Did some digging and found some defenseman who have the most similar usage (Quality of Competition) to Hagg this season. Criteria for comparison: at least 400 TOI at 5v5 with at least 40% of their total 5v5 TOI facing bottom 6 FWD competition (Gritensity FWDS). Quality of Competition explainer is linked here: Woodblog: WoodMoney: A new way to figure out quality of competition in order to analyze NHL data

There are 29 defenseman who fit this bill (Hagg included). Looking at their isolated shot attempt generation & suppression impacts by using HockeyViz, lets take a look at these defenseman in comparison to Hagg:

was he mr. " zero offensive skill" cooter hater ?

hahaa
One of them.

Here's a handful of posts from him. There's more but I got bored of copy/pasting.

i really cannot stand the couturier cult anymore. he's never eclipsed 40 points, he has 17 points in 43 games. he is not a second line center. it's a huge whole in the flyers lineup especially with giroux looking more and more like a 1b kind of center. I watch games, I see the defensive plays. I also see 0 offensive skill set, poor decisions with the puck and the inability to finish. enough, i don't need a calculation to tell me he's a second line center it's right in front of everyone's faces. we've been told for three years the offense is coming, and there's always an excuse. i'm not comfortable slotting in a player as the future second line center who's never even broken 40 points and who's looked like he's gotten worse this season, i don't give a **** that his line dominated a bad vancouver team one game. He's not untouchable. I can't stand how many fans throw Schenn under the bus, i don't care what pp he plays on, when he has his chances he SCORES. couturier does not, if he was on the first PP id guarantee he'd have half the goals schenn has and i'm low balling that. his speed has not improved and his offense has not improved, but hey his GFPR60Corsi%%% is great so he's the future of the second line.

Couturier is great defensively lack in some finish and a little soft for my liking.

i'm sorry but Sean Couturier is awful and has taken steps backwards, please don't respond with stats from a game against the sabres

the couturier apologist never seem to stop. he's had an awful year. and offense isn't his game cmon i'm really sick of it

no, my gripe is he's never eclipsed 40 points. he's soft on the puck like we saw tonight. he makes poor decisions with it constantly. and yeah maybe a top ten pick who scored over 100pts in the Q was expected to be able to produce. he's been a huge disappointment this season and he's going to get paid like a 50/60pt guy. and everyone here has every excuse for him under the sun, he flat out hasn't been good. you can call it even strength points or point to what ever graph you want he's underwhelming.

Dougie Hamilton a defensmen has ten less points in his career than Sean Couturier. Couturier has played roughly 60 more games than him. I still hate the pick

yeah he plays some good defense too, he's 6'5 if i'm not mistaken and is a right handed shot, in my opinion it was a terrible choice in 2011

[From a thread called "RNH to any team"]
couturier

[In a thread called "Players who look good stats-wise but are bad?"]
advanced stats wise, sean couturier

I was a big Jason Akeson fan...

I really wanted to like him and hoped he's put it together, but he was pretty much strictly a playmaker, the coaches didn't seem sure of what to do with him, and he wasn't exactly a good enough playmaker to make it.

He always felt like someone who was really close but not quite there.

*Only Keith Yandle and Anthony Bitetto have worse individual shot suppression impact at 5v5 than Hagg in this decent sample of players*

*Hagg has the worst gross (I.e. overall) individual shot generation and shot suppression impact among his peers who play similar minutes vs very similar competition*

“What do you expect, he’s a 7th defenseman” isn’t really a valid POV when examining all of this info I just shared*

*I’d take most any other defenseman in this group over Hagg*

*Hagg is terrible suppressor/generator of shot attempts, still is bad at that, and has been bad in the past at this*

Yeah, so when I point out that Hagg is in strong contention for worst dman in the league (even for bottom pairing guys) it's only because he is.

Haha yep. Bitetto essentially waves the white flag when the opposition wants to take a shot anywhere in the slot.

I think it's fascinating that Engelland has one specific shooting lane that he just doesn't cover. What even causes that thing to happen?

I get an area that you aren't strong in, but a specified lane is weird.

TSN is reporting that Dubas is on the lookout for a right-side defenseman with term.

That strikes Ghost off the Leafs list unless Dubas thinks he would be fine as a right side D.

Sounds like they're using Rielly's LTIR cap space for Barrie's replacement.

In that case Ghost would make sense for them.

I opened this thread and scrolled halfway down this page and then I put a bullet through my monitor.

What an ignorant comment. They’re heat maps that a poster took ample time to gather. It’s digestible information to peruse. Nothing more. If you don’t like what they show, then argue against them. If you don’t care what they show, then spare us the pointless snide remarks. I’m sure your precious index finger can manage to scroll down without falling off.

There is too much smoke out there for Ghost to not be on the block. I do see him being the d-man out once the expansion draft occurs so listening to offers wouldn't be a bad idea but they shouldn't trade him unless it is an obvious over payment. With the amount of high end contracts on the Leafs I could see them over paying in a trade for Ghost because he has a great contract with term.

**I don't want Ghost traded, just talking**

With my luck, he would get traded to the leafs and excel, then they would light it up and win (a series), and my local buddies would never let me hear the end of it.

I like Ghost though, but for the right piece..

Is Hagg good?

Nope. Only his on-ice save% at 5v5 (& also his 5v5 GA/60) say things are going well with him on-ice...& those two stats go hand-in-hand. He's not making as many glaringly obvious mistakes as last season. Still doesn't mean he's actually playing well though. Flyers are still getting buried mercilessly with him on the ice.

Even-Strength RAPM Among those 29 Defenseman that I previously mentioned:
xGF/60: 3rd worst
CF/60: 3rd worst
xGA/60: 20th
CA/60: 2nd worst

Still very much interested in trading him for a Ed Van Impe rookie card.
