Bingo. If you run the hard numbers, a la carte numbers just never get there without all the non-sports fans subsidizing these sports channels.
Problem is Fox Sports has been dumped by almost everyone. They may need to go the CW route and make their app open to everyone, either with a fee or without and rely on ad revenue. Advertisers are going to want to pay less if they have no viewers. By cutting Hulu, ESPN, and the rest they lost a lot of us viewers.
The only way I can see FSW is if I get Cox highest package ( without premium). I have to get everything. It is not cheap. I am sure a lot of people are just not watching.

Ya same here. I have YouTubeTV and when they dropped it last year, planned on switching to Hulu (who had FSW at the time) when the season started. But looks like every streaming service no longer has FSW, and not going to switch back to cable. So streams it is, at least they're easy to find. But would much rather FSW have a pay option to stream direct from them, but oh well.

FSW is soon to be rebranded into Rally sports.

IMO, the problem is that it is expensive to produce a live broadcast of a sports game. Today, the TV company pays for that. Outside of the announcers and some tv talent, the Kings don’t foot the bill and neither do any other teams in any league or level.

So being able to use your equipment for pro, college, HS games across multiple sports is a decent business model. If the team has to foot that bill, then the cost of the entertainment goes up quite a bit for the fans. The only way it is feasible is if the league puts in the infrastructure.

But there are too many built in challenges to seeing that happen. Too many regional tv contracts, plus the national rights. Baseball had their own streaming broadcast service, but it was unprofitable. They ended up selling it to Disney who uses it to power their D+ app.

Bottom line for us sports fans of the major pro and college sports is that you’re basically over a barrel if you are willing to pay. People will use illegal streams, but the people willing to do that are also typically an unprofitable customer if they were paying, so the rights owners don’t care about capturing them. And with advances in tech and regulations, the ability to get a pirate stream will go the way of stealing cable sooner than later.

My guess is that at some point in the near future you’ll be able to buy a streaming subscription for a league and local teams through Amazon Prime Video. They’re already doing nfl games and they are probably in the best position to replace the tv broadcasters at producing the live game stream for the sports leagues at the events.

Never fails to astound me how far behind the leagues are on streaming as a business opportunity. What a bunch of dinosaurs. I had no idea it was THAT bad. You shouldn't have to be a network administrator to sort out watching games. You would think if there were a year when they'd REALLY want to hammer out the details it would be this one, but alas..

That’s exactly what I thought. “Surely they’ll figure out their streaming service during the ONE YEAR absolutely every fan needs to watch from home.” But nope. I could deal with the occasional buffering, but going from upscaled 1080p back down to 720p is horrendous. May as well be watching an antenna feed on an old CRT panel.

In their defense, the actual NHL.tv app works fine on Xbox, Roku, Apple TV, etc. But if you’re streaming on an actual PC, you’re screwed. Why you can’t just download the same damn app for Windows 10 PC is mind blowing.

Not so simple. If you’re on a regular Windows 10 PC, you’re forced to stream NHL.tv through a browser in 720p. The app is literally not available on Windows 10. It’s all browser based flash streaming. Like what year is it lol.

You could install a VPN in your router and watch the app through another device, but that’s a huge pain in the ass and not possible on a lot of routers.

I just watched last nights game and the res wasn't that bad. It had its moments but it wasn't bad.

Thought about it but I don’t know the legality of that and I don’t like breaking the law. except speeding. I do enjoy going above and beyond the speed limit
it's not illegal, it's just against nhl.tv's terms of service. in theory they could terminate your account but i think they have better things to do

your call still, i just view it as like, is it kosher to term your account because you live in LA but happened to travel to texas and watch a game? not in my book

NHL.TV is an absolute joke. I got stuck with it after subscribing to the playoffs one year then they auto renewed me without my knowledge and I didnt find out about it until February. Its still miles behind even the old NHL Gamecentre, you can't lock in your resolution, the website is still unbelievably clunky, if your watching on replay you can't hide the progress bar so you know if its a 3-2 game late into the third and the bar is nearly finished that theres no comeback. Its a massive issue in the playoffs, you start the game and straight away see a 4 hr bar so whats the point in even watching the first 3 periods when you know it goes to overtime and the winners scored late in the first OT.

I had my unwanted subscription and still watched via other means. I can lock in max resolution, it never buffers or stutters, I can watch on delay and fast forward through the add breaks and catch up to live, theres no progress bar, I can press one button to skip an add break and another button to skip an intermission. Its ridiculous that one guy can write an app that is so far ahead of what a multi billion dollar company can offer. NHL.TV just dont give a F... , their forums tell them exactly whats wrong with the service and they just provide a public relations response and offer nothing. Like seriously how hard can it be to make the progress bar on every replay default to a 4 hr size or even be hidden, they've had 4 years of requests for it but they just don't care about the customers experience.

christ i had entirely forgotten about that app, i was watching online streams. i only remembered when you said "one guy"

thanks dude

We have two ways in Canada that I know. One is the NHL Center Ice package bought through our local TV service provides such as SaskTel Bell Express Vu, Shaw etc. it provides every NHL game other than the odd one that is blocked out in Edmonton Calgary or Vancouver. Usually those can be found on a local TSN channel. It’s high definition but they want to hundred dollars a year for the subscription.

My buddy has an Amazon Firestick. He downloaded a program called SportzTV and pays $10.99 US a month for their services. He said he gets to watch every hockey, baseball and football game through it. He said he also gets 6000 channels through the package but states the downfall is he can’t record anything.

The only thing I wonder is the legality of that application. On one hand it seems like a streaming service, but you were paying subscription fees. I’m not sure if any others have looked into it or if it’s legal. I’m also not sure how high of quality it is as I’ve never saw a game on it.

I will try and do some research later today. It’s my kids birthday party so I’ll be tied up for a bit

Losing him messes up with our taxi squad situation, but obviously doesn't really matter in the scheme of things.

I wonder if we're going to see a lot guys like Grosenick waived and claimed multiple times due to the taxi squad requirements.

it's possible as guys shift around.

But how mismanaged do you have to be to pick up Grosenick on waivers because you lost your other waiver claim on waivers?
