Finally a voice of reason!
It's insane how this Avalanche board works. Henchman says something out of his a** like white is black, earth is flat, Girard is better than Rants etc and all the Pierce Hawthorns & other mice run here immediately "I agree, I AGREE!"
This Avs board would be the best place to do some kind of mass psychology study:laugh::laugh::laugh:

I like Hench and pretty much everyone on this board actually.

There’s nothing wrong with agreeing, or disagreeing with other people on here. It’s just hockey discussion.

Even with the value his contract adds, putting Girard as a top-10 NHL asset is too high.

I get the contract situation with Girard, but he’s not a more valuable player to this team than Rantanen. Rants was damn near MacKinnon level this year.

I’d trade Girard for Kucherov in a heartbeat. You could run Jost at 2C long term with Nikita Kucherov on his wing.

I said if G holds that level of play next year. At that point he's a legit #1D and arguably top 10 at his position league wide for $5m per. That would arguably be the single best contract in the NHL. There is the if he holds it up.

Kucherov would murder Jost 5 minutes into the game. People think MacK gets on his teammates, Kuch is about 50x worse. I love Kuch and I think he's a legit top 10 player, maybe top 5 player of any position in the NHL. He's a wing, and wings are just not a piece to build around. To win Cups, you need centers and defense... then support around them. A wing like Rants is fantastic to have, but they are not critical to building a Cup team.

I don't think that's true at all. It's an exaggeration at best. There's no evidence whatsoever that Kucherov could make it work with a Tyson Jost-type center. And Jost has had his fair pick of elite linemates over the years and it didn't work with them previously either.

Kucherov is one of the best players in the entire NHL. Guys like him and Panarin can carry a line by themselves. Mark Stone does a similar thing in Vegas too.

I like them too. I only talked about their behavior as a small tight internet click.

I fully acknowledge that he is but you have no evidence that he can just "carry a line" by himself. He has had talented linemates around him since Day One.

And I'll repeat--if one of the best players in the entire NHL can make it work long-term with Tyson Jost, then Jost and MacKinnon together should have worked. It didn't.

Fair enough haha. Where do you have Girard ranked on your top ten list?
Including contracts which I'd put him above Barkov, Fox, Hughes, Laf, and Barzal. If he plays like this again next season I would put him ahead of Aho, Point, and Marner probably. Getting a 1D at 5mil is just such a stupid bargain.

I actually already have Girard as a #1 caliber D, but I think from our previous discussions I’m a little more lenient on the requirements for that.

There’s still several players that are on a completely different level than G in the NHL though, which is why I wouldn’t have him in my top-10. Top-20 asset I could consider, but I’d really like to see regular season Girard emerge in the playoffs.

If I’m looking at building blocks for my team I’ll stomach a little extra salary to get the better piece.

I don’t know how you could take G over guys like Barkov, Fox, Point, and Aho. They’re just better, more valuable players and have plenty of prime years left in the NHL.

I'm saying from a value perspective. Fox is better but he won't be ~$4mil better. Barkov after this season will be making $10mil+ most likely. Having a 1D at $5mil is an absolutely absurd thing and makes building out the rest of your team so much easier. In a vacuum some of those guys are better but as an asset Girard is the dman with he best contract in the league right now and it's not really close. Excluding Miro, Fox, and Makar because their contracts end this offseason and will get paid handsomely.

If Girard regresses back to how he was the season prior and is closer to 2D level than he won't be above those guys. But if he can be a 45-50pt dman and bring everything else he does I don't see why he wouldn't be a top 10 asset in the league.

Right now… yeah top 20. If he plays like he did this season, he’ll move up to top 10. That’s what I’m saying. If G can show it in these playoffs, he may move up sooner.

Personally, I think having that really elite piece is more valuable than having the great player on a great contract.

For what it’s worth, I feel pretty confident Girard will be a 45+ point guy moving forward. I’m a believer in his talent.

Honestly I haven't put a ton of thought into it, I'm mostly just trolling you.

That said I don't think it's out of bounds to say he's a top ten asset. There are very, very few defenders who can do everything he does, and at the level he does. If he had a harder shot or laid big hits he'd be the Norris frontrunner right now.

I mean he should be kept through the duration of the contention window 100%. Trading contracts that are your best value for money make no sense. Especially when Girard is such a big part of what makes this team special.

I never sugested an especific trade. It could be for a youngish center on a similar contract (or not so young), or a more expensive player while attaching a bad contract to Girard.

If teams around the league see Girard the same way Hench does, Sakic would be stupid not to explore all the possibilities.
