Columbus is still a good trading partner for Quick in my opinion. They just demoted their top goalie prospect to the AHL. And Korpisalo hasn’t grabbed the starting job.

If Blake could get Liam Foudy and a 3rd round pick for Quick and Toffoli, I’d consider it a nice piece of business.

Two things would need to happen:
- Quick would need to improve his numbers dramatically
- Columbus would need to improve their standing dramatically

The likelihood of one of these things happening is not great. The likelihood of both happening is...

a 3rd thing would have to happen. Their GM would have to be on LSD

This has happened to all significant teams in the cap era.

Chicago is going to ride Keith until the end and had Hossa's allergies save them from that one. Ask them how they like Seabrook right now.

Pittsburgh maybe a little different due to crosby/malkin ages but they still signed letang forever only to have him injured for 3/4 of the contract and they have brandon tanev till 2026.

Detroit even had Datsyuk and Zetterberg kicking around forever, Zetterberg (12 yrs) and Franzen (11 yrs) are still on their LTIR, Ericsson JUST got buried (6 yrs), Kronwall just retired.

Boston maybe did better than anyone in this regard yet they still have Chara on the roster, are paying for Beleskey and Seidenberg. Got out of Lucic, obviously, which was THE key move IMO. But they had guys legit get hurt and retire where the other teams didn't--Savard, Horton. Not that that's a benefit to the team, but salary-wise, it sure is. Thomas also retired, Ference moved on.

Guys slowly trickle out, they hardly ever get traded in one big kaboom.
I agree. I’m not hitting at DL for what he did, even in terms of the contracts he gave out, for if he was going to retain those guys he had to give term. Had he let certain guys go the fans will have gone into meltdown. We can all easily say it was a bad move after the fact. As things operated at the time it was the correct decision. It’s more making the point that the rather than anyone specific there just needed to be slightly more general turnover in the roster.

As for acquiring Richards and Carters contracts, I’d do those trades every time even knowing the long term consequences. Without those guys we would still have 0 cups.

Complete this trade Martinez to Montreal for Alzner + ______

What would it take to take on Alzner?
Would this maximize the return on A-Mart?

You brought some back when you were in country, right? Take Carla and Lenore with you to Columbus for a little party with Jarmo.

Those moves results in 2 Stanley Cups... sorry but there was nothing bad at all about those trades or even Quick's contract..

As I said, the results were great. Taking on contracts like that, and handing them out, had significant potential to not work out though. We talk about all the moves that have been made post-success that were bad. Carter, Richards, and Penner were all done before the team ever got out of the 1st round. The Kings have had 1 season of real success under Quick's current contract. And that one season of success had a thousand chances of not being successful.

You can't expect that. On top of that, don't blame Blake if he doesn't make that trade. There is not a single chance that he turns 2019 Quick and Toffoli into a soon to be 20 year old forward. Maybe if he throws in the Kings 1st this year, unprotected. Quick's numbers are worse than both goalies for the Jackets. If Quick was a UFA this year, then yes, maybe. Certainly not for Foudy, but maybe Columbus would take him. Last year was a very specific circumstance for the Jackets. Their GM isn't going to go nuts every year.

Cole Caufield

Hmmmm, maybe Dylan Cozens can be had from Buffalo:sarcasm:
They're as close as ever to a real PO spot... we can always take back Sabotka+Scandella and it affords them even more cap space to make other moves...

Talk about a late 1st in 2020, ok, maybe. But an actual, real, physical human being that was taken in the top 10/15 of the draft last year? Martinez is not good enough to make Montreal do that. Cozens is not worth some cap space for this year. Muzzin didn't even bring back that kind of talent, and he's better than Martinez.

Those are the risk/reward situations that come with not only trying to build a contender, but maintaining that window open once we actually won ..
Bigger issue in my eyes will always be the decisions made before the expansion draft.. We should have moved 2-3 vets... Martinez or Muzzin at that time would have returned something ridiculous.. Carter would have return the same coming off of his 60pt season.. The young pieces and picks would have likley rejuvenated the club and restocked our pipeline..
The biggest culprit was poor drafting and bad trades.. The Lucic trade still stings and the Cernak move was/is bad. Imagine having
Colin Miller
Erik Cernak
Kyle Connor/Matthew Barzal
Those 3 alone make a big impact and then theres the cap space.. but thats but a dream and we need to hope Vialrdi, Turcotte, Anderson, Bjornfot, Kaliyev, JAD, Smith and this years picks have some star power, some ddepth and some leadership within that group..

If we dont get those guys, odds are we're still a PO team.. But, the reality is Connor/Barzal would likley just now be making there debut, Quick woul dstill have gotten injured and tanked our season, and teh Turcotte draft still happens because the team gave up... So that works both ways and those guys wouldnt have prevented the way this team quit but they would have been nice building blocks...

Hanging with Brad Doty.
Secret's out on Walker, I guess, haha. He's been super steady, real bright spot, and he's only 24 and barely a pro. Should have 5 great years upcoming.

Now get ready to see him in every trade proposal from other teams when they try to be hipster and sneaky
Can't wait until Toronto hears about him......I love those offers from people who are clearly on some type of substance. I remember when we had to offer Toffoli as a sweetener to take on Richards contract. Now, I might have actually done that for a few picks.

Here lies the problem. Had we gotten the 2nd wave of players like were seeing around the league [2014 draft forward], there's no way were in this position we are today. We just didn't have the picks or made too risky moves to get that 3rd cup. Had DL use the same patience he used building the team, he may still have a job and we might be contending once again. Toffoli, Pearson and now Kempe are turning out to be big failures , when they were suppose to be consistent 20-25 goal scorers. This has hurt our team bigime.

The only trade that I hated by Deano was the Looch one. Miller, Jones(that turned into a 1st round pick and Kuraly) and the 13th overall for one season of Lucic is a huge overpay. There are damn few players that are worth the 13th overall, the 29th overall, a top 4 dman and a prospect(who has turned into a solid bottom 6 forward). There are damn few players worth that as a rental. None of those players are Lucic who was coming off of an 18 goal season where he scored half a point per game.

I liked having Looch on the team, but that is the kind of trade you put together for a game changer.

"Sean Walker is the RHD we need, flexible 2nd pairing RHD. We'll take him for a 4th and Bracco."

"Uh, doesn't really help our needs."

"LOL we don't want your undrafted free agent trash anyway, last place team, even with retention. Close it down."
