Plus I don't know if having guys like Robertson go down for their D+2 is even good for the league. I can't imagine anyone enjoys watching a guy who's good enough for the NHL playoffs to sleepwalk to 1.5 goals/game against their team. Maybe it's interesting for a few games just to be able to settle the bar bet of how much an NHLer would score in the CHL. Imagine if Marner had to stay down for D+2 because of a lockout, is that a good situation for the CHL? He'd be PPG+ in the AHL as is, now put him in a league where his opponents are still his size.

It is about getting people in the seats. I don't think it negatively affects it and while a few more random Leafs fans may make a trip to go see a Peterborough or London game to see those guys in person, I don't think it is exactly a huge draw.

The main thing is the quality of the team goes way down and those teams lose an asset, but it should all balance out over time.

That article is silly. I'm sure the Leafs wouldn't mind him signing a 2 year extension if Amirov gets minutes. The KHL is a better league than the AHL.
The Leafs aren't exactly starving for depth either. When you have so many players that a guy like Robertson may not make the roster after the season he just had it's not exactly a great situation for Amirov to come over and break the lineup.

Maybe yeah they'd like to get him over here and acclimated to the smaller ice and given every situation playing with the Marlies and a ton of minutes, but if the kid feels more comfortable developing over there, well there are different strokes for different folks.

Personally I'd rather have a ready to drop on the top line pro when he comes over so 2 years from now should get him prepared. Look at Kuznetsov, Panarin, even this year a guy like Kaprizov is joining the Wild after over-ripening in the KHL for bit, and is a calder contender.

Yup. Him playing for a lesser team like Salavat is fantastic too as he doesn't need to fight KHL stars for playing time. This is best case scenario imo unless he legitimately looks ready next season, and even then with his extension he should be getting big minutes.

Not good. Are you telling me that there's not a single defenseman drafted after this guy that we rather have in 2023 or 2024?

This is a good point. If Salavat knows he'll be there the next couple years they'll (hopefully) invest more time into him and give him more minutes, seeing as how the team isn't really all that good. It would be nice if there's an opt-out clause should he be getting 4-5 minutes a game and it's obviously a hindrance to his development, at which point they could bring him over early, but assuming all goes well I don't see a reason to rush him over.

I see Kaprizov as a comparable in that he'd be coming over, fully developed, after dominating the KHL, ready to step into a top 6 role immediately. We can hope his development path is similar, if not a little bit quicker.

Not sure if the extension has been signed, or if it’s still a rumour at this point, however I don’t really see the issue.

He’s looked good, but he still would’ve played next season in the AHL and most likely, the year after as well, with maybe some call up chances.

Especially since we have Robertson and Hallander who will be cracking the NHL within those 2 years as well most likely.

So instead he just plays those full 2 years in the KHL, then after the second year ends, joins the Marlies, or even the Leafs for the end of their seasons.

However, Amirov said before he was finishing this year in the KHL, and then it’ll depend on what the Leafs want, so if he signs an extension, it’s because the Leafs are okay with it.

You draft BPA in the first round not by need. Dubas has it right. This guy is a stud.
The draft is not the only way to fill-out your roster. You can trade and sign UFAs. In fact, you can trade an Amirov for a ton down the line to address a need and receive better defensive assets than what were available in the draft if needed.
I don't want a Gauthier in the first round picked again.

The facts are Leafs prospect Pool looks fantastic since Dubas took over. Doesn't look like his philosophy is wrong at all in regards to the draft.

So you believe in the philosophy of drafting by need in the 1st round? I simply can't agree with that.
Again, Leafs prospect looks great since Dubas took over. That includes him always picking BPA.
Especially when the players won’t be ready for 2-3 years when the needs will be different. BPA is obviously the right call.

You ALWAYS draft the best player available in the 1st round. If Amirov was Canadian, he would be playing in the CHL next year and likely the AHL after that. I see no issue with him signing a 2 year extension in the KHL. If anything, he'll be playing against better competition for the next two years.

He's not a top 3 pick. He was picked 15th. 15th overall typically don't just jump straight into the NHL.

I'm not criticizing our drafting, but I think we might end up wishing that we'd drafted Alexei Protas at some point. He was drafted 91st overall (Washington) this year, and is a 6'6" C, who put up 80 points in 58 games in the WHL last year, and currently has 9 points, in 26 games with Dinamo Minsk in the KHL.
