Duhatschek Notebook: Why the Flames shouldn’t trade...

Hypothetically, if you are the Predators, would you consider trading Kyle Turris for Ilya Kovalchuk? And before the collective heads explode in Predator Nation, hear me out.

It wouldn’t be because you necessarily think Kovalchuk’s addition answers any questions, though he might. But at some point, if you have to move Turris’s contract before the start of next year, when Roman Josi’s new deal kicks in, to manage your salary-cap, can you get him off the books by taking on Kovalchuk?

What kind of bullshit is this!? Turris is signed for another FOUR MORE YEARS after this season, and the dude has been done like 2-3 seasons ago. Unless he's coming with a 1st round pick and a 2nd rounder this is absolute hogwash.

We can't even get rid of Carter, Kovy, or Quick and we're saddled with Brown. Hell we just bought out Phaneuf!

I've no issue with Brown and hope managementkeeps him..Since were rebuilding the next few years, Carters contract doesnt even bother me.Quicks contract does.

The camera is low and Carter is standing a little bit closer to the camera (his shoulder is in front of Kopitar's). This makes him appear taller compared to the others.
I don't believe it. Carter is actually the same height as Zdeno Chara.

Who is Brooklyn?

She was in charge of LA Kings in arena production and some other stuff. I know she was in charge of promotions because I remember her lashing out at season ticket holders who were complaining. She had a tweet that amounted to "your ticket only entitles you to the hockey game" towards the end of last year and it seemed like poor timing with the on ice performance.

6 games ago, pre-Kovalchuk drama, the Kings were 30th in points%. After currently going 4-2 in 6 Kovalchukless games, the Kings are still 30th in points%. For anyone that lives or dies with a win here and there during a tank season. 8 points in 6 games is 109 over 82, and they haven't moved a muscle in the standings.

However, if they get 8 points every 6 games for the rest of the season, that would be 79 points in the remaining 59 games, giving them 98 for the year, and likely a playoff spot.

No chance that happens.

Two struggling western conference teams look like interesting targets for the Kings. Calgary is struggling to score and are rumored to be shopping Hamonic.

I’d like to see something like Toffoli, Martinez and Iafallo plus retained salary for Jankowski, Kylington and Hamonic.

The rumor of Kovalchuk for Turris is also interesting. It could easily turn into a Phaneuf type trade. But he’s 30 yo and could be buried in the minors.

With $6M x 4.75 years contract remaining, even getting rid of Kovy isn’t a good enough return to take on that risk. If the trade was Turris plus a 3rd for Kovalchuk, I’d be all over that.

You’d be livid if we made the playoffs? I’d trade every player in our system if it meant we’d win another cup.

I'd much rather trade players and set up for another 5-6year window rather getting bounced in the first round. Ade we good enough to win a cup? Has are window closed? Then we need to get younger and more skilled.

But Turris just doesn’t fit on the roster or in the big picture. He’d just become an anvil in the way of JAD, Turcotte or Vilardi at 2c and 3c. You then have Prokhorkin and Amadio as well through the middle, not to mention possibly who we draft this year.

Turris is not close to the player he was, doesn’t fit and would be a buyout in a couple of years. He’s 30 now and it’s showing more on him than Kopi (who most say is over the hill, along with DD). I think he’s now at 3 consecutive games as a healthy scratch. So I’d want much more than a 3rd to even consider it as just buying out Kovi would be much better due to the shorter term. Makes no sense for me at all.

I don't see how Blake would be desperate to get rid of Kovalchuk. Not allowing him to play anymore is one thing. Taking Turris is another. The worst case scenario is you buy Kovalchuk out in June. Much cheaper than getting Turris. Unless he gets significant young assets from Nashville. Certainly more than a 3rd rd pick. In that equation, Nashville has to be the desperate team. They're the one trying to win today, and not doing a great job at it. On the other hand, Poile will never gets fired, so if they happen to miss the playoffs and waste a year, it's no skin off his nose.

I’d take Turris if there was cap retention plus prospects. Kings need bridge players and keep stocking the pipeline, kids need to stay in the A for a season or two.

Yup, Turris is overpaid damaged goods, he’s 30yo and coming off a terrible season. He’s not earning his salary this year, but he is a .5 ppg player.

Similar to Kovalchuk, he’s a bad fit on his current team. But with Arvidsson out for awhile, he might get back in the lineup.

We’ve recently seen Carter move back to center, so the Kings are obviously looking for more there. Lizotte and Kempe are tweeners who are projecting to be bottom six types at best.

Turris has no movement protection and what is probably the hardest part is getting Kovy to agree to live in the other market. Which kind of goes against all the propaganda about the player being willing to do anything to help the team.
