I don't think so. I think you can see there was sort of a plan on D to let the dmen play their optimal side but it kind of involved Erik Johnson being able to fill a top 4 role. When they traded for Toews and signed Graves I think the district plan was.

Toews-Makar
Girard-Johnson
Graves-Timmins

When Johnson went down Byram had to brought in maybe earlier than they were expecting and Girard ended up playing on the right. With Nemeth being LHD it would not be optimal even with losing Graves in ED we still have Toews, Girard and Byram on the left side and if Erik Johnson can come back it's pretty balanced at that point with Makar, Johnson and Timmins. Not that it essential that the dmen play on their shot side but bednar has mentioned it matters to some degree, so if they sign another D it would probably not be Nemeth. Just my opinion.

I hope you're right. Some guys we might look at are Savard, Larsson, Hamonic, Tucker Poolman, or Hakanpaa. Righties who can kill penalties, basically.

Debunked.

Sounds like Montreal never offered that, but sounds like that's what Danault is looking for.

I would love Hakanpaa, pretty sure he'll get re-signed by Carolina though.

Stastny will be 36-37 in 2022-23. How long do you think he'll be able to carry on playing at a 3C level for a contender?

I don't know but I feel like Staz is a guy who might still be effective in a 3C role as he gets closer to 40.

A couple seasons ago he scored at a 69 point pace. Last year he scored at a 20 goal 44 point pace, then had 9 points in 18 playoff games. This year he had a similar season scoring at a 42 point pace, and has 2 points in 4 playoff games so far.

I just think he could be a real effective 3C for the Avs. Similar to Jost but with more production. Not that I want to get rid of Jost, but I think they may part ways at some point.

Friedman just said Seth Jones informed Columbus he won't be re-signing (at least not right now) and intends to test free agency next summer.

This is what I've been talking about. Jarmo sunk that franchise keeping Torts as long as they did.

Only left Jones one year to find something positive about Columbus to want to stay. That's not enough.

They’re the Arizona of the East. Two franchises that would be better off leaving their locations.

Exactly. Two overrated defensive teams without enough talent to compete.

And Jarmo gambled on Torts being the guy to turn things around, and risked losing their best defenseman. Which looks like it might happen now and will leave them with even less talent.

Compare the teams on-ice product if you want but I’ve no idea why you want the Jackets to move. They have a fantastic arena deal, it appears to be in a good location (unlike Arizona), and they’ve had a dedicated fanbase since the beginning.

Avs win Cup. Then trade EJ somewhere to buy him out, so he can sign a one year deal somewhere else. Then sign both Jones and EJ next summer.

Byram - Makar
Toews - Jones
Girard - EJ

No need to play the games, just hand the Avs the Cup.

We can actually afford Seth Jones if we somehow get rid of EJ's contract...

EJ surprise retires, joins the team in some sort of management or horse-related role. Avs load up and get Jones with whatever future assets it takes.

If they did get Jones, I'd rather they pursue him in UFA. They don't really need him, and I don't like the price it's gonna cost to trade for him.

Probably have to give up Byram or Girard, and the Avs will need their cheap contracts for a while.

It sucks for Columbus because they actually embraced the team and they built a pretty interesting culture there. It really felt that they were putting together some pieces that would have made them a modern Devils team with a focus on two-way talent and a strong defensive core. The last couple of years things have really fallen apart.

Can you imagine if they let Jarmo and Davidson do a second rebuild after screwing up the first one though? It's no wonder why that team struggles so much.

What rebuild? Jarmo was NEVER given a chance at a rebuild. He had the clean up the mess made by not one, but two uproariously bad general managers. This would be the first teardown of the Davidson/Kelalainen era.

Biggest loser in the CBJ situation is Patrik Laine

Dude cried and moaned for years because he couldn't play with the best center in Winnipeg. Now what? There's not even a 2C in Columbus, let alone a 1C, and they'll be forced to rebuild.

They have to trade him too! What a mess.

Jarmo built pretty much the whole team they have now through the draft and trade.

I think Atkinson is the only player still on the team from when he took over. That's essentially a rebuild and most GM's don't get to do it twice.

He’s only gotten to pick in the top ten twice, and in those drafts he got Werenski and Dubois. There’s never really been a period where they truly tanked it except for Tortorella’s first season and his last. He deserves a lot of credit for essentially rebuilding on the fly during a period when they were trying to at least be competitive but, they really need to get that gamebreaking superstar, something that they’ve really never had in Lumbus.

Did they really screw up the first one, though? They managed to get a team to the 2nd round of the playoffs and then had the unfortunate circumstance of being a team in Columbus, Ohio competing with New York City for the rights to Artemi Panarin.

They've been a very good team during the entire Torts run save for this past season. I don't know if we can call this "screwing up."

I should correct myself there—the Jackets HAVE had a gamebreaking superstar (Panarin) but were obviously unable to hold onto him through no fault of their own.

They really gotta draft that guy and start this thing from the ground up.
