Avs win Cup. Then trade EJ somewhere to buy him out, so he can sign a one year deal somewhere else. Then sign both Jones and EJ next summer.

Byram - Makar
Toews - Jones
Girard - EJ

No need to play the games, just hand the Avs the Cup.
EJ goes on LTIR until the playoffs.

Oh who am I kidding? The league would never allow that cap circumvention!:sarcasm:

For Jones (with contract 8 ×7.5)
I proposed

Girard+Kadri+ Barron or Helleson

Look our
defence for the next few years

Toews-Makar
Byram-Jones
Graves - Timmins

Isn’t Girard as good if not better than Jones? Seems strange to trade Girard (with others) for an equal or lesser player

Did you just propose a trade where you not only included Sam Girard for Jones, but you added to him?
I probably overestimated Jones. I included Girard because the day Byram is ready we will have a top 2 defender on the left and on the right we will most likely have a hole. Moreover for the playoffs I doubt that Girard is as good as in season. Rich problem. We could also strengthen our top 6 on offense with one of our defenders.

There's no room for Jones on this team. I don't care if he's better than some of our dmen, he's going to cost too much in assets and then too much in cap space.

Also I'm not sure I like his attitude and he just had a terrible season.

No reason to enter a bidding war for him with the defense we have and Byram coming up, he's going to end up in Boston or something.

If we do have some money available try to re-sign Saad for cheap...(but now that EJ is skating we probably won't have money anyway).

Would love Jones, but we don’t need him unless he wanted to come here at an insane discount (~$7 mil AAV) as a UFA. That would be an absolutely filthy defense though, and probably one of the best defense in league ever.

I don’t see the core of this defence changing for a few years.

I expect some kind of variation of this moving forward:

Toews - Makar
Byram - Girard
Timmins

The top-4 will be mixed around, but those are the guys on D they’ll be building around for a while.
Yep. I think they keep Timmins too. Him being cheap and one of the very few RHD in the org help his case quite a bit.

Will be interesting to see what happens with Barron and Helleson in the next couple of years.

Did they really screw up the first one, though? They managed to get a team to the 2nd round of the playoffs and then had the unfortunate circumstance of being a team in Columbus, Ohio competing with New York City for the rights to Artemi Panarin.

They've been a very good team during the entire Torts run save for this past season. I don't know if we can call this "screwing up."

Columbus has been overrated for a long time IMO. They just got hot and caught lightning in a bottle that season they beat the Lighnting, but the 2nd round is the furthest they've ever gone in the playoffs, and they've only done it once.

Every year under Jarmo outside that lighting in a bottle season, they've either missed the playoffs or lost in the first round. And they usually have to sneak into the playoffs as a wild card team. If not for the shortened season last year, they might have missed the playoffs two years in a row now.

That simply is not a good track record and therefore not a good team.

He’s only gotten to pick in the top ten twice, and in those drafts he got Werenski and Dubois. There’s never really been a period where they truly tanked it except for Tortorella’s first season and his last. He deserves a lot of credit for essentially rebuilding on the fly during a period when they were trying to at least be competitive but, they really need to get that gamebreaking superstar, something that they’ve really never had in Lumbus.

Like you mentioned, they had Panarin. But they couldn't keep him. They have Jones who's a game breaking talent on the blueline, but again it looks like they won't be able to keep him.

Also like you said, he's had two top 10 picks. But despite being a great scout, he didn't do as well as he could have in the draft.

Werenski is a good player, but with Jarmo's Finish connections, he could have picked Mikko instead who was still on board. He could have picked a more talented offensive player in Matt Tkachuk but went with PLD instead. He picked Sonny Milano instead of Alex Tuch who went two picks later. He picked Kirby Reichel when Burakovsky went four picks later.

These are all dropped balls for a team that despreately needed talented players. He could have had some game breakers like you say they're missing but he didn't do it.

Jarmo also traded away a couple first round picks trying to load up with a team that wasn't good enough to win IMO. So that's on him just like it was on Sherman for trading away the Avs 1st round picks when they weren't good enough to win.

The Size Queen Chief wants your overly large caliber gun and badge.

At this stage we might as well trade Helleson before he enters his senior year.
From his pov it honestly makes zero sense to sign with the avs having Girard, byram, timmins, barron, toews and Makar all locked up long-term.

Just read through the comments regarding a Jones trade. Blue Jacket fans consider (wish for) Colorado as a trading partner for Jones. After reading the comments I'm not sure the Avs are.

One question - What is the deal with Johnson? Is he a Kucherov candidate next year? If so maybe a deal works from a cap pov, if not it doesn't imo.

Also just wanted to say that I only saw the highlights of last night's game and wow! made me realize what is possible if you can draft and keep players like your top line and Makar. Your future looks very bright. Gotta re-sign Grubauer & Landeskog but that shouldn't be a problem.

Good luck on your run to the Cup. Avs-Lightning would be a great series to watch.
