Can you imagine if they let Jarmo and Davidson do a second rebuild after screwing up the first one though? It's no wonder why that team struggles so much.

Yep, Columbus could have Karlsson, Johansen, Saad, Marchessault, Dubois, Anderson, and Duclair on their roster (all players playing prominent roles for playoff teams) if they had been willing to be patient. That's not to mention guys like Tyler Motte and Blake Comeau, or prospects like Vitaly Abramov, Lassi Thomson, Samuel Fagemo, Joel Blomqvist, Alex Laferriere (no, not that one), and whoever gets drafted at #37 this year. Combine that with Atkinson, Bjorkstrand, Foligno, Werenski, Gavrikov, Savard, Merzlikins, and Korpisalo and you've got the building blocks of a pretty good team. Add in a good trade (maybe you still do the Johansen-Jones deal) or two and a couple free agents and this might be a contending team.

Instead, Jarmo couldn't help himself. He constantly traded away futures to fill holes on the team, then sold the farm for a doomed playoff run because he wasn't able to think long-term and trade Panarin/Bobrovsky when he had the chance.

Of all the trades he's made before this year, only one player directly acquired (as in not a draft pick who became a player) is still with the team, and that's Jones, who is probably about to be traded. If that doesn't scream a short-term thinking GM, I don't know what does.

How long will Laine, Roslovic and Domi stick around? Jarmo is quite capable when it comes to drafting and acquiring players, but he clearly doesn't have any clue when it comes to keeping the right players (or identifying players who will want to stay in Columbus).

Here's an idea of what the team might look like today: Patient Columbus - CapFriendly - NHL Salary Caps

Jones would be great but I think we need more depth upfront. We have insane defense as it is.

Don't go full Nashville. You need offense too!

Agreed. With Landeskog, Makar, and Grubauer on expiring contracts this summer, the Avs are going to have to get creative if they plan on making any significant moves. I am concerned about their ability to replace a guy like Saad, let along finding a way to bring in Jones.

I'm coming around to the idea that the Avs should try to find a way to keep Saad if he wants to stay and will sign a reasonable deal. It might not be feasible of course, but man what a great fit he's been, and he obviously is a guy that brings it to the next level in the playoffs.

Just read through the comments regarding a Jones trade. Blue Jacket fans consider (wish for) Colorado as a trading partner for Jones. After reading the comments I'm not sure the Avs are.

One question - What is the deal with Johnson? Is he a Kucherov candidate next year? If so maybe a deal works from a cap pov, if not it doesn't imo.

Also just wanted to say that I only saw the highlights of last night's game and wow! made me realize what is possible if you can draft and keep players like your top line and Makar. Your future looks very bright. Gotta re-sign Grubauer & Landeskog but that shouldn't be a problem.

Good luck on your run to the Cup. Avs-Lightning would be a great series to watch.
Going forward the Avalanche will need cheap or rental forwards, so getting tied down to Jones long term doesn’t make sense.

Now at rental prices for him...

I can't foresee Saad wanting to leave. He'll get multiple SC if he stays with this group.

It'll be interesting to see what Saad is looking for, but I imagine it will be a place that provide him long-term security as he's starting a family now. He's already won 2 Stanley Cups in his career and he's also already made $40 mil in his career. My guess it'll be a destination that's attractive to his wife and can provide long-term security - aka a NMC/NTC clause.

He'll have to take a huge discount to stay. After signing Landy, Makar, and possibly Gru there just won't be any money left.

Yeah, I absolutely get where you're coming from but I just have this weird feeling that the guys really understand how special a team they have. I could see them wanting to stay together.

It all depends on if EJ is headed to LTIRetirement or not. That's the biggest question this off season. If he is that 6M gives us alot of playroom for Sadd and even make a run at another center like Danault.

We'd have to move money out for sure. If we somehow found a way to move Compher, Graves and Donskoi (who I also wouldn't mind keeping, but not at the expense of Saad), we could afford him - for now anyway.

Landy: $8milx7
Makar: $8milx8
Saad:$4milx4
Grub: $6milx6
Jost: $2.5x2
Timmins:$950k x2
Dong to Seattle

That leaves us with ~1mil left over and a 4th line of Ranta, Newhook, LOC. But Saad and Makar's contracts are very team friendly and that's if EJ is LTIR'd. I would love to find a way to keep everyone but some sacrifices will have to be made and chances are Saad will be the first one to go which sucks.

I’d like to keep Saad. He’s a good depth scorer and is incredible around the net.

I think he’s going to Edmonton though. They’ve got cash to spend and could use someone like him. I think they’ll overpay, if that’s what it takes to get him.

Yeah, I'm on the same train. Keep Donskoi and Saad if possible. Move Graves and Compher.

I don’t know about Graves man. He’s been unbelievable to end the season and in the playoffs so far.

I can't believe I'm writing this but we are overstocked on D. Believe me, I realize the value and utility of Graves but there is no escaping the fact that we will lose a good player to Seattle. Sakic will ensure that our cap is in good shape.

Pre expansion draft trade I made in a mock:

:avs

Tyler Benson
Kirill Maksimov

:edmonton

Ryan Graves
JT Compher
Tyler Benson can't skate at this level. Waste of a prospect, he'll be AHL bound for his career unfortunately.

Amazing, too since he was the most dominant 13/14 year old player in Alberta at that age.

I'm not quite so sure - he's already made $40 million in his career, I don't think an extra ~$5 mil or so would be enough to persuade him to move to Edmonton. I don't think he'll stay with the Avs at a discount, but he'd most likely prefer a destination in the US - I know if I was in his shoes I sure as hell wouldn't move to Edmonton.

If not the Avs, I could see Saad with the Penguins or maybe Chicago/Columbus try to convince him to come back.

I just don’t see how the Avs will have the money for him unless they move two contracts out. If they lose Graves to expansion and EJ is bought out :(
that would leave them with some flexibility, but they’ll be tight for cash. Especially if they go long term with Makar.

Both Friedman and Portzline are saying they believe Jones is getting traded. CBJ isn't going to mess around this time and try to compete with him or change his mind. Could be a trade and extend type of deal with a team he wants to play for rather than a rental move.

Watch him end up playing for a team in our division next season.
