i cant beleive USA had no other D available
and hughes playing ahead of Fox ? thats ******ed
and no, i dont see him in top 10 at all
Hughes is a better PP quarterback and puckmover than literally anyone else available for this tournament.

Sounds an awful lot like you're a fan of a team who's got another defenseman on Team USA, and you're complaining about that. Let me guess... Calgary?

Sad thing about this for Slovakia, if they lose to Finland, and the USA gets at least 1 point from Canada/Finland, then Slovakia still has to get something from the Denmark game to avoid 5th place. You would think after this win that's probably likely, but Denmark is still in it with a regulation win on New Years Eve.

IIRC I remember a long time ago Germany beat the USA on the first day of the tournament, and because of other h2h's didn't make the QF, went to the relegation round where that win didn't mean anything and got relegated anyway

I suppose Slovakia to beat Denmark, which really looks not good at all this year. Regarding the US team, they have not so many hours to get ready for the Canada game. Tonight, they looked tired in the 3rd, which surprised me, as they didn't play yesterday. But the skating of most US players just wasn't dynamic at all. Many Slovaks were simply faster, with better acceleration. US tried to use their technical/passing skills on maximum, and they were certainly successful in that, as soon as they got the puck under their control in the offensive zone. But especially on the Slovak counterattacks, their skating came out as just slow and worn out. Perhaps it was just one bad game.

Hughes didn't have a good game, but WTF at all the people pronouncing he's a bad prospect now. Apparently you aren't familiar with anything else he's ever done, including the prior game this tournament?

It's the same story year after year, or should I say game after game even. People think this particular half dozen game stretch is some kind of special magnifying glass that makes everything else irrelevant.

You've never played on the outdoor rinks if -20 made you freeze. You don't even feel it when you're constantly playing.

It’s going to the bench that will suck. But they’ll probably have heaters on the bench.

I think people are being too hard on Hughes. He's obviously pretty dynamic offensively, and yes his defending is not great at this point. But he's very young and that aspect may get better. But in my opinion, even if it doesn't, having a one-dimensional player isn't the end of the world. Nobody gets mad at stay-at-home defenders that don't contribute anything offensively. Where is the criticism of Lindgren who plays heavy minutes and yet is unnoticeable? People are okay with that because they understand that he's just there to defend. Hughes is likewise just there to create offense and he does that quite well, even if it didn't happen for him tonight. Cut the kid some slack.

better than anyone else in this tournament ??? LOL

i will be surprised if he is picked top 20

If the States can bounce back tomorrow and find a way to beat Canada this really should just be a bump. But if they lose then this could snow ball into a bad tournament. Gonna be interesting to see how they respond to this honestly.

ya they have bench heaters but it still will suck finger tips and toes will still be cold if u take a puck or slash not to mention the ice is alot harder wich is better for skating just not falling lol. shld be a rough game also i expect a few injuries

Exactly. Hughes has to work on his defense, but he's borderline elite offensively already. That's a good place to start from. Besides, being able to coach players to play better defense is basically one of the universal skills that all pro coaches share. I like the odds of him developing in that way over time.

And their final game against Finland won't be a walk in the park either.

His skills are evident for sure, even in what would be considered a bad defensive performance from him tonight. People can't just discount what he does do well because of one bad game.

Guy has tons of talent.
