I have to compare him to Barkov because there’s no other 1C that recently played in Finland to compare him to.

There's nothing particular about Finland and centers though. These are two things: does Jesperi possess a high degree of offensive ability becoming of a first line center, and can Jesperi play center. Moreover, we have some idea of general league quality of Liiga, and all players' performances (whether they're centers or not) tell us about it. I think Jesperi is pretty obviously offensively gifted, and he seems to be able to play center. He's just not a windmill slam dunk like Barkov.

I've read W3K long enough to know that he doesn't "BS".

Do you think it might be possible for you to make your point without resorting to this type of confrontational qualifier? I respect your points and enjoy reading you but that kind of term is really not justified with a poster who always provides ample justification and reasonable arguments to support his points. Thanks in advance for considering my request.
It wasn't personal, just i thought both points were BS lol

Veleno isn't gomez and both he and Poehling can shoot it enough for a goalie to play them on a 2 on 1

While you may not know specifically where he should rank, would you be prepared to say that anywhere between 3 and 7 is plausible or far-fetched?

Is Kotkaniemi the youngest birthday in the draft? And how much leeway would you guys afford in terms of greater potential for growth on account of his young age vs. the other top prospects who are older?

I said earlier that I could see him be around ppg player next year in Liiga, if that happens it would signal #1C potential at the next level.
Would think that top7 atleast is fair, given his development. His age& father being his Liiga teams coach to me is a ++.

Heiskanen last year, one of the younger prospects in his draft, great draft year and had a beast u18's, exploded offensively on his +1 season.
Vesalainen struggled offensively on his draft year, but had massive u18's, exploded on his +1 season, same as Heiskanen one of the younger prospects on his draft, but Heiskanen is still a different tier prospect than him.
I like when prospects finish their seasons strong, it's good to build from that.

I'm a Finn so I try not to sell these kids too much here.

I don't think Veleno is a bust but he could be a similar player to Danault. Good size and good skating but limited offensively. At best I think he could end up being a Duchene type.
I completely agree with this. From watching Veleno, looks like a third line center. Not enough skill to finish, but will work hard & be a two way guy. Not someone I would select in top 20. Looking for top six forwards or a top 4 dman in the first round.

I have to compare him to Barkov because there’s no other 1C that recently played in Finland to compare him to.

It’s also unfair to compare him to Laine and Pulju. Those two were on better teams and got less icetime. But internationally they were much better than Kotkaniemi and they didn’t disappear in the Finnish playoffs.

To address your ninja edit, Jesperi and Pulju had comparable deployments, with Pulju getting more PP time. Oh, and Pulju was playing with one Sebastian Aho in his post-draft season. Laine played way more, and had way more PP time.

I feel like I should emphasize this, but I'm not saying that Jesperi is as good as Laine, only that his offensive ability and accomplishments should be taken seriously. They stack up very well.

If they are equal in everything else, sure. It doesn't mean I'd want Byron Froese over Nikita Kucherov.

You know who was just in the Finnish league and became a #1 centre in the NHL? Barkov. You know what Barkov did his draft year? 20 more points than Kotkaniemi, playing as a centre the entire year and he didn't disappear in the playoffs like Kotkaniemi. He's a better skater and a better playmaker. I don't see 1C upside with the kid.

The fact remains everyone in the professional ranks, every single person, has Zadina over Kotkaniemi. You have to draft the best player.

Barkov was a beast as a 17y old, and he wasn't a rookie. Laine didn't get close to his offensive numbers in Liiga.
These kids can grow a ton during the season which won't show in points.

Rantanen had 28 points on his draft season, while being close to year younger and not a rookie, Aho had 11 points on his draft season.
Rants hit 84 points this year, Aho 65 and is Carolinas best player.

I think some team takes Veleno from the 12-18 range. I'm not high on him and we need to be careful with targeting centers cause we need them. Poehling, Vejdemo, Evans, Danault, DLR are decent depth for the future. We don't need more middle 6 or bottom 6 potential. We need top 6 potential. Most of us feel we should pass on Veleno... If he had a better shot, I would feel different. However, he is limited offensively. I wonder what Ducharme would say about drafting Veleno vs other centers. I would trust his opinion on what he thinks about Veleno... the next Danault or the next Duchene? Or somewhere in the middle?

Five of 7 goals were on a man advantage (one empty net).. only two (against Canada) he created himself. The second one was a terrible rebound by the goalie.

Zadina absolutely feasted on a good PP which featured two outstanding passers in Necas and Kaut.

If anything his WJC performance confirms that his effectiveness level requires playmaking talent around him to unlock his true potential.

So why wouldnt Zadina do well on PP's that feature drouin and galchenyuk? better playmakers than his czech teammates.

And why discredit the Canada goals? Svech never scores off bad rebounds?

I think more should be said that come elimination rounds facing the best teams on the planet, in the QF vs Finland he scores 2 in a 4-3 OT win, and then in the Semi-finals his team gets blown out 7-2 by Canada, where he again, scores 2 goals in an elimination round game, the only ones for his team

not padding stats vs latvia and suisse here...

Svech is the better player/prospect, and will go 2 and with some luck will go 3 to us, im just wondering why were starting a war with this whole Zadina at 3 thing...

It's trying to discredit the asinine notion that Zadina is neck and neck with Svech. He's not. This is nothing about whether or not Zadina is a valuable pick at 3.

Necas is miles ahead of Drouin as a playmaker, not even close.

Gustafsson is Ryan O'Reilly. Change my mind.
Gustafsson is not ROR, here me out.
1. He never drove into a Timmies (is there even timmies where Gustafsson plays)
2. Hes not paid.
3. Hes not holding out for pay.
4. Hes not a good ol canadian boy so all of the aformentioned is ignored.
5. His name isnt Ryan Oreilly, Ryan Oreilly is actually going to come out in the 3rd or 4th.
