why add when you don't need to? Who else is offering a piece remotely close to Girard's value?

2 years left to Mackinnon's contract.

I hope people realize that. I hope Joe Sakic realizes that. 2 Years. That is what we have left to a cup window, if we even have that.

I am not even remotely confident this team figures its shit out. This was our year and they blew it. Downhill from here.

Time for my totally rational takes before it starts to hurt to look at a bright screen:

- Games 5 and 6 broke my heart. They could have and should have won both. If they had played 5 and 6 like they played part of 2, and all of 3 and 4, I think they would need to nuke half the team, because that team was broke. In games 5 and 6 they actually played good hockey...they just kill themselves. Every year. Goddamit. This was one of, if not their best, chance at winning it. The cap crunch begins this offseason and gets worse every season from here on out for the foreseeable future.
- Time for Landeskog to take a nice big team friendly deal. Love the guy, love him in the regular season, loved what he did in the first round, but he sure dropped the ball when it was needed. If he and his camp want a max term, market-value deal...I think a tough call has to be made, as much as it sets the team back in the short term. Ultimately, I think he needs to be kept.
- Grubauer can go unless he badly wants to stay and takes a very friendly deal (he won't). There are only a handful of goalies in the league worth paying big money, and he ain't it. This team is good enough to make mediocre goalies look good. Embarrassing performance from him in the biggest game of the season.

- I never want to see Nazem Kadri in an Avs uniform again. I'll be incredibly disappointed if I have to watch him here. Was utterly useless down the stretch and then once again sees red in the playoffs and takes himself -- and another player -- out of it. Selfish, dumb hockey player. The fact that he went for another dumb hit, pointless hit in the playoffs indicates he's learned absolutely nothing. Pathetic. Good riddance.
- Shop Girard. I'm with Cousin Eddie on this. He's nothing short of brilliant in the regular season, he just turned 23, he's on a great contract that's gonna be pretty invaluable in the flat cap world. But man, he can't handle the playoffs, and the evidence is mounting, even though he's so incredibly young still. There are enough teams in the league that don't have guys who can't move the puck a fraction as well as Girard can (and who don't have serious cup aspirations) that there will be a lineup around the block if the Avs move him. Fortunately, the Avs have other guys who can move the puck, and who aren't inhibited by tiny frames. Move him if the right #2 centre comes along. Absolutely keep him unless the trade makes a ton of sense.

- Regardless of what happens with Girard, the team needs an Erik Johnson, who isn't the actual EJ, on defense. AKA, a big top four defenseman who can eat significant top four minutes, PK, and embrace a physical game (aka eat and return hits). Not a hockey dumbass like Zadorov, and not whatever Ryan Graves thinks he is. What a waste of a 6'5 body. Anyways, it's a really clear need on the back end. It sucks, because EJ, before the injuries, was that guy, and he's certainly eating up the cap hit of that guy. They have to replace what EJ was capable of bringing.
- Get an actual top end #2 centre. That has to be the #1 goal this offseason (again).
- Add some f-ing size, heart, and fight to the bottom nine group. It doesn't mean a bunch of facepunchers, it doesn't mean a bunch of guys who can't skate, and it doesn't even need to be that many. Just 1-2 high quality, hard working forecheckers can transform an entire group. They missed Calvert this playoffs. That guy cared and never quit. Hopefully Burakovsky is moved to some middling team that badly needs regular season scoring. There are many clubs like that out there.

Now, the actual scenario: Bednar is given another shot since the club did well in the regular season. Kadri is retained and allowed to walk next year, while Jost/Newhook cover the #3 centre spot yet again and one of them takes over the #2 spot in 2022. Sakic doesn't seem to think the Avs have any problems down the middle, somehow. Burakovsky, Compher, Donskoi and company are all on the team next year (maybe one of them goes to Seattle). A mediocre bottom pairing defenseman is added to join the exact same defense corps of Makar, Toews, Girard, Byram, Graves (if he's not picked) and Timmins. Maybe EJ makes a return, only to be on LTIR by the end of October.

Probably a few people, also going off of the fact that we haven't had a big named UFA join us in god knows how long I'm desperate at this point. Addition by subtraction with Graves too.

Interesting how Girard transformed the Avs D when he was acquired. But he isn’t built for physical PO hockey.

I was pleased with Timmins’ development. The PO experience will prove important for him and Newhook.

I have a hard time believing Byram and EJ were truly ready. JB doesn’t strike me as a coach that would play a player returning from injury before they’re ready even if it meant his job.

Graves has value, he's worth at least a 2nd/3rd minimum.

You're undervaluing how much Columbus would value Girard. He's a 23 yr old, top pairing (regular season) defenseman that is locked into a sweetheart contract for the next 6 years. We are talking about a team that has lost Panarin, Dubois, Duchene, and Bobrovsky, along with Jones with one foot out the door, and potentially Werenski + Laine as well.

I hope you realize that Mack was the biggest reasons we lost this series.

I’m all for going after Seth Jones, even if it’s just as a rental. You have two years to do something because of MacKinnon’s contract situation so it’s time to get bold.

However, that could be tough to do because of everything else. They need to add another legit center who either comes in as the 2C or at the very least could move up and play that role if needed.

They also need a starting goalie and depth up front.

Landeskog needs to take a discount after that performance. Him being a 3rd line grinder was supposed to be just a meme but wait that would be giving him too much credit cause he didn't even really grind.
