So Zegras and Newhook are apparently getting second interviews with the team, according to Rick Dhaliwal. He feels 1-2 other prospects will also get a follow up interview.

Twitter?

I knew it had to be Zegras.

Edit: Dhaliwal may be referencing prospects other than Newhook and Broberg when talking about "3-4 prospects to be given extended interviews". That is possible. However, I think he's talking about the same group. It lines up.

Highly unlikely that Turcotte is there at 10. Scouts know how good the US born players are this year.

Not surprised we are giving zegras a second interview especially if brackett is still in charge, not sure how he gets to 10, he is one of the most skilled players in the draft and will be one of the best imo.

He likely won't get to 10 which is why Canucks are interviewing him again a day before the draft when everyone is already in town rather than flying him next week.

My educated enough to be dangerous opinion of this class.
Best to worst for my top 10 (where they get drafted)
Kakko (2)
Hughes (1)
Byram (3)
Turcotte(4)
Zegras (7)
Cozens (5)
Newhook (10)
Caufield (6)
Boldy (8)
Harley (12)

Broberg plays both sides.

LHS/RHS who cares at the draft when you have so many holes on D?

Yeah. Really could not care less about handedness in a defensive draft pick, when we have such a deficit of bluechip defensive futures all around. Even if Juolevi turns it around, we need help everywhere, and plenty of the LHD can play the other side anyway.

Button always has one player way off the board

I don't think it's really "way off the board" in reality...it's just "way off the consensus".

That's not what Button's list means at all though. It has nothing at all to do with projecting where guys will go in the draft, and everything to do with which guys Craig feels are going to be the best 5 or 6 years from now. People constantly act like it's some outrageously wild thing when Button likes a player significantly more/less than the consensus...but take a gander at some re-drafts 5 years after the fact, and you'll see that it's not that crazy to have guys ranked quite a ways off the consensus. Not that Craig is batting 100% on those outliers from consensus, but i swear you could hand a lot of fans a re-draft list cheat sheet from 6 years in the future, and they'd scoff and throw it out because it's got outliers.

Yay, @biturbo19 someone else loves Kolyachonok as much as me. I think he could go top 20. If he stayed in London all year I bet he would easily be a consensus top 15 pick.

Sadly, you're probably right. Some team in the 20s is gonna grab Kolyachonok and probably be really happy with him. Never know though, teams can get weird when a prospect is from a country that doesn't have a big track record of producing NHLers, or when they've been "hidden" on a bad team.

Being in London probably really would've thrust him into the spotlight and he likely would've solidified himself as a much higher pick. But who knows, he could still go high anyway, or way lower than he should. I wouldn't even be opposed to the idea of moving up and handful of spots to get him if he's still there at the beginning of the 2nd, depending on the cost.

He's got some rough edges here and there, but all the traits are there to become a Top-3 defenceman. Decent size, really good skating, generally defends smartly using that speed and a good stick, moves the puck nicely and knows when to jump in, not afraid of the physical side of the game, and more offensive upside than the numbers might show, considering the circumstances. So much to like there.

I'm just at a complete loss for trying to project how that ~20-40 range might go and who that might leave for us. But that's one i'd be really hoping for.

Kokkonen, Bjornfot, Vlasic and Thomson would be other good targets at 40 if they want to go D. Plenty of good forwards there too with guys like Fagemo (my favorite), Tracey, Afanasyev and Legare. Beecher also seems to get a lot of love too but he wouldn't be my first choice.

If we left this draft with some sort of combination of Newhook/Krebs + Bjornfot/Thomson that would be a great haul imo

How would you compare Pelletier and his upside vs Anthony Beauvillier as a prospect a few years back?

It is interesting that in production equivalencies, the Q might actually be slightly tougher now. Seems like a lot of people out there who still treat the Q like a second tier citizen in the CHL. I'd imagine that reflects pretty well on a guy like Lavoie then, whose combined full season+playoff sample is within arms reach of Pelletier's full season+playoff ppg figure?

I'm treating the QMJHL strength of league talk as anecdotal. It's interesting, but I don't think it's the determinant to production. Pelletier is just the best CHL producer. That's how I regard him.

Not sure how I would compare him to Beauvillier. Haven't thought about it.

He's also 6 ft officially. With a little more weight, he will be a multi-pronged threat.

Was playing around with the draft simulator and somehow got this pipedream of a scenario

10: D BOWEN BYRAM VANCOUVER
40: D VILLE HEINOLA LUKKO
71: D TOBIAS BJORNFOT DJIRGARDENS
102: C VALENTINE NUSSBAUMER SHAWINIGAN
133: RW PATRICK MOYNIHAN U.S. U-18
156: RW COLE SCHWINDT MISSISSAUGA
164: D ALEXANDER YAKOVENKO MUSKEGON
180: C ADAM NAJMAN BENATKY
195: RW KEVIN WALL CHILLIWACK

Talk about rebuilding your defence prospect cupboard....

This is a good point. It would be interesting to see score the accuracy of draft lists and media guys by comparing them to standings 5-6 years later. Anyone know if something like this exists?

So with the 2nd interview rumours it sound more like we may be leaning towards: zegras, boldy, Newhook? Or am I missing someone obvious?

Think they must have Zegras pretty high up there. I doubt he's available to us, but they got lucky with Pettersson and Hughes, so maybe they thing he might be sitting there at 10 OA. Newhook's probably the back-up plan. I think the defensemen thing is a bit of a smoke screen. Even if we do take one I wouldn't be surprised if we shock everyone and take Cam York. I would be a little miffed if we passed on Boldy assuming he's available, but our US UNDTP guys know their stuff.

Another potential piece to the puzzle... Dennis Bernstein of T4P covers the Kings and released a article saying the Kings are high on Kirby Dach with their 5th overall pick.

Here is Pronman's mock draft, lmao at anyone paying a subscription for articles, the internet is loaded with free information and opinions, rather not pay for it:

  1. Jack Hughes
  2. Kaapo Kakko
  3. Alex Turcotte
  4. Bowen Byram
  5. Kirby Dach
  6. Trevor Zegras
  7. Dylan Cozens
  8. Philip Broberg
  9. Peyton Krebs
  10. Cole Caufield
  11. Matthew Boldy
  12. Arthur Kaliyev
  13. Moritz Seider
  14. Vasili Podkolzin
  15. Cam York
  16. Spencer Knight
  17. Alex Newhook
  18. Victor Soderstrom
  19. Ryan Suzuki
  20. Philip Tomasino
  21. Raphael Lavoie
  22. Thomas Harley
  23. Bobby Brink
  24. Nils Hoglander
  25. Nicholas Robertson
  26. Jakob Pelletier
  27. Lassi Thomson
  28. Patrik Puistola
  29. Ryan Johnson
  30. Ville Heinola
  31. Alex Vlasic

Honestly, if Podkolzin is available at our pick, Canucks should just select him. It's a high value pick at 10 and he's been ranked top 3 all year long. I could actually see him developing into a first line player.

Again would be very happy with Caufield at this pick, moreso than the earlier mock that had us taking Newhook. But again if we pass on Boldy I will not be happy. The guy just seems like the absolute perfect compliment to Elias and Brock.
