A little bit tangential but illustrative of how he gets abused, Kopitar played more than any San Jose shark and anyone in the game last night except Drew Doughty's 28+ minutes, coming in at 26:13

Remember when I said he was playing #1 d-man minutes? That's absolutely absurd, haha.

If it takes 24+ minutes of TOI for Kopitar and Doughty to become consistent multi point per game players, so be it.

It’s not like there are better players to give those minutes to, plus these guys are still stars and paid like superstars.

In the big picture, getting those two to shed the “everyone just has to be good, so no one has to be great” culture will help get the franchise out of this ditch.

Ideally you’d like to see those minutes distributed more evenly for the sake of prospect development. But it sort of doesn’t matter until a true blue chipper arrives on the nhl roster.

Plus there are still opportunities to play kids over guys like Carter, et. al. And like with Martinez going down last night, opportunities will open up with injuries.

Which is also a good point for Doughty and Kopi. Both guys are iron men.

Idiot commentary.. Hey guys lets run our two best players into the ground because well.. all of you suck!
News flash, everyone does have to be good at their roles if not they're useless.. That's been the point for a few seasons now.. We lack depth, talent and until recently the pipeline to field a competitive team..
Kopitar is pretty much a one man line, need proof look at any stat or metric you want. Want more proof, look at the c/c+ level talent he's played with and how they improve their stats playing with him..

How about Kovalchuk with half his salary retained plus Toffolli (maybe some salary retained) for Turris at 4m per year plus picks and prospects.
Preds get much needed firepower and rid themselves off Turris and still have cap space to spend at the deadline.
I could also see Kempe worked into that. I think a change of scenery would benefit him and Poile would like a little more long term value in the deal.
Please tell me you’re joking? That’s horrible for all sorts of reasons.

If Kopitar and Doughty could produce to their expectations with less minutes that would be great. Seems like the coaches have abandoned that theory.

If the FO had actually done their job right we wouldn't be in this situation..
Take this season, we all know we suck and arent making the playoffs.. so why TF not give kids even more time and have everyone hover around the 14-16TOI.. Zero reason for Doughty and Kopitar to be playing as much as they are.. Amadio, Porky, Grundy and Wags should all be getting more TOI so they can experience all game situations

sounds like a good way to piss of Kopitar and Drew. Plus being blown out every game would be way more demoralizing than being in every game even if the kings lose.

We agree on strategy, but it has failed to materialize for 3 coaches in a row. Here’s my vote for a PP1 which should happen, but never will because of reasons to do with contracts.

Grundstrom Lizotte Luff
Kempe Walker

I also think that if the Kings vets got more minutes against the opponents weaker lines, the teams overall production would increase.

With Martinez injury it makes me worried Toffoli could go down. If any team is offering a 2nd + right now I want Blake to take it.

I just realised how good Kopi’s numbers at the dot are: 243/190 (56.1%). He really is proving to be excellent all over.

I really would love to see him with an effective winger offensively. If Kempe keeps building his game maybe he gets a shot? It’s got to be worthy of consideration given mostly everyone else has had a go.

Forbort must be close to coming in, especially if AMart misses time. You’d have to think Roy gets waived if he does. Forbort would improve the group we have but I’m very intrigued how TM integrates him. It’ll be interesting to see if he goes back to the player of a couple of years back as I’ve seen some suggestion his back has been an issue for a while. I’m just hoping he can play well enough to garner some TDL interest.

Who says it'll be a blow out every game?
Carter is looking good 1.5 years after his injury, Amadio, Porky and Cliffy should get more time and Kempe-Lizotte are showing chemistry .. so yes, they should play more and with a fresher, healthier Kopitar and Doughty the expected results should be better.

...or some of the younger guys might surprise us, the coaches and themselves and step up.

Fear of being embarrassed can be a strong motivator, and every young player should learn from making mistakes. If you identify a player who isn't learning from their mistakes, it's probably time to move that player. I am not talking about destroying the confidence of 19-21 year olds here, but all of the young forwards on the roster (I dunno five or six of them) are 22-24 years of age. Surely, 3-4 minutes of Kopitar's ice time can be distributed among those players. Give the lion's share of it to the one or two players having a good game.

Even if the result is slightly worse, does it matter?

Just means we have a better chance at a higher pick.. No need to baby the younger players we have now.. Other than Lizzotte, all the other younger guys have put up points in the A and have looked dominant there.. Their time is now and they should get the PT to reflect that.. As you said, it doesnt matter they'll be better for it.

I looked this up...Oh crap, it was so close to being a really serious problem. Glad he's gonna be ok.

I have no idea, but I’m hoping the fact the nerves are ‘superficial’ that it means it’s likely to be only a touch of sensation that’s affected, as opposed to any gross motor skills.

Kopitar has been very good for the last little while here. When you see him make plays like he did on the first shift last night when he stickhandled into the O-zone before that collision with the ref, you know you are getting the Kopitar that those who criticize him--even mildly--are talking about when they say they get frustrated at times.

When he plays with confidence, his offensive game really seems to go up a level.

I saw a really bad injury once in the old WHA. A couple of opposing players fell awkwardly into the boards. One guy jumped up the other guy got up and threw his gloves down. Immediately one of the opposing players (not the guy who jumped up originally) threw his gloves down and headed straight the player who first threw his gloves down. Everyone thought we were about to see a fight.

What we couldn't see right away was the arm of the jersey on the first guy was red. The opposing player who threw his gloves down clamped both of his hands down around the first player's wrist and they started skating toward the exit behind one of the nets. The trainer followed as quickly as he could, and the PA put out a call for the team doctor to go immediately to the dressing room. There was a trail of blood going off the ice.

The next day in the newspaper they reported the injured player and the one who helped him get off the ice were teammates in juniors in Medicine Hat. The injured player made a full recovery and played a full season for the Colorado Rockies, and parts of two seasons with the Flyers. The team physician said his former teammate may have saved his life.

Well, our defense just got worse, as improbable as that seems.

Not to be insentitive, but thats the suicide cut.. Just think, Marty was going balls out and even dove to make a play = his heart was pumping pretty hard. A deeper cut or worse and he would have been in big trouble...
