Scenarios like this are why "he's just a 7th defenseman"and "he's just a bottom pair defenseman" ring hollow.
Soooo what’s your suggestion? In a cap world. Are they supposed to have 8 Provorovs in the system? Tampa won a Cup last year with Luke friggin Schenn, past-his-prime Shattenkirk, and the corpse of Braydon Coburn logging time on defense in playoff/Cup final games. I don’t know what alternate reality you live in where the bottom pair/depth/7th Dmen are supposed to be studs.

edit: And before you say “get better players”, this team is hamstrung cap-wise by the likes of the JVR and Voracek contracts, so there is limited space. Not to mention the numerous young guys that are due for upcoming extensions, as well as the upcoming Couturier extension, all in a flat cap world for the next 2-3 seasons.

Best case news for Myers I guess.

Morgan is most likely done for the year, that's not a good injury

The f***ed up thing about Frost's injury is that it was a result of trying to avoid contact. This is why preseason is important. These guys need to ease back into the physicality of the NHL.

f*** off Bettman.

Anyone have a timetable on a return for him? Indefinitely is never a good word.

It's not about having 6 provorovs. It's about having 7 NHL defensemen with a modern game skillset. Hagg is a total liability due to his skillset, not because of his "overall quality"

See this is why people who say that Morgan Frost is a too-small lil guy who should be AHL man are TOTALLY RIGHT here he takes a hit with his boy body and bang separated shoulder out forever then you look big man Phil Myers definitely NHL size takes hit breaks a rib like a man he'll be back next week p***ies separate things real men crack ribs and are fine sarcasm emoji

It was definitely a glancing blow and about the worst possible outcome for the actual contact that occured.

Kid finally gets a legit f***ing chance and this happens.

I hate this sport sooooo much.

Hard to say without knowing more about the injury. But, probably a minimum of 3 months.

This is a problem for most teams most years, made worse this year by COVID.
Even in a healthy season, you're going to have stretches where you play your 13th/14th forwards and 7th/8th defensemen.

But the supply of cheap depth players is limited, and teams that have them don't given them away when they're one sneeze from playing players like Prosser.

We're deeper than we've been in a long time, and if the AHL was up and running, we'd have some forwards and D-men with some game experience to bring up. But right now is not the time to play a prospect who's a year away and hasn't even been practicing on a regular basis, so you go with players with some NHL experience on the taxi squad. And patch your way through a few weeks.

Hedman, McDonagh, Sergachev, Cernak, Shattenkirk, Bogosian all had at least 20 playoff appearances last season. That group shits all over whatever pairings the Flyers could assemble.

They’re being told that? You’re in the locker room and in team meetings? Interesting, didn’t know we had a member of the organization here on the boards. Anyway, let’s assume, for the sake of this discussion, that you’re right, and they are being told that. Want to take a guess as to why? Which forwards have shown the ability to successfully gain the offense zone with speed and full control of the puck and do so on a consistent basis? Hayes? Probably the best example with the way he used his body to shield the puck, but he’s not blowing anyone away with speed. Voracek? Has the ability, doesn’t do it nearly enough. Giroux? Yeah, maybe prime Giroux, but the not current version. JVR? Lol. The closest thing is probably Konecny, and sometimes his hands are too fast for his brain and he is erratic with the puck on his stick (Islanders really took advantage of this in the playoffs). This team is coached as best as they can to their strengths. They do have some straight line speed up front, which would be my guess as to why they dump and chase, as they maybe figure they can win foot races to pucks in the corners/behind the net. But once they’re met there by the opposing Dmen, it’s usually 1-2 quick passes and an easy breakout for the opposition. Carry the puck in with this group, they’re often knocked off the puck on the half wall and it’s going the other way.
Excellent post. I agree.

The Islanders punished the Flyers’ D with forechecking in the playoffs. The Islanders were either winning the puck battles on the wall, or making the Flyers’ D panic into turnovers or icings. It was brutal. This continues to be a problem with the defense corps.

Shattenkirk is still good. He can be not what he was and also still an excellent use of a roster spot, much like Niskanen last year.

Why are we focusing on Tampa’s depth Defensemen? They have arguably the best Defenseman in the world, one of the premier scorers on the planet, 3 at or near Couturier level ES Forwards, and high quality players up and down the lineup. All Tampa says is that if you have everything else under the sun, one of Bogosian/Schenn/Rutta/Coburn can be carried. The Flyers don’t have those strengths or if they do, not to nearly the same degree.

Depth is insanely important and almost impossible in the cap era.
Patrick last year, frost this year.
Amazing they can still role 3 top 6 centers. G, Hayes and np.
