2019 Draft: 1st Pick: Philip Broberg

He looks pretty good on video, wish he had a bit more production on the men’s league though. If he breaks out this season the Oilers will look like geniuses, hope it happens.

I don't get the hype over the Zegras kid (or any if these American kids). I'm sure they'll be decent hockey players, but how often were they playing against men? Half of the highlights I've seen, they scored against goalies that looked like they wouldn't be out of place in the 80s.

That what I wonder as well. They’re basically an all star recruit team playing against teams who didn’t have one player good enough to make their team.

About 1/3rd of their games are against NCAA teams, I believe.

Been a long time since I have cringed at HF posts as hard as I did yesterday after our pick.

Same here. I ended up logging off.

Two concerns with guys like Zegras. First is whether he earned those gaudy stats. If he did, what a prospect. If he can’t carry a line, though, maybe he’s overrated.

And I wonder if the Oilers’ stink is causing a lot of USNDT players to show disinterest. We don’t draft too many of them. Perhaps they are more interested in playing for US teams in the long term, so we tend to pick Euros and CHL players early in drafts, knowing that they’re more likely to agree to extensions here.

As long as it’s Holland’s pick, I’m all behind Broberg.

Idk, he seems kind of overrated just on the virtue of his stats... but like... look at his line mates?

You have to wonder which of those kids were just riding the wave of plying with the best kids from their country in their age group.

Could you imagine the damage a CHL all star lineup could do if they played together as a team?

Better watch out, apparently those American kids will all be elite, 1st line players.

One thing I have wondered, is a guy like Sam Gagner was said to be propped up by playing with Kane, and we have seen the results. Maybe Holland and some other GMs looked at these 7 guys from the US National team and wondered "which of these guys is a product of being on essentially an allstar team or has benefitted greatly because of a particular player on their team?" and decided the risk wasn't worth it. I am not questioning their individual skill, just that their draft ranking could be inflated.

It will be interesting to look at this draft again in 5 years, especially with all of those teammates taken in the 1st.

I am happy with the Broberg pick, but I am hoping for a lot of forwards in the rest of the draft.

He was great against peers at the Hlinka and U18s. Playing against men in Sweden it's always hard to tell.

I believe the other fact IIRC he can play OHL (Hamilton) or go right to Bakersfield. I bet that was important for the Oilers

I actually went to a movie and got lucky that there was no service in the theater. Watched it on PVR without any spoilers, logged on to see a few pages of some absolute trash being posted and left.

Broberg was dominant against his age group and didn’t like bad against men. It’s possible he’s one of those players that would have been a second round steal 10 years ago.

Liking or disliking his play aside.

We drafted more of an organizational strength. If the rest of our draft picks aren't high skilled forwards I'm going to be very confused. Our forward prospects worth anything or with any potential are Benson, Yamamoto and Marody. Our defensive prospects are extremely high. Maybe we trade some of it and fix it. However with the high skilled forwards in abundance in the draft the fact we used a top 10 pick on Broberg is...questionable.

That said it sounds like no teams really wanted to trade and everyone just wanted their guy. Happened to Detroit too.

Hoping this isn't a case of trying to be smarter than everyone in the room

I don't pay enough attention to prospects, because they bust as often as they hit, but is NCAA hockey on par with junior in Canada talent wise or is that more like AHL?

Probably somewhere between Canadian junior and the AHL.

And probably more so due to physical maturity than skill.

Broberg is a good pick. If he kills it at camp, he can at in the American hockey league and learn the north American style game. His skating is up there with Jack Hughes in this draft. We gotta be patient and next thing you know, broberg and Bouchard will be our top two. :)

100% agree. I'm more interested in today and then free agency.

Yup. Our guy, Steve Staios, threw a hail mary pick at him in the middle of the last Import draft, so Hamilton has his rights.

Imo Turcotte and Hughes drove the team. Caufields goal scoring, doesn't matter who he had. The rest...yeah maybe Gagner syndrome.

Holland was asked if he might play in Bakersfield next year and he gave a very quick and firm no.

A bunch of those kids are going to bust hard.

Zegras was the most overrated of the bunch by a mile.

Loving the Broberg pick even more this morning. Especially if we nab Kaliyev, Lavoie, Legare, or Brink.

Good.

I personally like the Hamilton option, we can keep a close eye on him on him and he can play 25-30 mins a night in all situations. Work on the areas he needs to work on.

High character kid who is dedicated to his craft with that size and skillset are difficult to come by. His ceiling is as high as anyone in the draft after Hughes/Kakko.

Holland also seemed to like the Hamilton option. His reasoning is you get to play more games, be relied on heavier. Have a bad game? Gotta get back on the bus and okay again. In Sweden he would probably be a bottom or middle pairing guy, they don't play as much either. He would be playing against men but Holland doesn't seem to think that matters till later in the development either, playing time matters more. At least in Holland's mind
