2019 Draft: 1st Pick: Philip Broberg

Brian Lawton said in NHL Tonight that he saw Arizona main list and their pick (Soderstrom) was #5 and that’s the reason they moved up. Most likely they tried to move even higher but nobody bite. For me this comment tells how different team’s lists might be than those combined lists are.
They all m(media)h seen Oilers list..Broberg must have been #3 on it.
Let's be happy that we didn't trade up to get him.
We will find out in 3 yrs if we took the right player or not.

Ever since the Yak pick I try not to pay attention. I am still in shock at how he panned out.

Put together some random clips from two shift-by-shift videos on Broberg for those who are unfamiliar of his game.

Broberg is number #70.

There is not really any rhyme or reason to these clips, just trying to show some of the good and some of the bad of Broberg's game, but I didn't go out of my way to find the best or worst sequences or anything like that at all. Just took what I could find, being as lazy as possible. Might make another one later if I can be bothered.

One thing that stood out to me in those clips was his speed. I obviously knew he was fast, but his skating looked otherworldly at times there. The way he was able to beat players cleanly to the outside with his long stride was impressive. There were some nice passes and he showed some creativity, but also made some bad decisions. Hopefully he can improve on that.

I'm thinking maybe the OHL route would be best for him. Broberg has nearly identical stats to Boqvist last year, both international and league play, and the OHL path is looking like a smart move for Boqvist. Also, the Hamilton Bulldogs own his rights, the same team that has Arthur Kaliyev. It would be awesome if we can snag him at 38.

I've got a pretty good feeling about Broberg. Swedish defensemen drafted in the top-10 literally always pan out.

Dude has wheels ill give him that. We can never have too many d prospects. I think he will turn out to be a good pick

Well.

I see this whole situation as similarly bad to when Chiarelli came into Edmonton. Chiarelli botched an extremely important pick his first year and now Holland follows suit.

Instead of just taking the BPA or an organizational need the new GM goes daft and makes a stupid move. Leaks his stupidity to boot in an attempt sway fans and media. Pathetically bad.

Maybe behind the scenes this is a pick that the scouts are behind 110% but from the little I've read it sounds like Holland likes the player, seen him good in a tourney, compared him to Nicklas Lidstrom... and pushed everyone else out of the conversation. A message to everyone he is the boss. At the expense of a much needed forward prospect.

Now there is immense pressure on Holland to find forwards. Immense pressure on the prospect to succeed way above his projections. Just a terrible terrible pick. At the worst trade down to 20 or whatever this kid would have actually gone and pick it another asset.
Broberg is long gone by pick 20. I would have preferred a forward as well, but if you think he has top pairing potential you take him. He went a few picks ahead of where most had projected him, but much of this post is overly dramatic Lol

I don't get the Left side though, is it the end for Nurse in Edm?

Nurse/Kelfbom/Sekera/Jones/Samorukov and now Broberg ?
Klefbom will be a UFA by the time Broberg is NHL ready..
This pick changes nothing for this years Oilers

Righties are fewer and harder to come by which adds to the value of rhd, bowen byram the top defencemen in this yrs draft is a lhd also

The only way they don't take Broberg is if Dach, Turcotte or Cozens fell to 8. I like Zegras a lot, he seems like a similar player to RNH but I think him being American and going to college might have scared the scouts from picking him.

And when exactly do you think this 17-year old defenseman is going to play in the NHL then?

Three or four years.

If he comes to the OHL next season, I see two years there and one year in the AHL.

If he stays in Europe next year he could still do his two years in the OHL and then a one year apprenticeship in AHL.

Three or four years. Like Oscar.

Man some of his highlight packs are sick. But Im sure its just a snapshot of his year, Likes to carry the puck behind the net like Nurse. Needs to work on creating something off a lot of these rushes.

Nurse plays a power game, he is sticking around for sure. It will be Klef on the way out but you would think that's at least a year away unless Lagesson or Jones turn out to be a 20:00 a night guy.

Full season in Sweden this coming season, full season in the AHL with a brief look and then a split between the year after. This is what the draft should be about, not for someone who’s going to save our team this coming season.
