They didn’t have much talent to trade off. They tried a hockey deal and prospect deal that hasn’t panned out and did some minor moves. They haven’t made a major splash to go for a cup with Kane and Toews in their prime. Why? Because they didn’t have assets much like LA until now. Hawks have drafted well...

They were in cap hell for several years which is the main reason their emerging dynasty fell off a cliff. That happens in a cap world. Either way, the situation is not comparable to LA.

Maybe we're agreeing more than we think we are...let's find out!

If Blake's goal is to make a playoff run in 21-22 then absolutely keep 11 and 8. But that also requires making some big and necessary improvements which will make some fans very unhappy.

If Blake says that realistically the team cannot compete for a playoff spot for another 2-3 years then the best option is to go all in for the future and get a boatload of assets for 11 and 8...or at least one of them. Imagine the assets Doughty could return...it would be a tanksters dream! Kopitar would return less but still would provide assets that could pay off down the road.

So to me it is one direction or the other...going the middle ground (keep 11 and 8 but don't try to make big improvements for the playoffs for another 2-3 years) is just the worst possible course. You aren't helping the present and you're taking away from the future. And worst of all, you've got the risk that 11 and 8 just emotionally give up and are actually a negative influence on the very kids they are being kept around to mentor.

I don't see how any of that is controversial but...

But if they do that...then we're in the Buffalo/Edmonton situation you always warn against, with a bunch of neverending youth with no insulation.

I just disagree that they should be trying to sling either guy for assets. They're not short on assets.

They are very comparable. Both were in cap hell with no assets and both kept their star players making too much money. Now they have more cap space and assets during their rebuild and the Hawks are further along in the process. Neither have made a big move yet...don’t see how they aren’t comparable.

You are absolutely correct! We do agree! But that also implies that Blake needs to be aggressive this summer to improve the team. A top 4 LHD with offensive skills and two top 6 forwards that can combine to deliver 40-50 goals are essential. Otherwise we can expect a repeat (or worse) of this year. Just imagine this year without a PP for the entire year...Buffalo-esque for sure.

Blake did not start the rebuild because of cap issues. That is just patently false.

How's that working for the Blackhawks?

Better than LA. They came pretty close to a playoff spot with Toews injured all year. I know you value success as either (1) SC finals or (2) bottom 3 finish but most teams won't fall into those two buckets.

No reasonable person was expecting playoffs. What I was expecting at this point was a team with a pulse.

I was expecting them to compete for a playoff spot but probably fall short which is what happened. The problem is how it ended. I wanted them to go down swinging with everything they had but they just sat back on the ropes and took the beating.

They need more skilled guys that can create on their own and a system that pushes the play and not sit back. The 1-3-1 is bullshit! I also feel like this teams needs more guys that will take the body. I'm sick of this poke check shit. Finish the play with some checks into the boards so next time the opponent will need to think about bracing for the hit and might make a turnover or make a bad pass or slow down so the poke check actually works. I'm sick of the flyby poke check. Put the fear into someone. Get me someone like Jordan Greenway from Minnesota. A skilled guy that can bring the body.

I think the expansion draft is the perfect way to use the cap space we have, prospects to deal and open spots to protect some guys that other teams can't.

That's not all I value. If a team has plenty of up and coming players on the roster, I want to see continuous improvement. Since this team doesn't have that yet, I am fine with them finishing lower in the standings.

Imagine if we had traded Kopitar, Doughty, Brown, Quick, Carter at exactly the right time, years ago. Then we would have had the best prospect pool in the league and a ton of cap space....

Man that would be amazing.

We are currently considered to have the best or one of the best pools with tons of cap space.

I imagine the Kings would be a lot further along in the rebuild with their best young players in the NHL instead of Ontario.

Yeah for sure. We win the cup in 2014 then blow it up. Get McDavid in 2015 NHL draft and then luck into Matthews. Our team would be filthy. Probably would have lost out on Byfield but who cares.

But anyways we didn't make the EA NHL 15 Franchise Mode ultimate rebuild series of trades. So maybe we can all just agree to stop lamenting the past and just enjoy the fact that either way we still ended up with an amazing prospect pool and an excellent cap situation while retaining some of our favorite vets.

Nice hyperbole with the 2015 BS.
