Hanzal was a good player. Got derailed by injuries. Fletcher was under intense win at all costs pressure from the owner.

Getzlaf is better than Hanzal & not a pending UFA.

Man, it’s nothing personal - believe you me but I disagree.

Team is not in a position to waste assets to chase the playoffs, and what’s likely a first round exit anyway. I’ve enjoyed them playing better, and the injuries are still a factor but they are still a bubble team.

It’s a belief I have, that you don’t waste assets to get bubble teams into the dance. I won’t pretend I’ve seen a lot of Anaheim this year (or last), but can’t support trading for a 34year old in the twilight of his career.

The team needs to realize the missing centerman is likely either Patrick or Frost. You dont waste assets because there isn’t enough patience. If it comes out that neither one of those guys have that ability, then fine - but it’s smart to wait imo.

So Getzlaf if having worse seasons than Voracek the last 1.5 years...yet some say he is worth a ham sandwich. So is Getzlaf worth a half of one....if cut diagonally?

Pageau probably not because he’s a pending UFA & I don’t see him passing up on the open market as a C. I don’t think you want to trade Ghost for a two month rental.

Duclair I doubt, as they’re going to prefer a C so G can go back to W, plus Duclair has bounced around a ton, is inconsistent, & has a poor track record of coachability.

got it, im just throwing out names, who do you think we should get?

Getzlaf is a ham sandwich where the bread is made of spiderwebs who adds a ton of cap inefficiency. Seriously; we are against the cap, swapping a young cap-efficient player for someone with questionable utility even at 4.1 mil is not a recipe for team-building success. That's how you end up having to trade away a good asset to fix the hole you've made on defense.

Hockey Central on burning that 1st year on a contract for a rookie(talking about Sandin):

"It's now become better to burn that 1st year off early so that a player only has 2 years to accrue numbers vs that 3rd year. All because players are now looking to sign longer RFA deals on the 2nd contract now. So that burning of the 1st year doesn't matter much anymore."

Yup...trade Ghost for a forward...so then we can trade something else for a Dman.

Or, we could just play Frost. And if hell bent on keeping Frost in the AHL this season, make a lesser trade and keep the D depth. We just had Braun and Ghost out on top of Morin gone all season. To willingly lessen our defense depth just makes no sense.

Option C.
Well the ED is a deadline we have to deal with. And it seems clear they are going with Provy/Sanheim/Myers. So a decision will have to be done.

But I would rather trade Ghost for assets....and lose JVR in ED. And that is 1 issue if you trade Ghost for a forward that needs protecting....it means possibly exposing Lindblom. And I am not sure how that situation is going to be handled regardless.

Why are you hell bent on adding an expensive C with term? It makes no sense with Frost and hopefully Patrick back for next year.
Their depth has been crushed by injuries to Lindblom & Patrick.

They need another stud forward, & center is the best position to make a major two-way impact, plus allow G to go back to W.

Getzlaf & Carter’s contracts expire after next season, so you aren’t stuck with them forever (though you might be able to extend them cheaply if they’re still playing well & want to stay here).

Morgan Frost in 2020 isn’t anywhere close to the 2-way impact player Getzlaf & Carter are. Are we writing off competing in the last prime years of Giroux & Voracek or not?

I'm not saying what I expect, I'm saying what should still be on the table.

1) those three protections shouldn't be a done decision, Myers shouldn't be a lock

2) depending on price, it may be our best option to incentivize Seattle to pick someone other than Ghost.

I'm not saying either of these are he correct decisions. All I'm saying is nothing should be decided just yet. Especially since trading him for assets is likely to be a huge disappointment thanks to 1) Fletcher being a trash GM, and 2) Fletcher and the coaches doing everything in their power to lower his trade value.

We aren't anywhere close enough to serious Cup contention to sacrifice the present and future capabilities of our D group by swapping a cap efficient player for declining guys who are either close to retirement, or who will retire if traded. That's a move you make only if adding that guy, even with the loss of Ghost, could win you a Cup.

That's not our position. It looks like a move one makes just to get rid of a player they dislike whatever the cost or logic.

Jeff Carter....the guy who has paced for 36 points the last 1.5 years is no longer a stud.

Maybe we could add to the team...without paying someone 5-8 million?

Carter....stud at a 36 point pace...30 point ES pace.....you willing to trade Ghost for him
Frost....poopoo at a 32 point pace....27 point ES pace....he comes free

Impartial? Hmmmm.

2020....cool...you can see the future? Is Patrick still hurt?

Funny think is...I have mentioned Tierney as a "settlement"....or a "middleground".

He buys us time if they are dead set on not bringing up Frost.
He is cheaper to acquire.
He makes 2.9 million so could get him by trading our Raffl or Laughton if they retain
He is a RFA so is not a rental
He gives us a backup option if Patrick doesn't recover
If Patrick does recover, you can recoup picks spent to add him
Or do you keep him and move out a JVR to keep the C depth in tact and move Hayes to wing
Oh...and unlike Carter and his 36 point pace, he is on a 46 point pace the last 1.5 years. And had a 40 point season the year before that. So safe to say, he is a 40 point guy.

With him....you have options. It's not "just" a short term add if you don't want it to be. It's not a long term either. Team flexibility. And if you did want to re-sign him, he essentially gets some of the money that was expected to go to Patrick or Lindblom that they will no longer get.
