A lot of talk of him being the second best skater of the draft, behind Hughes and ahead of Newhook. A smooth skating blisteringly fast defenseman is something this team doesn't really have. Nurse is good, but not great.

I like what he adds to our prospect pool and the potential of him and McDavid flying up the ice together is so enticing.

wake up feeling better about this kid...elite skating, good competitiveness and will play in all situations

top pair potential, according to Craig Button...needs to work on his shot

watching his Hlinka highlites have made me excited for the kid...plus he recently won best D-man at the Under18s

Nurse had great to borderline elite skating. He was the second best skater in that draft behind Mackinnon

Watching Broberg's highlights, the first thing I noticed is holy crap this guy uses a long stick, even for a defenseman. Not a bad thing by any means, but just something I noticed

Nurse is one of the best skating Dmen drafted in the last decade. His skating is near elite, and almost unheard of for a player his size.

The prospect is good. But he is 15 to 20th prospect. Hes a similar caliber prospect to Klefbom at the time (klefbom was leading junior national teams, highly herlded)

To me it's a bad bet. Their is better horses to put your money on. But he could turn into Klefbom and I'll be over the moon

Holland also seemed to like the Hamilton option. His reasoning is you get to play more games, be relied on heavier. Have a bad game? Gotta get back on the bus and okay again. In Sweden he would probably be a bottom or middle pairing guy, they don't play as much either. He would be playing against men but Holland doesn't seem to think that matters till later in the development either, playing time matters more. At least in Holland's mind

Exactly, I personally like that option as well.

More ice time, more games, in NA, etc.

Lots of minutes and time to work on the areas he needs to work on.

It would be interesting if by some miracle they are willing to draft Kaliyev so we can have them play together.

Really good article about Broberg and why Holland drafted him in the Athletic.

That’s a crock of ****. Nurse drove the net plenty and as a matter of fact it’s the other way around as Broberg rarely drives the net. You should read the article provided by @Burnt Biscuits, jd Burke backs it up with video and analysis.
I'm speaking off my viewings of Broberg in international tournaments against kids (which is what we're comparing Nurse to). Find me even a few clips of Nurse cutting to the net or attacking the middle of the ice with any success in his draft year, Broberg did that the entire Hlinka and U18. For Nurse almost all of his scoring came from the point or from driving wide and throwing the puck into the crease when he ran out of room in his draft year.

You realize there were 5 defensemen taken after Broberg to pick 20. Zero chance he's available if we traded down.

Theres still preasure to find forwards this year. NOBODY we were drafting is playing this season so your point is meaningless.

I dont mind the pick. Can't have enough defensive prospects. The ones we have are still no where near a #1.
One can easily argue that all 5 Dmen drafted after him are better than him

Was there any talks of Edmonton moving down?
“I had one call, but we made a decision to stick

After sleeping on it, I'm still pretty pissed about the pick. No reason to take him where he was taken, reach pick to say the least. But let's hope that our scouts are smarter than average for once, and the player can prove all of the naysayers wrong.

olland post draft interview said he wanted him in the OHL playing important minutes
That sounds extremely dumb and North American centric. Why would he develop better playing with and against teenagers than playing with one the most succesful Swedish team the past decade and against men?
Especially the way 17/18 year olds get treated regarding ice time and usage
Adam Larsson logged tough minutes as a 17-year old at the same team. If he's good enough he will play many minutes this upcoing season.

Once they made the pick I knew there would be an explosion in Oil town. I like Philip Broberg. Personally I would have liked to see them select Trevor Zegras but the Oilers have lots of needs, we do need puck moving D-Men with offensive upside and with Evan Bouchard up and coming we could have a great blue line in a few years. D-Men are valued more then forwards so if the Oilers need to they can always make some trades for a forward down the line. I also get the feeling that the Oilers are going to try and get a decent winger in the off season in free agency most likely, who will be NHL tested and ready to play which alot of just drafted players are not. Now if Zegras becomes a star player and Broberg a dud then we'll all be pissed but only time will tell and I am not upset at the Broberg pick.

McKenzie had Broberg at #8 in mid season rankings. Not sure why people are losing their minds on this pick.
None of our other Defensive prospect are going to be a true #1. Broberg might though.

Sigh. For those of us not wanting to pay for pay wall what does it state.

This is a bad pick imo and as much for Swedish passport. If Bro was domestic would Holland have picked him?

Did we pick him because he was at Hlinka cup here?

I can't see the reason for this pick as a first rounder.

I wonder if his commitement to play for Boston U is the reason why the Oilers may have been hesitant to draft Zegras.

You have to remember that with NCAA players, the moment they sign an entry level deal they lose NCAA eligibility. That's why NCAA players won't sign a ELC until they are NHL ready.

And if they stay in NCAA for 3 seasons, then they can sign with the team which drafted them or wait couple weeks and pick they team they want.

With a player commited with NCAA, I would be surprised if part of the interview was not a long disscussion about their willigness to sign an ELC and play in AHL, and things like this. And if the player makes it clear that it is NHL or NCAA, and if the team thinks the player is not NHL ready, you probably stay away from that pick.

It's 4 years. 1 year of USHL (or BCHL or whatever) and then 3 years of college.

I just find it a little funny to see that the guy we took 1st is ranked lower than the guy we took 2nd in one of the draft guides I was reading leading into the draft. Excited for both though.
