I've read some mock drafts where they got us picking Newhook. From what I've read and seen of him, I'd be very happy to land him. With his speed he should fit well with this group too. Thought he was projected to go higher. Is it reasonable to think he's still available with our pick? What is the biggest concern with him?

It’s reasonabke he’s be there at 14. It’s reasonable that we’d pick him.

Concerns are that he plays in a weak league in the BCHL that seems to be in a decline or downturn in terms of overall talent from just a few years ago. So hisbstatistical output is great but hard to project.

Also that for whatever reason, he’s not being invited/making the big Team Canada tournaments, or is underperforming in them. He also apparently had a tough end to the playoffs where he was neutralized more than some would expect. Added together, these factors cast some doubt about ability to play in big situations or against the best competition.

Having said all of that, he’s supposedly a fantastic skater, a physically strong kid. He’s a center, he can make plays and score goals. Also supposed to work pretty hard and be pretty good both ways. He’s headed to Boston College among with Matthew Boldy to meet up with Oliver Wahlstrom. Should be a great time for that trio.

Chayka won’t like his January birthday, though. I think of him as probably more boom/bust than the likes of McMichael or Tomasino. I could see gambling on the higher upside of Newhook or Caufield at 14th, rather then taking safer bets who less potential.

Probably a fine pick at 14th.

Why do i feel like Kessel coming here would be a disaster? 31 isn't old but i just feel like with our luck that 14th overall pick could be the next mid-round surprise and Phil would simultaneously start his decline.

I want Hoffman, a signed Hoffman.
Anyone we trade for will forget how to score. We made Tony Amonte and Olli Jokinen into scrubs who can't score.

To think some of you thought we were going to move in the draft is funny. We had a 1% chance to win the thing. We knew we were going late.

Trade the pick.

We weren't winning the lotto. Why are people so upset that we didn't win or that someone else did?

New Jersey needs help. Chicago got a bump up of nine spots. So what? The league is better when those two are healthy again. It's not even close to Edmonton territory. You cannot even see the shores of lottoland from there.
The league is better when all their teams are healthy. We need help more than anyone. Chicago had their fun in the sun from getting Kane and Toews. NJ, two first OA in three years. No body but Edmonton has that luck.

I could see:
  1. NJD-Kakko
  2. NYR-Hughes
  3. CHI-Turcotte
  4. COL-Byram
  5. LAK-Dach
  6. DET-Podkolzin
  7. BUF-Cozens
  8. EDM-Krebs
  9. ANA-Zegras
  10. VAN-Boldy
  11. PHI-Kaliyev
  12. MIN-Caufield
  13. FLA-Soderstrom
  14. ARI-Newhook

There is high upside at 14th.

I don't follow you when you want to trade this pick. The trade-partners will basically jump at it because they see the massive upside. OK, I know they might see the advantage of a cost-controlled ELC over someone with an expensive contract, but that advantage should be used on something else.

1. I’d consider 43rd overall for Christian Fischer to be pretty good value at this point. Would you do 14th+Fischer for Zucker+43rd?
You can't keep on giving away young unproven players without knowing what you have in him. This is a terrible deal. If you want to trade Fischer, get a kid his age back, like we did in the Schmaltz trade. I just don't understand how you guys a few years ago wanted to trade all the vets and play the kids, even though they weren't ready, now that they are maturing, you want to start trading them for vets on their down side of their career.

...
Probably a fine pick at 14th.
Thanks! I believe I read last summer that he was projected to be a top 5 pick. Haven't followed the prospects nor the draft rankings since, so was surprised to see him around our spot. Seems like good value to me, I rather see us picking a high ceiling kid than a "safe" bet.

I feel like if we’re going to get lucky and stumble upon possible top line NHLers outside of the consensus Top10 - I’d look at Caufield and Newhook. Both have risks that drop them to our range but both have more absolute upside than other kids in their range. It’d be nice to get both!

So let’s say the Top12 on McKenzie’s latest poll are the twelve that go first (in some order). That leaves Caufield and Newhook both on the board for Florida’s pick.

Let’s say by that time they’ve got tentative deals in place for Panarin and Bobrovsky. Would they bite on Fischer+45th for Luongo+13th? They drop their 1st pick 32 spots and clear 4.5mil in cap in the process. We agree to buy him out immediately and he can return to the Florida organization as a goalie consultant, right away.

We pick Newhook and Caufield 13th and 14th. Florida signs Panarin and Bobrovsky. Luongo gets his money upfront and doesn’t have to leave home.

Win-win-win???

I really don't want Jason Zucker. I think he's closer to the 40-point guy than 60-point guy. Not worth the the price IMO.
He’s 27 years old and has averaged 24g/82gp in his NHL career so far. Question is does that sustain/improve as he hits his mid-prime, or does it dip because of Coyotes voodoo curses?

Don’t love this. Not particularly worried about it though, since Chayka doesn’t seem to draft the older kids.

I'm not worried too much either, because if there's a hint of character issues then Chayka will stay away from the prospect (see: Hayton draft).

Two more goals last night. Granted one was an empty net, but he's dominating the Q playoffs.

There comes a time when we need to start developing high end home grown talent. If we were a primo destination for FA's I might be more inclined to agree with you. Since we're not, we need to start making and stocking high quality picks one after the other, year after year. I don't want to trade the pick for a 2nd line wing. I want to start stocking Tucson like Detroit stocked their AHL club, year after year. That's how you manage a 20 year playoff run.

I honestly haven't done a ton of research at this point, but there are only about 2-3 players that I would feel really comfortable with at #14: Krebs, Newhook, and Seider. I think two of them may still be available, but need to let combine and interviews shake everything out.

If we are not enamored with anyone at #14, do we drop back and take on a player? I am thinking something like where the Washington Capitals are with Burakovsky. Burakovsky is on the last year of a slightly overpaid RFA deal with an AAV of $3.0M. Would #14 for the Capitals 1st (assumed at #27) and Burakovsky make sense? I don't think we look at anything long term with Burakovsky, just a 2 year bridge deal, maybe something like $3.2 M in 19-20 and $3.4 M in 20-21.

Are there any other possibilities like this to snag a player from a team picking later where we may not be totally in love with players at #14?

I would just rather see if we could still get a Caufield, McMichael, Tomisino, or Foote in the back end of the 1st round, rather than potentially reaching at #14.
