Likewise, because I never said trade ALL the vets. Each and every time it has been suggested it's time to trade a forward like Kopitar or Carter you have basically said, "Nope gotta keep him because we don't have a replacement for that player in the system." Well, no kidding, and why would it matter?

When have you ever advocated keeping a vet over trading him if you can get an asset or return?

When the Kings keep signing them there is always "next man up". Prior to Kopitar signing I was all for moving him and keeping Carter. Unfortunately, injuries have led to Carter being a player who is not aging well.

When have you ever advocated moving a vet? Muzzin was an obvious move last season, so I don't think he counts.

Brown is a guy I don't mind keeping. His work ethic is outstanding. Last season I thought there were a few teams out there who should have inquired about him at the deadline, especially Tampa Bay.

Why do you think there has to be an immediate replacement in the system before a player can be traded? You find a way to get a serviceable vet if you don't have an immediate replacement. They're called "fillers" for a reason.

I love how advocating trading a vet doesn't count just because you want it to.

But I have advocated trading Martinez since the Kings traded for Sekera. I advocated trading Toffoli since the Kings were eliminated by Vegas in 2017, because he has failed to be the next wave of leadership.

My message is fairly consistent. Young players have to earn a spot, and they have to be able to fulfill a role. Not trade players where you're giving spots to prospects before they're ready.

If you don't have the ability to draft or develop replacements, you need to fix the infrastructure before you worry about personnel. Once that's established, then you can develop your prospects to replace the vets you need to trade away.

It's a straightforward and clear message I've been saying for years.

So with the older "core" guys on the down slope to their careers, who do you guys see as the next "core" guys. The few to build around.

Petersen, Bjornfot, Turcotte?

Mikey Anderson, Tobias Bjornfot, Alex Turcotte, and Cal Petersen all get praised for their leadership at high levels.

Akil Thomas and Aidan Dudas are also getting some leadership recognition on their local teams (and Dudas is going to be captain of Team OHL in the Canada-Russia series next week)

Unless they get lucky the way they did with Quick, it has to be the high picks. Who knows if Petersen will be part of it. He's decently older than the rest of them. He's a UFA in 2022, and nobody that might be part of the new core is even on the NHL roster today.

I can see Grunny being a big part of the future core. He provides an element of toughness that most of our high end prospects lack.
Add in the kids in Ontario getting pro experience, Turcotte in College and of course if Vilardi comes back.. that’ll be the best pipeline we’ve had since 2003-07... that’s not even including guys like Fagemo, Shafigullan and our recently drafted European Dman... plus Andre Lee, Cole Hults and what’s likely to be a top 5 pick from a draft class that had 10-12 elite prospects

As pathetic as this team has been somehow they’re only 8 points out of a wildcard spot with three games in hand.

The West kind of sucks right now. Edmonton and St Louis have the most points right now with a +6 and +1 goal differential respectively. I think Vancouver *gag* is the best team in the conference right now. But along with Arizona they are unproven, so they'll have to show they can keep it up.

It depends on how many players get included into a core. We all agree the old one definitely has 11/23/8/32. Is Carter part of that? Was Voynov part of it? For the price they paid for him, Richards had to be part of it, but was he? Would we have said Schenn was part of it had he remained? Was he thought of as part of it the day before he got traded? Are Clifford and Lewis part of it?

It's also only been 14 games.

If we're going by GP, then Calgary isn't in a playoff spot. By points%, they're 10th in the West. The Ducks would be in the last spot, and on pace for 97 points. The Kings on the other hand are playing at a 59 point clip. They're as pathetic as they look. They need to win the next 4 in a row just to get back to even.

Here's something that'll make some of us feel old.

I attended the draft party the Kings held in 2003 when they selected a then 17-year-old Dustin Brown. Today, Brown turns 35.

Happy Birthday, Dustin. Ha. I was there too...sitting at the table dancing boy was. Brown is one of the very few still playing at an NHL level from that class.

I'm willing the play the optimist at this point and believe we're due for a big lottery win this year after getting screwed hard in the 2019 draft.

Then again, our seven years of bad luck from winning the 2014 Cup on Friday the 13th doesn't expire until June 2021.

Just hoping we do not fall in the lottery..too soon for me to focus on that though. Just going to enjoy the season while I can as it will be a long off season again
