Need to know your prediction for Hughes draft position. ;-)

You don't know anymore then anybody else lol.
That's usually how games are given out to the goalies in WJC. Why do you think Point (CAN) got to shut the Slovaks out in their game? Won't change anything though with Hart starting vs. USA tmr

As a leaf fan I focused in on Woll.

First goal - counter attack two on one. This one went right through him. Two on ones are always tough on the goalie but I'm sure he would want this one back.

Second goal - was able to get nice and square to the shooter but was beat by a perfect back hand shot. Looked like he was a bit fooled with how the shot came off the stick but I guess that's what makes back handers so tough to stop. All in all good positioning but just a better shot.

Third goal - skater was given way to much space upon entering the zone. He then got all three Americans in front of him to go down while the fourth American behind him didnt back check. Woll challenge the shooter as he should and was forced to scramble as his defence didn't prevent the shooter at all. The first save he made was amazing but as he tried to recover the second went under him. If he stayed on the ice he makes that second save.

All in all a decent game for Woll he made some really tough saves and was beaten on some goals off horribly uncharacteristic defensive breakdowns. Needed to come up with that one save to help his team out but tonight just wasn't that game. I think he may have left the door open for a goalie competition but this game was far from his fault.

This is definitely NOT how games are typically divided amongst goalies at the WJC. If Oettinger was the real starter, then he would have gotten that first game with Woll getting this one. Woll got both. For them to go to Oettinger in this big one without any action earlier in the week is just odd.

Missed the game, how did Woll look? Chance Oettinger starts next game?
Pretty sure there was no intention of playing Woll on less than 24 hours rest. The real question is, how well does Oettinger have to play tomorrow to steal the job vs Finland, and then the knock out rounds.

Someone needs to make a gif of the American defense on the last goal.

EDIT: It's also very strange how in this tournament, US is constantly the only Top-5 nation that gets upset like this once every 2 years or so. Other teams are way less prone to this. They usually lose to each other. Exceptions such as Swiss/Russia in 2010 exist, but are rarer.

It's odd, but analytically I can see the argument for it. This obviously works on the premise they think Woll is the better goalie (Again, not making a judgment, just going off how Motzko has used them).

Getting Woll into 3 games with a days rest between each game probably works better. Canada was always going to be the toughest game (and with the bye no longer in effect) it and it being the best approach may be to try and lock your points vs the 3 weaker teams (although Finns aren't really weak) and hope to pull something out in an unconventional game outdoors. Canada is going to be fresher.

I think the removal of the bye to the semis makes you more likely to chance it in your toughest game.

The problem is, they blew this game and that makes points vs Canada and the USA more essential.

Off the top of my head, I don't remember the US being upset by a lower seed since the last time I saw Slovakia do it several years ago. Any other examples that you can identify?

I realized that I was more so thinking of USA teams as winning Gold or leaving the tournament at the QF stage. Czechs defeated them in 2012 in Edmonton. That was a horrible showing where they were in relegation round.

But yes, Slovakia beat them in 2009 QF as well.

Wow, I had to look up that 2012 performance. Considering how good the US has been in recent years, it's surprising to see them have such a terrible tournament such a short time ago. The good news is that they cleaned up in the relegation round!

I would not call it a "decent game".

The first goal was flat out bad.

Crease is Oettinger's the rest of the way.
