Personally, I think having that really elite piece is more valuable than having the great player on a great contract.

For what it’s worth, I feel pretty confident Girard will be a 45+ point guy moving forward. I’m a believer in his talent.
I mean Girard is trending towards being an elite player. But like I said next year will be the year that really shows that to me.

I never sugested an especific trade. It could be for a youngish center on a similar contract (or not so young), or a more expensive player while attaching a bad contract to Girard.

If teams around the league see Girard the same way Hench does, Sakic would be stupid not to explore all the possibilities.
But why? That just sounds like trading to trade. Sakic very clearly has a team makeup in mind and trading Girard who's on sweetheart deal through his peak and prime who fits the team identity to a tee just doesn't make sense to me. If a dman is going to be traded or not brought back it will be Toews as he's going to age and price himself out the quickest.

Right now we have a well rounded team that has no pressing need to make a big trade, but after next season we could lose Bura and Kadri, and like i said, we don't have a whole lot on the pipeline when it comes to blue chip forward prospects.

So, who knows what our needs are going to be a year from now? Sure it could be Toews traded and not Girard, it could be Byram too. I just don't get why people get all up in arms with the mere sugestion that Girard (position of strengh) could be moved eventually to adress a more pressing need.

Because of the contract value. That's it. You aren't going to get a better bang for your buck player than him. That would've been the equivalent of the Preds trading Josi when he was on his $4mil contract back in the day instead of Weber or Subban.

The Josi contract is pretty much a direct comparable here. Both were ~6% of the cap. Both signed before a full breakout (if G continues). G's pacing this year was 55 points over 82 games with high end defense and transition play. Josi took another year to reach that level of production, but has held that basically since he reached it. G has better underlying numbers and produced the same as Josi this year. G's value is basically Josi circa 2015/2016.

And there were probably 2 maybe players in the whole league Nashville would've traded Josi for at that point.

No question Girard >> Barrie, but he's being a tad overrated here.
Is he? He’s the best transition dman in the league, paced for 55pts this season, and is really solid defensively. If he keeps the point totals up throughout his career he’s probably a top ~15 dman every season. If he goes back down to ~35 he’s a top ~30 dman.

I love Girard but he isn't a #1 yet, and i can't see him reaching that level here with Makar around. Now, thanks to his contract we don't need to trade him any time soon.

At the same time, because of his great contract, Girard could bring a much better return than Toews. So, depending on the situation, he could be the one traded. Plus, Byram could probably replace Girard (in a year or two) while also having a relatively small cap hit.

Rantanen 7th in the Hart trophy category. I knew you would come around.

You can have multiple 1D level players on 1 team?

You must not have been around when the Avs were struggling with finding competent D-men to acquire for whom the cost wasn't outrageous.

I was around during the dark years, casual fan since they came here when I was a kid and a more dedicated fan since 2012. Not sure my post was that controversial, I wasn't advocating getting rid of him I just think Rantanen is more valuable to this team given how our team is constructed. I also said you could make the case he is a top 10 defender but he just isn't on my current top 10 list in the NHL. What part of that makes you think I don't value him on this team?

Henchman has gotten all his followers talking crazy:laugh:
Girard is not 1D.
He is not playing 1D minutes, he doesn't PK, he plays in the 2nd PP leftover seconds, he's shot is a muffin etc.
And I love G but he is not 1D.
Period.
