DIdn't read the article yet but dear god no on Matheson and Tanev is a righty and I think TO will go after him HARD

Edmundson and Dillon make the most sense on this team to be the Scuderi/Mitchell like veteran on a young blueline.

Agree with you guys on Tanev and Matheson being hard passes, and my guess is Clague likely doesn’t see 40 games.

If they add a veteran dman, and with Anderson and Bjornfot also competing for roster spots (plus Kurtis MacDermid), it’s going to be a tight squeeze to get Clague into that many games.

My only issue with Edmondson is that he is a bottom pairing Dman that plays quite a bit less than guys like Willie Mitchell ever played. Even Scuderi was a consistently 20+ mpg guy for us. I dont have much of an opinion on Edmondson as I've never really paid attention to him. But it makes me nervous paying millions in aav for multiple years to a guy that we might not want in our lineup in the near future.

It’s a good year to sign him to a short contract with a fair AAV. The flat cap means he’s not going to have many suitors. Like all UFA signings it’s about getting the price and especially the term correct.

I just don't see this team at the point where we should be looking for low impact depth players, to fill holes. Now if the plan is to go for it then sure. But at this stage it should be about development and adding high impact players with our cap space that will play key roles going forward.

If it's between say Edmondson on the third pairing or Mikey Anderson for example. I'd rather give Anderson those 18+ minutes a night for development purposes. And to see what we have so we are better positioned to identify holes when we do decide to fill them.

Maatta is the only top-4 D Lisa had in her list.

Dillon and Edmundson are bottom pair guys. Minor upgrade over MacDermid.

Edmundson is really slow to my eye. Good on D from a skill perspective but easily beatable by modern speedster wingers.

If these are our options, Hutton would remain relevant.

Joel Edmundson is actually perfect for us , for the bottom pairing . He will give us a deeper defensive corps.

I’m tired of seeing everyone post this prospect of ours won’t see the NHL for 2-3 years , he won’t have an impact for X amount of years . Clague will not be this or that etc etc .

Look around the NHL !!! Girard, Rasmus Anderson, Suzuki, Point , Nutivarra , Cirelli, Dunn, Dillon Dube , Garland , Robert Thomas , Chytil , Konecny , Farabee and on and on and on . Who said they were ready ? They were given the opportunity and made it .

Luckily for us Blake and co seem to notice this hence why we saw Bjornfot , Vilardi , JAD and others given a chance .

I’d bet money that by next year and the following year we will see many of our prospects on this team . Kaliyev , Turcotte , Fagemo will make the team quicker than they would have in the past . Clague if given the opportunity maybe performs better in the NHL .

Bjornfot-Doughty
Anderson-Roy
Edmundson-Clague
Walker

I’m also high on Moverare and think he will be a stay at home dman on the bottom pairing like a Scuderi but better . The kids will play good if given the opportunity it’s a young mans game now .

From things I've read and heard, the FO is very high on Clague (as well as Anderson and TB of course), so it might be difficult to just intentionally hide him it the minors for half the season to keep him from Seattle's draft list. Especially if he excels at the start of the season. Once you cross that 40 game threshold, you've got to protect him. I think it's more likely Hutton gets a 2 year deal and plays the effective vet role AND expansion draft eligible defenseman.

I don't expect all three of Clague, Bjornfot, and Anderson to make the team and stick. We would need to sign someone in that case.

I'd be fine with Edmondson on a 2 year deal. He's played 68 games this year so he should easily make the games played requirement for the expansion draft.

Clague is unlike most of the players you randomly listed. If you’ve watched his performance in preseason games, you’ll notice how physically outmatched he’s looked. I’ve seen him get destroyed by hits when playing against the Ducks, and he just hasn’t looked strong enough defensively.

Offensively he has done well though, but I question if he can stand the rigors of an NHL schedule if he’s constantly getting beat up and taking licks when he goes in to the corners against NHL forwards. He’s been too easy of a target.

Hence the trepidation in penciling him into any lineup. Let him earn that spot. And people suggesting Clague not be ready are being realistic and cautious, unlike someone who posts a fantasy lineup full of prospects.

In case you missed some of his preseason performance, I’ll post the highlights I can find. You’ll see how outmatched he looks on the four goals against in this one.

Maybe, but that game was 2 years ago and in the preseason, not exactly fair to Clague.

That’s just one example of video evidence I can find. He had similar struggles in the most recent preseason as well and was a team worst -5 in three games. Look, I’d love it if Clague is the next Sam Girard, but he’s got long ways to go before he’s considered an NHL defenseman. That’s not being pessimistic or down on him, it’s reality.

And I was all for Bjornfot and Mikey Anderson being in the lineup because they didn’t look out of place at this level. This is not writing off Clague’s chances, but he’s far from a guarantee to be a regular.

I don't disagree with your analysis, but the FO is featuring Clague so it's obvious they're going to give him every chance to make it. If you read Hoven, it's pretty clear that JAD and Clague are two players they're pushing forward. He's typically well connected with that type of news. Also, at the draft party, pictures of Clague and JAD were prominent. It was Clague that was supposed to be the first call-up before Mikey Anderson, but got injured. Who knows, maybe he goes the LaDue route and never turns out at the NHL level. But I wouldn't be shocked if early on he gets favorable partners over more highly regarded (in our eyes) rookie defensemen.

Hutton was a health scratch and not a good match for Doughty. Kings needs match for DD - even Futa said this on his recent interview on Mayors Manor.

Also, I like Edmundson too but why would he leave to play for a rebuilding team unless the Kings throw tons of money his way? He just played for Carolina and St. Louis - both top teams.

He gets the Scuderi treatment and gets at least four years of security on a team that looks to be in the playoff mix by the second year of his deal. Not saying he'd be a good match for Doughty but that could also be part of the pitch: you get the chance to play with Doughty.

Scuderi was exactly who came to my mind re: leaving a top team to play for a rebuilding team.

Bjornfot?

Your getting the 40 games rule wrong, claugue will be exposed unless he is protected regardless of the number of games he plays.

This was from the Vegas expansion and the rules do not change for Seattle's draft. Maybe I am interpreting it incorrectly, but it would seem Clague currently would not be eligible per the requirements... Or is it at least one defenseman of the group exposed has to meet the requirements below..:dunno:

* All Clubs must meet the following minimum requirements regarding players exposed for selection in the Expansion Draft: i) One defenseman who is a) under contract in 2017-18 and b) played in 40 or more NHL games the prior season OR played in 70 or more NHL games in the prior two seasons.

Sparky is correct. That means only one defensemen from the Kings has to meet the 40 or 70 game rule, not all of them. Clague is a 3rd year pro, unless the Kings protect him he can be claimed in the expansion draft. I suspect if they are not confident in his progress, they will attempt to trade him this season prior to the deadline. If he makes good progress, Kings will have to make a decision on who is expendable.
