We saw Doughty slip dramatically this past season. We have seen Kopitar slip every other season for five or six years. These guys are on the wrong side of 30, and neither one of them are known as workout champs.

Barzal isn't coming here. There is no Barzal.

I think the main thing that slipped was Doughtys give a shit level.

Doughty hasn't been good for awhile. He didn't just start slipping last season. He's become a very dopey mistake-prone player. Falling down, losing his stick, whiffing on shots/passes, etc. We have to hope it's just because he has nothing to play for, and he'll start playing his A game again once the Kings actually have something to play for.

Kopitar works on his game and conditioning through the season and off season. He's very professional. A pro's pro.

I agree, to some extent. That's the mark of a true leader.
I’m sure that in the right situation he will bounceback significantly, however I completely agree that he should not be wearing an A on his chest. He would be better off focusing on his own game, rather than leadership for the wider group.

Is there anybody on the Kings that you actually like?

I love Jonathan Quick, guy has the heart of a lion.

I feel bad for Jeff Carter. He was the Kings best forward before he was injured with the Achilles cut.

I always felt Jake Muzzin was underrated.

Dustin Brown was a warrior when the Kings needed one, and worked hard to rejuvinate his game. He has squeezed every bit of talent he has out of himself, but the well is getting dry.

With big salary demands come big expectations, and Doughty has fallen extremely short of what is expected of him. Bottom line, Doughty is one of the guys who was expected to have learned something from guys like Mitchell, Regehr, Richards, Williams, etc. and become a leader. He has failed miserably in that respect.

Doughty would be snatched up and put on #1 D pairing right now by any GM in the NHL.
...and he would probably do very well for a few seasons on a contending team where he would get excited about playing and held accountable by other players of equal talent or with more experience.

So there really is nobody on the Kings you like, just a couple you used to like.

So, the only guy on the current roster you like is Quick? That's pretty rough.

I do agree that big salaries do have big expectations, but Kopitar seems to be living up to expectations. His percentage of the cap when he signed his previous contract was 12% and his cap hit this past season was 12%. His PPG this season is .89, which is identical to his career PPG.

Doughty is struggling to be on a down team I agree, but I don't think it is lack of care, I think it is him trying to do too much. Remember he has had a rotating cast of partners the past 2 seasons that ranged from rookies to less than stellar veterans in Forbort and Ryan. His overcompensation really takes him out of his game, I think once the team settles down we will see a return to form.

Doughty has:
2X Stanley Cups.
2X Olympic gold metals
1x Norris trophy
1x WJC gold
1x WC gold
1X Hot wife

67 million dollars earned

76 million more dollars coming his way.

Can we really expect him to be all that motivated when he's playing meaningless games most of the time?

I have hope he can return to form once there's actual stakes involved.

Watching the Kings playoff games on NBCSN these last few days, I still can't wrap my head around how the clowns on Sportsnet keep saying the Kings were the slowest team to win the cup in the last 10 years. They played fast and had no problem keeping up with the Hawks and they traded rush chances in both the 13' / 14' series. The entire 13' 2 OT game was fast paced as you'll see.

You guys are bewildered that @KINGS17 doesn't have a huge list of favorite players on the current team... all the while forgetting that we finished next to dead in the entire NHL the past 2 seasons.

Besides a handful of players like Vilardi or Petersen, the guys that will lead this team into the post season in the future aren't even playing on the team yet.

So you can only like players when you have a good team? Or only like good players? Seems weird, when i was younger, one of my favorite players was Dan Hinote. I guarantee you, if he was on one of your top lines you were never going to win anything.

Kings17 "favorite" players are MVP's on ELC's. The second someone is paid above $4mil or has a 28th birthday, Kings17 wants them traded.

No, the second the Kings are not contenders and someone around 30 wants 8 years and $88 million, I would prefer the player to get traded.

Jeff Carter's a good, sad example of how most careers actually wind down with a whimper, not a parade.

What a f***ing shame that he's never been able to really fully pull it all back together after a f***ing nothing game vs. jeff petry.

Agreed on all points otherwise, overwhelmingly. Quick cares more than any King I've ever seen. He's the Deadmarsh of goalies. I'm glad Petersen seems really mentally strong himself because him stepping into that void is like following Bob Miller into the booth. Muzzin took a beating from fans when he was arguably the best #2 d-man in the league--we were truly spoiled in that period. Brown, I was and still am upset that he got so much hate when his production dipped after the Pominville thing--but it was always clear how much he cared, just like quick. And Doughty...I don't even know what else to say at this point. He's become the primadonna he was always on the edge of being when he had the play to back it up. Have seen flashes of the play, and while I could act like some of the Karlsson fans and make a million excuses for him, it's just raw unacceptable for someone of his contract AND status. He's a role model whether he likes it or not and hopefully these last two seasons end up as just a footnote of a time the team sucked and so did he (relative to expectations of course because as doofy as he's been he's still a top-10 d-man).

Nobody can argue any if that.

I don't think Doughty's as far gone as people think, but he definitely has to take that second half of his career step that other players have which is re-evaluating how he approaches the game because he can't get away with just being young anymore. He's going to get slower, so he's going to have to be smarter. If he figures that out, he'll be back on track.

I’d add that I don’t hold Doughty’s leadership against him. Some guys just are not the right fit for that role, it’s not a slight on him. He cares, he clearly cares. He just needs a Matt Greene or similar to help get the best out of him from a leadership standpoint. The leadership needs of a contending team and a rebuilding team are very different. I think he’d probably have been much better the last couple of seasons if he wasn’t needed to be a leader and he could focus on himself 100%. However once the team starts moving forward he will be elite once more, I have no doubt.

I don't think he's gone at all, really. He's still capable of absolutely massive games and taking over on the level he once did. The problem is he's got the inconsistencies of 2010-2011 Doughty back in his game, where one night he's lazer focused (Matthew Tkachuk games, anyone) and another he's plodding all over the ice and it's VERY apparent when it's the case. Is it the team? The new kid? Age? You could tell in his skating that he was pushing harder to keep up, is it all the minutes? All of the above? He's gotta sort that out for him. He has all the tools to age as an elite d-man, Keith was incredibly effective until his late 30s, Drew needs to be as well. Would be an absolute shame if he fell off the map now when he's got game like late career Bourque.
