It’s really unfortunate NHL.tv on PC is such trash. Constantly stutters/buffers. Doesn’t display a pixel better than 720p.

I have a really high end gaming PC hooked up to a 65 inch OLED. Would love to stream all the games in the world. Would gladly pay for it. Unfortunately NHL.tv is a bush league service that requires you to stream through your f***ing browser on a PC. What a joke.

I use NHL.tv through Apple TV. Last night it was flawless, but I never have 100% confidence in it.

I was debating getting it, FSW/FSPT are usually blacked out in Vegas, but last night the Kings game wasn't (obviously the Ducks were), so I guess I don't need it.

But I've never had any problems.

Oddly comforting that it wasn't just me. Normally I'd watch in my living room, but I couldn't avoid the temptation of tossing on the 4pm games to finish off the work day. At least for my feed, it seemed to hiccup when the broadcast went to commercial. My AppleTV crapped out a few months ago and I got a replacement Chromecast to stream in the living room. Didn't have any particular issues other than needing to get used to the controls.

it's seriously pathetic. i'd pay a hell of a lot of money for a season pass of reliable 4k streaming but i'm not gonna jump through hoops for it

they're driving more people than ever to illegally stream the games at a time when they're hemorrhaging money..

The picture quality is better on the Fox Sports Go app through my 4k Fire Stick than a normal broadcast through DISH which is nice considering that's how I'll be watching this season. Rough part is that they run their own commercials on there v. the normal broadcast. Feels like four commercials total so I'm worn out already.

Inexplicably, you can’t download the actual NHL.tv app on a Windows 10 PC. It’s all browser based.

I’m sure this is a conscious decision to try and prevent people from easily using Windows based VPNs to get around archaic blackout laws. If so, bravo NHL. You’re pushing people directly into the arms of illegal streams.

I use unlocator with the Apple TV and it works great, no blackout for me.

Never fails to astound me how far behind the leagues are on streaming as a business opportunity. What a bunch of dinosaurs. I had no idea it was THAT bad. You shouldn't have to be a network administrator to sort out watching games. You would think if there were a year when they'd REALLY want to hammer out the details it would be this one, but alas..

I had forgotten about the problems with NHL TV and I subscribed again this year:help:.

I started having all kinds of problems last season with buffering and just basic play functions, mostly when I connected to Chromecast. It worked okay when I watched on the desktop or on my phone, so I thought it was just a compatibility issue, but I guess it's more than that.

Either way, it's pathetic that a multi billion dollar business can't get this seemingly simple and important thing right, and they're losing money because of it.

The Kings signed a deal with FSW in 2012 for $250M that runs through 2024, bringing in $21M a season. So there will be no direct to consumer option from the league or team for in market fans for 3 more years minimum.

A d2c offering would need to have something like 35000 subscribers paying $600 ($50/mo) a year to hit $21M annually. And you may be limited to just the in market fans, otherwise you take revenue away from NHL.tv.

The question is, do the Kings get 35k local viewers per game?

Bingo. If you run the hard numbers, a la carte numbers just never get there without all the non-sports fans subsidizing these sports channels.

Exactly. If you can draw 17k subscribers, you’re talking $1200/yr to keep your existing revenue, never mind growth.

While Kings have the right to sell their regional broadcast rights, its not clear who owns the national distribution of those rights. The NHL provides a package (nhl.tv) to watch out of region games for all teams, which streams regional coverage nationally. Unclear on how that revenue is split and whether the Kings would be able to circumvent that.
