I think it's a good idea...
He gets more minutes, and plays on the smaller ice surface.
He'd likely get a lot more ice time and a bigger offensive role playing in the OHL.
I also strongly prefer him to play in the OHL ala Boqvist from last year
I know people are going to be mad at me for this comment, but...
When this pick was made, it reminded me of when the Oilers took Steve Kelly because he was so fast.
If you do a page count again, I think it's less than 29 pages. I spewed about a page worth of comments regarding why this was an awesome pick so maybe 28 pages?I dont get why we have 29 pages of angry fans posting as if the pick came as a surprise. Literally every credible Oilers insider has been posting for days that Broberg is a likely pick.
Oiler scouts has been convinced he's a reasonable pick at 8th, if he's 8th most valuable prospect on your list you pick him at 8th andd be happy.
Broberg was 14-15 consensus. Thats 6-7 spots up. Yes, thats value that could have been squeezed... maybe... its subjective ranking. Caufield was consensus 8ish, does that mean the scouting groups on 7 teams were just plain bad not to select him? Sometimes consensus and teams scouts do not align
What a stupid post.I thought Zegras would have been the obvious choice.
What a stupid pick.
To be fair, if Steve Kelly was drafted in today's NHL he would probably put up 50 points a year on a second line somewhere.
His hands weren't good enough for that even in today's NHL.
His hands were fine; he just had no ability to push through physical contact and get open.
If you want someone who was all speed with no hands, that's Rico Fata.
I watched him live and his hands were crap. All speed and no hands.
When did Chia do that?Holland will just blame current scouting staff ala Chia and Reinhart
Zero regular season gamesI didn't consider Makar a prospect.
I'm going to apologize for all the vilitrol I posted about this player the other day. Pretty pathetic. Kids an Oiler and I'm going to express the good points in his game and cheer him on to improve and become the best player we can be. I'll post my thoughts about him in a positive manner with constructive criticism instead of negativity.
- Kids an extremely fast skater. His edgework could use some work but he gets up to speed very quick and puts defenders on their heels
- He has a hard slap and wrist shot. Needs to work on accuracy and release but the power is there
- He uses his speed well to get back defensively
- Plays a very clean game. Reminiscent of Klefbom. Doesn't use his body to hit or get agressive much, rather he uses his stickwork to get there.
- His defensive positioning is...relatively poor however his skating often can cover for it. When playing against adults in Sweden it was more exposed however against his age group the speed more than made up for it
- the knock I've heard most about him is that he doesn't really learn from mistakes too well. Tends to make the same mistakes multiple times and doesn't really correct fast. That said he is relatively new to playing defense and a lot of that could be coaching. I don't know a lot about how coach this year but it's possible that he didn't work with him or give him great direction to improve. Under the right direction I feel like he could correct.
- With him being a center till 4 years ago his offensive instincts are still good and he isn't afraid to join the rush or crash the net which can create chaos for opposing teams as he acts like a 4th forward at times but has the speed to get back defensively.
I believe with good coaching and lots of hard work, if he is able to start to learn from his mistakes and improve his defensive position he could be a very good second pairing defender in the NHL. Development can be wild and all over the place so he could sky rocket that as well. Hell if he has the se jump in ability Samorukov had he could be a #1 for sure from his elite skating alone.
I think he takes 2 more years overseas or Junior here. After that I believe he goes to Bakersfield until he is ready to breakout into the NHL.
I said that all along. Shortsighted fans are the ones crying about this pick. 5 years later, if someone offered one of Dach, Zegras, or Cozens for Broberg, you'll laugh hard. It's the same as us trying to unload RNH for Seth Jones. RNH wouldn't net the likes of Seth Jones or Werenski. Probably have to throw in a 1st or something.I personally would have preferred Zegras but I’m not against Broberg. With the amount of Defence taken after calmed my nerves a lot about the pick. I also maybe got caught up in the mob mentality about being against the pick but after watching highlights (both good and bad) about him, I’m cool with the pick at number 8. A good Defenseman does have more value then a winger.
Whatever you're trying to compare won't work.Watching some more games and highlights of Broberg today. Some quick thoughts:
- I think he's a better skater than Nurse
- not nearly as physical as Nurse, but he has better offensive sense with the puck
- puck skills are about the same as Nurse
- defensively ... could use some work there
If it comes together he has Jay Bouwmeester upside IMO, but he's more assertive and dynamic with the puck than Bouwmeester was.
(The reason I'm comparing him to Nurse is because they're picked in a similar range in the draft with similar question marks surrounding their all-around ability and puck skills).
If Broberg went 6 then we would've taken Zegras. 100pI'm a bit curious. Let's said the Red Wings took Broberg instead. Then we grab Moritz Seider with our 8th pick. What would happen here? Do we jump for joy because Seider was "supposed" to go 6th overall? Or do we see a lineup at the cliff where fans are racing to jump off?
I think the bigger question mark is did Yzerman outsmart everyone by picking Seider. If that was who he was targeting, wouldn't it be better for the Wings to trade down to the 15th pick and accumulate more assets?
