2019 Draft: 1st Pick: Philip Broberg

People have seen Broberg skate right? I'm leery too but man this guy has McDavid like boots and is 6'3 and competitive. It's pretty clear that his faults are puck skills at high speed and vision but i actually think this is something that should improve with age. Skills coaching and experience playing at such a high speed will possibly see him improve a great deal. He has Hall of Fame upside and has always been exceptional against his peer group, the players most of these kids are playing against. Worst case scenario is probably an elite shutdown guy. With his skating, size, peer performance there's merit in thinking he could be best player available. It's going to be really interesting to see if the USDTP guys have been getting overrated this whole time given the ideal circumstances they played in. Taking the top Swedish D and or player in a draft is probably a reasonable choice at 8 IMO, plus he's young for the draft still being 18. Klefbom, Nurse, Samorukov, Broberg, Jones, Lagesson is an awful lot of good young lefties to bring along and fit in over the next 3-4 years.

I dont get why we have 29 pages of angry fans posting as if the pick came as a surprise. Literally every credible Oilers insider has been posting for days that Broberg is a likely pick.

Oiler scouts has been convinced he's a reasonable pick at 8th, if he's 8th most valuable prospect on your list you pick him at 8th andd be happy.

Broberg was 14-15 consensus. Thats 6-7 spots up. Yes, thats value that could have been squeezed... maybe... its subjective ranking. Caufield was consensus 8ish, does that mean the scouting groups on 7 teams were just plain bad not to select him? Sometimes consensus and teams scouts do not align

I've heard that he can play the right side, is that true?

Yes. He doesnt see it as a problem. He has played 50/50 depending on what his partner at the time has prefered. Thats his answer from the interviews anyway

Sigh. For those of us not wanting to pay for pay wall what does it state.

One way i have been looking at this pick is this: if you could add another superstar to the Oilers, what position would he play? (I think we would agree goalie, but we were never taking a goalie at #8).

I would say, if we could add another gamebreaker, it would be best for us to add to the backend. We need supplemental pieces up front, but we still dont have a solid #1 or even #2 at the back .

We probably could have moved back a few spots, but overall, especially with the knowledge that we got Lavoie in the 2nd round, i am happy with the pick

Here's to hoping he's like OEL/Klingberg V2 and he'll be a second rock on the backend along with Bouchard.

He reminds me a lot of Roman Josi actually. Fluid puck transporting dman.

I really really wanted Zegras but at this point what's done is done and we can't change it. So take it in stride and cheer on your new prospect.

There's gamebreaker potential here, lets hope he can achieve it.

The bolded part seems like the worst part about the pick, that it was almost set in stone for everyone to know that they were taking Broberg.

It may not seem like the end of the world, but that's just something worrisome in my eyes

Slept on the pick and I like it a lot more

A huge amount of upside here, and getting imo a mid-late first round quality prospect in Lavoie made the sting of not taking a forward a lot better. Compounded with the fact that he seems to be ok with playing either side. This pick makes a lot more sense from an organizational need standpoint.

As for an BPA standpoint, Holland and Gretzky believed that Broberg was the BPA and I'm willing to accept that. I thought Zegras was the BPA, but hey, I was also thought Yakupov and Pulju were the BPA in their repsective drafts, and preferred Bennett over Draisaitl

That sounds extremely dumb and North American centric. Why would he develop better playing with and against teenagers than playing with one the most succesful Swedish team the past decade and against men?

Adam Larsson logged tough minutes as a 17-year old at the same team. If he's good enough he will play many minutes this upcoing season.
He'd likely get a lot more ice time and a bigger offensive role playing in the OHL.

I also strongly prefer him to play in the OHL ala Boqvist from last year

I agree in that it's not always the best idea to show your hand too early. Maybe we missed trades because there was less urgency to trade up.

At the same time, I also much prefer the more transparent Oilers since the signing of Holland

Well at least you know this isn’t like Puljujarvi where they drafted a Euro player that they knew very little about.

How do you know it won't happen? Are you the player?
Seeing that he signed a SHL contract a couple of weeks ago, I would be completely flabbergasted if he would suddenly go from playing in a pro men's league to amateur junior hockey. It would be downright Pejorative Slured.

I don't know what the transfer agreement between the SHL and the NHL looks like in specifics, but I don't think a NHL team have the rights to decide where a drafted player is going to play without having a contract with that player.
Pretty obvious that school has never been a priority for any of the top prospects.

Which is why holland stated that he would discuss it with broberg first, we're only speculating on this because he said that he preferred broberg to have a large role with his team next season. Presumably, nothing goes through without the permission of broberg and his SHL team first

Or maybe English is his second language?

Yeah well, I doubt he will play in the OHL next season.

You are being taught English from first grade through twelfth in Sweden. It's most likely that he dropped out or missed most of his classes in eleventh grade to focus on hockey though.

I know people are going to be mad at me for this comment, but...

When this pick was made, it reminded me of when the Oilers took Steve Kelly because he was so fast.
