The initial trade was a first, conditional second, Howden, Namestikov, and some prospect going the other way for JT Miller and McD.

If the Hawks take back Callahan and send the 2019 2nd round pick, what else needs to be added to bridge the gap? Beaudin?

Yeah, that looks good. They’d probably be interested in Beaudin. If the Hawks are really going to try to win these next few seasons, then they desperately need someone like McDonough.

After looking at what Nelson got....I'm inclined to basically punt in free agency if that is going to be the rate and term. Nelson is easily a million to much and 2 year to much term for a 40-45 point middle 6 center. See if you can grab one of Nemeth or Chiarot and then work the trade route on cap strapped teams. Vegas, Toronto, Tampa probably need to shed a good forward (that will be cheaper then paying the ilk of Nelson 6 per for 6). Kapanen would be a perfect fit. Otherwise let Kubalik, Kurachev, and Sikura try to grab a spot and just keep Anisimov to the trade deadline where he'll be a bargain compared to...again Nelson. Did I mention Nelson's deal is brutal?

I like Caggiula more in a 4th line role than Kahun - Kahun has more to give and putting him with Saad and Pavelski opens up a lot of ice for him.

Tanev signing 3 years seems right- do you think he signs for less or more years?

more, much more like 6 why would Tanev sign a three year deal when he has the opportunity to nail down a 5-6 year deal at say 4million per. I don't want him for that price or term but some fool of a GM will offer him that type of deal.

This x1000...ufa market will be as brutal as always, especially if the narrative after the blues run is maroon types win cups

I’d still see if a Duchene type would sign for $8 million or less and try to sell them on being a Championship contender. If we were able to sign Duchene, that makes us a playoff team and improvements from our defense and goaltending could put us right back in the mix. We likely aren’t a Cup contender next year, but by 2020-21, I expect us to be a Cup contender.

The key is to not overpay on guys. If players are asking for too much money, pass on them and maybe go the trade route. Taking on the last year of Callahan and getting a young player like Cirelli back could benefit us, IMO. I also think Callahan could be a useful 4th line wing for us for a year.

Would anyone trade Jokiharju for Ty Dellandrea and a 2019 1st?
Doesn’t Dallas give up their 2019 1st if Zuc resigns there? Also I don’t think I would do that, I don’t see the upside with Dellandrea and the 1st will be late. Would be wiser to just keep Joker IMO

That's really tempting. We could walk away from this draft with a combination of Turcotte/Byram and Kaliyev/Broberg plus Dellandrea. I'm a big Joker fan but that would be a ridiculous haul and a great compliment to what we have in the system.

I would definitely consider that and I really like Joker. Like Jls said Broberg/Kaliyev/Knight/Brink (the last two are my personal inclusions) and Dellandrea would be very tempting. Having said that, I doubt Dallas would do that.

I actually think Pavelski becomes one of our top targets as his term fits our need- 3 years max, and the way he plays fits everything we lack as well. 3 years @7 mil is something we can definitely do and that means AA getting moved, but the upgrade between Pavelski and AA is huge. Pavs plays both C/LW/RW same as Nelson did...

Dominik Kubalik - Jonathan Toews - Patrick Kane
Alex DeBrincat - Dylan Strome - Dylan Sikura/Brendan Perlini
Brandon Saad - Joe Pavelski - Dominik Kahun
Drake Caggiula - David Kampf - Brandon Tanev

Duncan Keith - Henri Jokiharju
Bowen Byram - Connor Murphy
Gus Forsling - Erik Gustafsson
Brent Seabrook

Corey Crawford
Collin Delia

Kurashev - first call up
Boqvist - AHL - first call up
Entwistle - 2nd call up

Pavelski 3 years @ 7mil
Tanev - 3 years @ 2.25 mil

my honest belief is Gus is will be odd man out at the deadline as he will simply become unaffordable and with the kids on the way, he will fetch another 1st back in 2020...I don't want to lose Gus, but I just don't think we can keep him if he doesn't sign before the season starts.

this team turns into a Central favorite overnight...
We’re not getting Pavelski for three years at 7 per. If that’s all it took? Absolutely. He’s a power forward coming off a 38 goal year. Somebody will crazy overpay for a year or three by giving him term.

Isn't this what happened last season? There was all this talk about signing free agents and then the price was too high and we were left with Kunitz, Manning, and Ward. Quite a few teams have a lot of cap space.

Don't get me wrong, I don't want to overpay and get stuck with another Bickell-esque contract but maybe the Hawks should focus their energy on improving their team via trades and a couple depth UFA signings. Or possibly offer sheet either Kapanen or Johnsson and give up a couple 2nd round picks.

Interesting tidbit from Friedman's latest 31 thoughts: "Word from the Worlds is there’s a lot of due diligence being done on Kevin Hayes. Colorado, Philadelphia and, most interestingly, Chicago among them. Hayes, you’ll remember, was drafted by the Blackhawks but chose the Rangers in free agency. Chicago saw him score a beautiful overtime winner against them after he was traded to Winnipeg."

That’s going to cost a lot of money and term though. And frankly, he was terrible in the playoffs. Buyer beware on him.

Depending on what kind of contract Hayes wants I could see the Hawks signing him and trading Anisimov. Hayes is a big, 50 point center, and there are worse signings you could make. Not that I'm saying the Hawks should go after Hayes. Like with every other free agent, a lot of it comes down to whether the price is reasonable for their performance and you're not overpaying in salary or term.

Callahan is the exact player we should go after in a trade. I think he can still be decent, only one year left on his deal, and Tampa desperately needs to shed cap, so they would have to throw in some sweetener. Make it happen Stan.

If we do select Byram would you guys consider exploring a trade for Taylor Hall similar to the Stone trade? Boqvist for Hall if Hall signs for 9.5 like Stone? I’m not saying I would do it I’m just curious what others think.

In a heartbeat. I’d trade #3 for him without a second thought

If you can get Taylor Hall for a decent hit like that (and without absurd overpayment in assets), you make it happen.
