The second line is the albatross in the room.
Several combinations have been tried. While is has been a big step to have Vilardi take the 2C spot, AA and Carter have not worked out.
There is little cohesiveness and rarely do all 3 touch the puck on one of their shifts. I honestly think Gabe would have more success,
if there was a higher level of talent playing with him. Yes, he is responsible for his play, but the other 2 must be doing their part.
The only fix is to try something different, that has NOT been tried. Line 1 is fine and the JAD line is fine. But, line 2 is broken, so the only
fix is to take a line 1 player or acquire a legit top 6 player, or take the best forward out of Ontario and give them a shot. While this may
put a lot of pressure on the Ontario callup, it could still be tried. We've seen Clague and Strand come up and succeed. There should certainly
be a forward that could come up and have success - when most would consider a defensemen coming up from the AHL, is more difficult to
have real success.
I propose moving Vilardi to 1RW and taking the 2C burden off of him. Brown is a vet that can play on any line. It would be interesting, to see
what Vilardi could do, playing with the most talent...and taking him out of the center position. While Carter can't play center, or top 6,
move him down to line 3. Call up Kupari. He's made a big step this year and has the ability, skills and makeup to play now. While
it may be best to let him flourish and finish in the AHl this year, it really does not hurt him, his development or the Kings, to try him at
2C. Give him a week there. It really would not hurt, at this time. His first callup, he looked ok...a little tentative, but he was fine, otherwise.
Most ALL of the Kings that have had a cup of coffee, go back down, improve and the second time they look better.
Try this:::::::::::::::
Iafallo Koiptar Vilardi
Athanasiou Kupari Brown
Lemieux Kempe Carter
Grundstrom JAD Moore
Lizotte
Possibly try Kempe at 2LW with Kupari and drop AA down.
