Coleman may have another year on his contract at a cheap number, but Toffoli is a Stanley cup champion with a 30 goal season under his belt, and twice the amount of NHL experience as Coleman, but still younger than him...

Plenty of teams with cap space to possibly resign Toffoli in the playoff race...we should be able to get a similar return to this deal...

I get that but Nolan Foote was a 1st rd pick last year, so that's 2 1st's technically for Blake Coleman?? How does Toffoli at least not bring back a 1st after that trade?

One guy isn't always the same as another guy. There's always the comparables come contract time, but then again, how often does that get teams into trouble? No two players are exactly alike. TB is desperate. They're embarrassed by last year. Stamkos is 30, Hedman will be 30 in Dec, Vasilevskiy is getting a $6m bump on the cap next year. They don't need the scoring of Toffoli, but rather the more gritty play of Coleman. The price of Toffoli will depend on who the other team is, and how much they want him. Will the team getting him be as desperate as TB?

Dwight King was a champ twice over. What did he do for Montreal? Yeah, Toffoli has the Cup, but where was he on that totem pole in 2014? Bernier has a Cup too. An intangible is intangible. Just because you have a Cup, doesn't mean you necessarily have that "it" factor. We've all certainly ripped him enough over the years that I don't think that we think he has that "it" about him.

Because one winger gets X, doesn't mean another winger will get X. Unless they're hanging with Stoll.

I.E.
The really interesting thing about the Coleman trade is that the 1st is VANCOUVER's 1st, not TBL's late 1st. I mean anything can happen obviously but van's should be better.

The thing I'm really thankful for is that this will stop the "you want a 2nd AND a good prospect for Toffoli? hahahah gtfo" hot takes earlier this time from the same people that said "No way Muzzin ever pulls a 1st, never mind a +."

lumbergh

It was an idea. I didn't say it was a good idea.

Last sentence made me LOL. The rest of the post is solid as well.

So Toffoli will get us a 2nd but Coleman will get you essentially two 1st rounders because he has one more year on contract?

We have to wait and see what Toffoli will get. Without knowing what the offers are, I don't know why people jump to the best possible offer. Then if it's not that, the GM gets blamed for not getting more, except that the seller isn't really the one in control. There's a little wiggle room, but for the most part, you're putting your crap out there, and hoping someone buys it. It's a yard sale.

The really interesting thing about the Coleman trade is that the 1st is VANCOUVER's 1st, not TBL's late 1st. I mean anything can happen obviously but van's should be better.

And it has the same conditions on it, so it might be a 1st in 2021 if Vancouver should slip this year.

Muzzin ended up bringing back 3 young assets. Have to wait and see if any will be significant players, but 3 young assets nonetheless. Muzzin is not Toffoli though. Different skills, different positions, different contracts, likely different circumstances between current sellers and buyers, etc. It's just about not unfairly setting a GM up to be criticized because he doesn't get a predetermined price on an asset. The offers will be what they will be, and then we'll see what Blake gets. But to say if he doesn't get a 1st and prospect, it's a failure, well if that's not out there to get, what's a GM to do? We all want a 1st and a prospect, nobody is going to be upset if that happens, but if it happens to be less than that, that doesn't mean Blake didn't do his job.

This is the same Toffoli we've been ripping for years now, but we're expecting prime prices? Would that mean Toffoli isn't as bad as we've been saying he is? Do we just see every flaw possible because we see every shift, every game, every year?

I hear you guys like trades. Well, here's one that sucked.

Loved Marty, he shouldn't have been moved in the first place, and this was yet another one of a series of trades that led to the dark days of the team after the '93 Cup run.

So pretty much 2 firsts for Coleman? Dayem that's a great trade for the Devils. If we can only get that with Toffoli.

The thing with draft picks is they're worth more when they're both unknown, and immediate. When a real person is picked, with all their strengths and weaknesses, the potential of him being a 1st rd pick diminishes. It's like a car. Start driving it, it loses value right away. If the pick is for a year from now, or even worse 2 years away, it goes through the same process, because you have no idea where the pick will fall, or who might be available. It's an asset you gain that you can use, but to use another analogy, it's like winning the lottery. You want to take the lump sum today, and not defer it over time.

We'll see what Toffoli's value is.

Lost Sandstrom for nothing. Weird time for the Kings back then.

How the hell does Blake Coleman cost a 1st rounder and Nolan Foote? Toffoli>Coleman so I think this trade is good for us?

No, coleman isn't a rental. GMs usually wary of giving up a 1st for a rental, unless blake does a sign and trade And Coleman probably won't cost as much to resign. He's at 1.8M now.
