Hmmm. I think the uncertainty of the draft is a reason for why we would do this. Not why we shouldn't.

You also have an opportunity cost here. Kings have Kopitar and Doughty still playing at a very high level. Two players who have proven they can carry a team to Stanley cups. That is very rare. Kings also have a limited number of years where they will get cheap ELC production out of their current prospect pool. Given these two huge factors, it seems like our responsibility to go for it during this first window. 4 years from now Kopi might not be a Selke caliber player. Doughty might not be a #1 dman that can play half the game at an elite level. Those are hard spots to replace.

It seems like you are very worried about being on the losing side of the Value chart Barzal vs 4 unknown firsts. I'm not. I could see us winning or losing it depending on how it works out.
But a lineup of (put them together however you want)
Kopi-Kaliyev-Fagemo
Barzal-Turcotte-Kupari
Vilardi-Iafallo-Kempe
Thomas-Wagner-Prohorkin

Bjornfot-Doughty
Anderson-Drysdale
Walker-Roy

Petersen
Quick

That lineups looks ultra talented, young and competive.
That looks like a team that can win and do it soon. And if you can put a team that talented together then you do it.

Half your forwards don't have a lick of NHL experience. Your defensemen are very inexperienced too, save for Doughty.

I have several concerns with offer sheets. Losing value of picks is among the bottom, it's just the one I've explained least and was hoping would be more convincing.

Not all those prospects are ready. You'd be lucky to make the playoffs with that lineup. And this is someone who is a big fan of the prospects (as well as a staunch defender of Kopitar).

The Kings should be doing things systematically to reshape the roster while putting the prospects in the correct environments to develop and succeed. Pigeonholing them in the roster sets them up for failure and undoes the past few years of mediocrity.

Hypothetically.......2020 Draft ends June 27, Kings draft Drysdale. Barzal's 50m AAV offer sheet is signed July 1, Kings lose 4 first round pics in 2021, 22, 23, 24, 25 (Kings get to choose 4 of those years....not sure when or how?)...and are in cap hell forever :sarcasm:
We aren't in cap hell forever though. I was suggesting a 4 yr contract for Barzal. That would go perfectly in line with the incredibly cheap ELC contracts that fill up a large portion of our roster. So cap hell wouldn't be a thing at all.

This is a very real option for us. And given our cap space, the fact we hold our picks and the obvious appeal to both Barzal and NYI this has a high likelihood of being successful.

If you can get young star players that fit our cap structure you have to be at least willing to consider the option. Teams relying on analytics are starting to explore these options more frequently because the value of a Barzal often exceeds the value of 4 average firsts.

Given the obvious fit to our team and considering how drastic our talent level can increase on this team it's easy to understand how we could significantly improve where we now are in the standings.

There are plenty of upgrades within our organization to expect huge growth.

Our 1-2-3 Center punch would be ridiculous...
Kopi and Barzal is a nightmare 1-2 combom Vilardi is more than a 3C right now. Doughty is elite. Teams that have 3C's and an elite 1D rarely will miss the playoffs. The rest of the guys don't need to be stars. And many of them will exceed your 1st year expectations. When you get to play next to one of those Centers you are in a pretty good spot.

But I'm also looking at this over a 4 year period when I put that lineup together. Thats a cup window for us. Throughout that window some of these young players could be stars in the league.

It's just very simple to look at that Center depth, D core, Goaltending and envision a scary team.

Fast forward too many years without making significant additions and all of a sudden your hoping that you find a Doughty and Kopi replacement via the 21-25 drafts. And realistically you aren't going to do that.

It makes sense to me to lose 4 firsts. But add Barzal, and take advantage of a few more Selke/Norris Doughty and Kopi years.

I think you would be much better off paying overs for the best FA available but the paying overs part allowing us to dictate the contract term to suit the upcoming ELC lengths. Then you can use the 4 first rounders to package with B prospects and trade for players to fill the spots you need. 4 first rounders can get you a decent return from bad teams with good players who are just wasting away.

How crazy would it be to throw a big offersheet at Barzal this off-season. Say you offer like 12.5 Mil AAV for four years. It would cost us the next 4 1sts (But not until 2021 draft). We would have already added quite a few legit prospects to the best prospect pool in the league. Our cupboards would be full. We'd be banking on the picks we give up being mediocre firsts.

But I could see us competing for a playoff spot next year with a few roster changes and a youth infusion.

We will have plenty of cap space for the next three to five years, with all of the ELCs we will have.

It would be real hard for Barzal to turn that down and NYI to match.

I'll take things that will never happen for $1000 Alex.

We aren't at the point where we can offer sheet anyone. It's 2 years too soon for that.

We first need to see if any of our blue chippers pan out. If they do, that's 4 1st round picks saved. Picks we can use for other holes. There are no short cuts here. We have to do this right or else the horror years of the early 00s will come again.

If we’re offer sheeting anyone, I’d target Sergachev.

Tampa bay currently has 76,166,666 committed to 15 players next season. Notable RFAs include Sergachev, Cernak (lol), and Cirelli. If the cap was raised to $84 million, Tampa would only have $7.8 million in cap space. Tampa can only be 10% over the cap during the offseason. Very intriguing

Sergachev is a complimentary piece on a very good team. Barzal is 22 and has been the leading scorer on a good team for three seasons. Barzal outscored a 27 yr old John Tavares (Tavares had his third best point total of his entire career when Barzal outscored him) and Barzal was 19 yrs old to start that season. Tavares then got 11 mil for 7 yrs from Toronto.

Wow TBL has their off-season work cut out for them. Shattenkirk only had a one year deal as well, so his paycheck will go up if they want to retain him too. I see some big trades in the future for them.

There’s going be several teams that will struggle if the cap doesn’t go up. Lots of good opportunities for Blake to take on salaries for picks and/or prospects.

Hope Blake and Co are looking at the TBL like a fat kid looks at cake! They need to shed salary and we could use scoring..

You would assume Tampa would look to move Killorn or Palat. Both have NTC’a that kick in this and next July.

Killorn: CLAUSE DETAILS: Starting July 1, 2020: Player submits a 16 team no trade list.

Palat: CLAUSE DETAILS: Starting July 1, 2021: Player submits a 20 team trade list.

Compliance buyouts could be a huge opportunity out of left field which the Kings could greatly make use of to get terrible contracts off the books.

Being able to buyout Carter and Quick this summer with zero cap penalties would be manna from heaven. With Quick, you can try to resign him for a better contract. No way Carter should be taking ice time from any prospects.

Would that even be necessary? You don't just throw in 3 lines of prospects. They don't need cap space or a roster spot to buyout Carter or Quick.

Buyouts would be coming far too late for the Kings. They don't need the space at this point. All this would do is help those that are contenders.

An advantage the Kings have coming out of a rebuild, eventually, is cap space. I'd prefer those that are f***ed to remain f***ed or to at least consult with DL before deciding whether they should use a compliance buyout.

If you are looking to compliance buy someone out and re-sign them, I'd look at Doughty. A buy out this summer would lose doughty roughly 22 mil, but you resign him for 5 years at about 5 mil he makes more money, he's getting checks for the next 14 years, and it saves 5+ mil on our cap for the next 7 years. I don't think the league lets it fly but it would be nice

Pretty sure you're not allowed to do that.
