The Kings aren't a cup contender with Eichel and a top 4 defenseman. They are a black hole team with no future, similar to where they were at in 2018.

It still blows my mind how many people are on board with a slow rebuild with Doughty and Kopitar's contract situations.
Gotta say Herby...you get it.
Sunk Cost Fallacy:

Individuals/organizations commit the sunk cost fallacy when they continue a behavior or endeavor as a result of previously invested resources (time, money or effort) (Arkes & Blumer, 1985). This fallacy, which is related to loss aversion and status quo bias, can also be viewed as bias resulting from an ongoing commitment.

Julia explains why the Kings shouldn't trade the future just because they're paying Kopitar and Doughty:

Well if they did get Eichel and a top 4 LHD they'd be much much improved. Depends on the cost of course. I don't see how a 24 year-old Eichel and a (presumably) 23-27 year-old top 4 LHD would give them "no future". That seems like total hyperbole. Add a couple of scoring wingers to that group and you're infinitely improved from this year.

Theyd need Eichel, 2 top 4 defensemen, a scoring winger, guys like Byfield Kaliyev Vilardi and Lias to contribute, and a bottom sixer that goes out there and plays like an animal.

I agree that paying them doesn't matter if they aren't paying anyone else, which they aren't.

Yea it's that easy! Especially when LA isn't known to attract FA. Where is all this going to come from? How many rebuilding teams fast tracked it and had success? Why aren't the Ducks and Hawks doing this? The Hawks had Toews and Kane in their prime and have yet to fast track.

These guys might be traded for all the stuff LA needs and for what? To sneak into the playoffs and maybe win a round? Eichel is in his prime production years for 3-4 more years and that's if his neck is ok. It seems some here just want to see Kopitar and Doughty get another shot while mortgaging the rest of the future.

I was just saying if they wanted to be contenders thats what theyd probably need. Im not for trading any of the young guns. Not yet at least.
The Kopitar Doughty cup train left years ago.

It goes beyond sunk cost. It is pretty obvious that Blake did the rebuild with the intent of being competitive while Kopitar and Doughty were still on the team. Proof of that? His stated goal of returning to the playoffs in 21-22. Next year if you're counting.

Are you old enough to remember when the Angels traded for Rod Carew? The players they gave up included a young superstar-to-be Ken Landreaux. Never heard of him? I guess he didn't become the superstar he was expected to be. When asked how the Angels could give up a young superstar-to-be for a 33 year-old Carew, their GM responded that if the scouting department can't find another Landreaux in the next 5 years they shouldn't be here anyway. Turned out to be a great trade for the Angels.

I won't even discuss the Gretzky trade to LA for a huge chunk of their future at the time when the Kings were one of the worst teams in the league. On a more balanced note, did the Flyers screw up by acquiring Lindros even at the cost of Forsberg? Arguable but the trade definitely improved the Flyers for almost a decade.

I'm not pushing an Eichel trade but let's say he was acquired for Vilardi, Turcotte, and a 1st. What happens? Kings are instantly better by upgrading from Vilardi to Eichel at 2c. The age difference is minimal. Yes, they lose Turcotte but they still have Byfield in the wings. How many centers do you need behind Kopitar, Eichel, and Byfield? It would be a no brainer if Eichel is healthy.

The Ducks are two years behind the Kings and they don't have any productive stars like Kopitar and Doughty. Not a good comparison. In two years we can talk. The Hawks are constantly trying to upgrade their roster every year with mixed results. Don't forget they probably make the playoffs this year if Toews was healthy.

That's completely irrelevant.

Ducks have been rebuilding longer than LA. They had productive players like Getzlaf, Fowler, and Lindholm with a good young goalie.

It's the ONLY relevant thing! It's what Blake's full intention was! If Blake had said this was going to be a 7 year rebuild then we'd be having a totally different conversation about the next couple of years. But he pointed to NEXT YEAR as the goal for returning to the playoffs. How is that irrelevant??

When did he say this? Before or after the Muzzin deal? Can you name a team that did a 2 year rebuild then traded picks and prospects to fast track? NYR tried but they don't count because the talent pool they get to choose from is far greater than LA. Every FA, college player, and soon to be FA (Trouba) wants to play there.

Ducks were in the playoffs last exactly when LA was. And the Ducks have never sold of any "core" pieces for a rebuild. They've kept their most marketable assets in Rakell and Manson. Getzlaf/Perry aged out and Kesler/Eaves got hurt. Any trades they've made (Ritchie, Montour, Kase) have been tinkering. The Ducks have probably bottomed out this year (or maybe next) and have to decide what to do with Rakell, Manson, and maybe Gibson. Trade them and it's a full rebuild. Extend them and it's a retool. We'll see what the next year bring for the Ducks. But they have NOT initiated a full rebuild like Blake did in LA. Your statement is just factually incorrect.

I can't believe that people actually care about this sort of thing. IT DOESN'T MATTER.

Their always going to tell you the rosiest thing possible. That's what their supposed to do.

Yea like our President (and any politician for that matter) they're blowing smoke to make you feel good.

Yup Blake did and he's early into it, no time to make short sighted moves to sneak into 8th and lose to Colorado. The Ducks really have no clue what direction they're going but in Murray's defense, their owners a tight ass.

One other poster has said this as well...lying to the fans is to be accepted. I don't think AEG would accept that nor should the STH who shell out tens of thousands of dollars for tickets, parking, food, etc. I don't even think you guys accept it but it's the last argument you can make before capitulating.

Eichel's character is questionable and he's not a guy I empty the cupboards for especially this early into a rebuild.

I agree. To me, in a way, he is quitting on Buffalo. We already have a team of quitters. If we empty the cupboards, I don't want someone who you will ever question if they are giving 100%.

It's really quite simple. If he tells the STH this summer that the rebuild is behind schedule and explains why then the discussion about improving the roster for next year is over. He can set a new goal for making the playoffs and it can be 29-30 for all I care as long as he is honest. Then he can explain what the team is going to do with Kopitar and Doughty...trade them or make them suffer through the rest of the rebuild. All I'm doing is holding Blake accountable for his goal of returning to the playoffs in 21-22.

The irony is that if he says that he's going to make big changes this summer with the goal of returning to the playoffs next year as originally promised, this board is going to erupt in anger.

Eichel is a legit superstar if he's not hampered by that injury. There is zero chance I would trade Byfield for him. Just doesn't make sense.

But if we got him for a package of say Turcotte+Iafallo/Vilardi+our first this year and next year (if they take Vilardi instead of Iafallo I would replace a first with a second) I would do it (provided his health checks out). Although that's the absolute max I would give up.

A team that has Eichel/Kopi/Byfield down the middle. With a ton more forward prospects including Vilardi/Iafallo, Kaliyev, Kupari, Fagemo, Thomas, Madden, etc.... To surround them with. Add Doughty and our young cheap D core. Legit G in Petersen. Plus about 15 mil in cap space still left over...

Takes a special type of glass half empty to think that team is a "black hole" that can't compete.

That team would be incredibly scary especially once that cap space was spent and the roster further tweaked.
