I find it interesting that Timmins said there's a clear top 11 as the top tier in this years draft, i personally have 12. I wonder which 1 of those guys he's less high on.. it could be Farabee but Farabee screams TT/MB type player, no one in the draft has his hustle/work ethic and he also has unbelievable IQ and a high talent lvl.

Dahlin/Svechnikov/Zadina/Dobson/Tkachuk/Boqvist/Wahlstrom/Hughes/Bouchard/Smith/Kotkaniemi/Farabee, that's my 1st tier. Lundestrom and Kravtsov start my next tier at 13/14.

Geez. I can't believe you guys are basing your draft rankings on combine results. How many of you would take Casey Mittelstadt over Cody Glass today? Because Casey couldn't even do a bench press last year and still looked amazing on the ice. Habs spend millions in conditioning equipment and personnel, so a 17/18 year old's strength should not be a determining factor. Talent, character, speed and ability to grow should be far more telling.

Personally I think Ty Smith is possibly the one he doesnt value as much as the others..

Yeah Farabee fits Timmins type player to a tee. I'm sure they like him, with good reason.

If I had to guess, maybe Bouchard. Not the best skater on the back end, a bit erratic in his effort defensively and one of the oldest in the class. I think he's the wild card in the top 12.

Thanks for the response, pretty neat stuff. Can't you adapt your personality or have it change over time (with maturity for example)?
This point gets argued a lot, old style thinking would be no and that you are who you are by the time you're a teen but there's been a lot of advancement into how to develop the mind and change thought patterns (e.g. Cognitive Behaviour Therapy).

Key point is you have to be willing to do it and put the work in, understanding where you're at is a great start

15 years ago I suffered from anger management issues and it was getting really bad and likely heading for divorce and the wife called me out on it. I did a lot of reading on the subject and dedicated myself to changing that and people are now shocked when I tell them how I used to be and those that knew me then can't believe the change so some things are possible

MB and Co have been pushing my buttons tho

The 100$ question

Does kotkaniemi have the potential of an elite or good first line Center ?

If not then why take him at #3?

More of a cop-out answer but we won't know until further down the road. While highly unlikely, Dahlin can bust and Kotkaniemi could be the stud of the draft.

Kotkaniemi could be garbage and a centre drafted in the 6th round becomes a stud.

It's fun to play around a HockeyDB and run through each draft as they have the NHL stats alongside each player

As WTK mentioned earlier rankings don't mean a lot - they're probably safe to follow but more often than not they're wrong especially after the first few picks so go with who you think is the best

I'm not 100% sold on BPA tho especially when you've gone decades without something at some point you have to take a gamble (or 6). Also looks like in the salary cap world it's become tougher to fill some roles through trades and UFA than others, wingers and 2nd pairing D can be had, Top 6 Cs and top pairing Ds are tougher and basically need to be drafted (f*** I sound like Bergevin...).

An elite C (like a Tavares) can also make an average winger look like an all star but rarely works the other way around

Are you guys willing to move our first 2 x 2nd rounders for a late 1st? I m thinking Foudy.
Probably not our 1st 2, one thing I looked at was dropping from 3-6 with Detroit in return for them returning the favour with their next 2 picks

We pick 6, 30, 33
Instead of 3, 35, 38

No. as a blueprint, in 2008, Leafs had to give 7th overall + 2nd round + 3rd round to move up two spots to 5th overall. 3rd OA is way more valuable than 6th OA. Teams are gonna have to pay through the nose if they want our pick. I'd accept 3rd for 6th + Detroit's next year first (top 5 protected) + 33.

I ignore the combine results except for vert. Even then it's a small thing. We're not drafting for the NFL or NBA. Moreover we only get a single sample of their abilities. We don't get to collect two samples and see how much they've changed over time.

I'm mostly following the interviews to sift out any Beaulieus. Haven't found one yet.

I remember guys like Mike Winther dominating the combine.

People gushing over Miller because he's a physical freak but he just makes bad decisions all over the ice and I don't think he's gonna fix them.

Foudy's a freak, but everyone already knew that. Nils's jumping performance was a bit of a surprise, though.
