Hmmm. I think the uncertainty of the draft is a reason for why we would do this. Not why we shouldn't.
You also have an opportunity cost here. Kings have Kopitar and Doughty still playing at a very high level. Two players who have proven they can carry a team to Stanley cups. That is very rare. Kings also have a limited number of years where they will get cheap ELC production out of their current prospect pool. Given these two huge factors, it seems like our responsibility to go for it during this first window. 4 years from now Kopi might not be a Selke caliber player. Doughty might not be a #1 dman that can play half the game at an elite level. Those are hard spots to replace.
It seems like you are very worried about being on the losing side of the Value chart Barzal vs 4 unknown firsts. I'm not. I could see us winning or losing it depending on how it works out.
But a lineup of (put them together however you want)
Kopi-Kaliyev-Fagemo
Barzal-Turcotte-Kupari
Vilardi-Iafallo-Kempe
Thomas-Wagner-Prohorkin
Bjornfot-Doughty
Anderson-Drysdale
Walker-Roy
Petersen
Quick
That lineups looks ultra talented, young and competive.
That looks like a team that can win and do it soon. And if you can put a team that talented together then you do it.
Half your forwards don't have a lick of NHL experience. Your defensemen are very inexperienced too, save for Doughty.
I have several concerns with offer sheets. Losing value of picks is among the bottom, it's just the one I've explained least and was hoping would be more convincing.
Not all those prospects are ready. You'd be lucky to make the playoffs with that lineup. And this is someone who is a big fan of the prospects (as well as a staunch defender of Kopitar).
The Kings should be doing things systematically to reshape the roster while putting the prospects in the correct environments to develop and succeed. Pigeonholing them in the roster sets them up for failure and undoes the past few years of mediocrity.
