First of all Girard is not a top10 defenseman in the league. That's just absurd thing to say.
But like you said it yourself Girard is a luxury piece to have. Specially likes of Byram and Barron pushing in to the line up. Rantanen on the other hand is not a luxury piece, he's a necessity if we want to really contend now and going forward.

G was a top 10 defensemen this season in the quality of his play. He was absurdly good. Him keeping up that level is a question that won't be answered until next year.

His value on the open market is 8+ and if this level of play holds, might be 9-9.5+... this is a MacKinnon level value contract that can help keep cap issues at bay. I don't think Byram will get to the level of G, but he's going to be good. Barron won't approach G's level.

I don't think it's insane, it depends on what metrics you use and what skill sets you value. I would say the overall effectiveness of Girard is undeniable, his fit on this team is great and he certainly has an argument for top 10 defender. On the other hand I can also probably name 10 or more I would rather have than him because of their all around game and skill sets, one of them is on our team already.

I take Rants over Girard for our team, but from a pure value perspective i'd take Girard.

If we didn't have ridiculous depth on defense Girard is the easy choice, but we don't really have a player that can replace Rants, especially in the playoffs. I know i've been pretty critical of Rants in the past, but he's been pretty consistent since February and has helped generate momentum and chances this playoffs, as opposed to the past (outside of scoring clutch goals).

Yes. The Avs should move their 2nd best value contract and a top 5 contract in the league when they will inevitably be in a cap crunch. Makes perfect sense.

Defensemen are simply more important than wingers. G showed legit #1D ability this year and was a top 10 defensmen in the league. It will be interesting to see if that holds, but if it does, he's a top 10 most valuable piece in the NHL. A just turned 23 year old #1D signed for 6 more years at $5m is just an absurd luxury to have. Even if the offense regresses and he's more of a #2... that is still far more valuable than any wing. I wouldn't even trade G straight up for Kucherov.

I don't think that's true at all. It's an exaggeration at best. There's no evidence whatsoever that Kucherov could make it work with a Tyson Jost-type center. And Jost has had his fair pick of elite linemates over the years and it didn't work with them previously either.
