Couldn't remember why Grosenick sounded familiar...spent a few years in the Sharks org.

Gonna be interesting to see what happens if, say, Hults or Bjornfot just cannot be denied the NHL roster. We always have camp surprises...

So if we have Grosenick backing up Villalta in Ontario, I wonder if they plan to leave Ingham in Germany for the season rather than try and find an ECHL spot for him.

15 guys signed to NHL/AHL contracts. Really 16, but Spence is in juniors. Is Moverare actually coming over? Sadek is probably just an ECHL guy, but you can easily grab basically any dude from that league in case of injury. Throw Alt in there and they probably have a battle between Anderson, Bjornfot, and Clague for 2 spots on the Kings.

Funny, Doughty has more experience, 919 GP, than the rest of the defensive group combined, 739 GP. If he were a player, the difference between Doughty and the rest, 180 games, would be the 3rd most experienced defenseman on the roster. And 5 of those 739 games are for Brickley, who will likely never touch NHL ice again.

Now that I mention it, Maatta has more experience, 427 GP, than the rest of the defensive group combined, 312 GP, save for Doughty. If he were a player, the difference between Maatta and the rest, 115 GP, would be the 3rd most experienced defenseman on the roster.

For comparisons sake, before the 13-14 season started:

Regehr - 944 GP
Mitchell - 719
Greene - 466
Doughty - 364
Martinez - 142
Voynov - 102
Muzzin - 56

Is it weird that Doughty, today, is only 25 games off of where Regehr was at the time in 2013? I'll answer; yes, it is. Doughty, today, is as old as Scuderi was when he signed in 2009. Yes, also weird.

I don't believe he can. All of the Kings AHL age prospects that are in Berlin are only eligible to participate in training camp and exhibition games in the DEL, not the regular season from what I have read. Ft. Wayne may not play this season (several ECHL teams are opting out), Kings seem to be tied to the Greenville Swamp Rabbits is the word, at least for now in the ECHL.

I’m gonna say Bjornfot and Anderson are on opening night roster. Moverare will play nhl games next season and Hults will impress in Ontario.

This is probably accurate, MacDermid will almost certainly be on the roster as well, he would have to clear waivers, Clague likely gets short end as he doesn't have to clear, unless they want to carry 8 defenseman.

What could we get for a 1.5 mil retained Tyler Johnson?

It's certainly pretty clear that Tampa did not dangle a big enough sweetner around the league the first go around to get someone to bite. They will have to dangle a 1st round pick and possibly some minimal retention (they can't do very much with the position they are in CAP wise). Either that or someone else will have to be traded. Even rumors that they might move Stamkos (seems unlikely, nor could many afford him + his injury history). GM's have Tampa over a barrel right now and no one is going to do the champs any favors.

I wonder if the Kings use their excess cap space and draft picks/prospects to become aggressive with some of the high end RFA's available. Blake has seemed to focus on building a good relationship with GM's around the league so far, kind of taking off the Dean approach of not trying to "win" every trade, but make trades that help both teams. So, I'm not sure if he is interested in rocking the boat at the moment, but with the unique environment the Kings could potentially be set up to acquire a high end young player.

It's certainly true there would be a few opportunities to do an offer sheet here, but GM's have long memories and there is little doubt that if a high percentage of the Kings prospects start coming into their own within a few short years, the Kings could find themselves in the same boat before too long. Would it be worth it? Only the respective GM can answer that question. With money so tight and almost zero revenue plus doubts about when play will resume, that may be a more significant factor than most realize.

If the Kings decided to take on Johnson, how bad could it be? Serious question. 5 million cap hit for 4 years.
What would it take to justify taking on that contract?
Ps: I'm not condoning. In fact, I'm against the idea. I'm just curious everyone's thoughts on it.

It doesn't seem like the Kings are in that market. They just seem to be perfectly content in doing what they've been doing since trading Pearson.

The only 30+ year olds the Kings have on their roster are Brown, Kopitar, Carter, Doughty, and Quick. I'm not seeing why that would change.

I guess you can never have enough younger assets, but the Kings are flush with those. Johnson doesn't seem like he'd be the difference between this team making or missing the playoffs next year, so the earliest he helps you is when he's 31? Assuming he's not taken by Seattle. Is Cal Foote still any good? I guess that could help. I don't know what TB's 1st in 2021 would do for you. That's likely a later pick. Not that you can't get good potential there.

The Kings have to be on his list for any of that to matter though.

Johnson's cap hit is too much for too long. Not in a flat cap with minimal HRR. The later couple years of that contract is when the cap space will be needed to sign our own RFAs.

And getting Johnson now means the team is handcuffed a few years from now in case a decent UFA sees how good the kings are and wants to sign up to win.

Avoid Tyler Johnson like the plague if you’re the kings. The odds of him cracking 8 goals on this roster are low. And it would reverse the positive trend of getting younger. The amount of futures you get for taking him on would be less impactful than the ice time you can give to a guy like Vilardi.

I’d rather see the team extend Iafallo and leave their options open for when they’re ready to take the next step and are in a position to make some significant additions to the roster.

If the cap stays flat next summer, the Kings will have a little over $28M in cap space available, and their only UFA will be Iafallo, RFAs will be Lizotte, Moore, Amadio and Roy.

2021 UFAs include:
Dougie Hamilton
Gabriel Landeskog
Jaden Schwartz
Tomas Tatar
Nick Foligno
Niklas Hjalmarsson
Kyle Palmieri
Brendan Gallagher
David Savard
Joel Armia
Tanner Pearson (pass)
Jamie Oleksiak
Blake Coleman
Barclay Goodrow

Plenty of decent support players after the top end guys, but 2022 is when you start to see some big names who could potentially hit the market, with names like Giroux, Malkin, Kessel, Letang, Subban, Bergeron, Gaudreau, Radulov, Pavelski, Barkov, Hertl, Forsberg, Parayko, S. Jones, Zibanejad, Kadri, Rielly all scheduled to become UFAs. That’s also when the contracts for Carter and Brown expire.

Duhatschek on The Athletic had a nice blurb about the Lias Andersson trade in his latest article. He said it reminded him of the Markus Naslund trade, another Swede who went from a disappointing start to stardom after a change of scenery.

We can only dream.

Was an interesting point on the expectation that European kids in particular are all ready and yet that some will naturally take longer to assimilate than others--language, cultural barriers as well as hockey barriers.

Yep, this might be the hardest part since it feels like we're on the verge--but now we just have to exercise patience and see what we have in house before going on any kind of shopping spree. But if there's a team with the combination of assets and ownership that's also free of rush pressure, it's us. Wonderful position to be in right now.

I guess. At least Naslund had 19 goals and 52 points in 66 games before being traded to Van. He did only have 6 goals and 15 points in his first 85 games though.

That's probably taking it too far. If Kempe can get 11, and a broken down Carter can get 17, Johnson is cracking at least 10. Wagner and Lewis had 6, and Johnson is bit better than them.
