Zadina does the thing we need most, and has accomplished it at every level he’s played so far: Score. This will be an exciting player to have on our team. I know the salt of the lottery is still on our lips but this kid will be a stud.

I would probably only trade back with NYI if Jesperi is still there. Kotkaniemi + one of Kravtsov, Smith, Farabee for #3. (doubt Hughes would be there)
It's a gamble though. If Kotkaniemi makes it there, then sure, but you don't know who will be there.

Have to say K'Antplay's having a good game. Had some good passing in all three zones.

Yeah, he's attenuated a lot of the concerns I had with him. Cause let's be honest here, he looked awful at times at the beginning of the year. Even at the 5 nations his pivots and backwards skating were soso when he was tired. He was making a lot of low percentage plays in his own end, too.

But I thought he was much improved even a month after that and he looked excellent, minus his first game or two, through the U18. Liked him quite a bit.

At this point i think id just pick kotkaniemi 3rd. **** it.

For what it's worth.. that's what Grant has the Habs doing. My concern is.. I just don't think Kotkaniemi has the skating or the upside in his skating to be a Centre at the next level. I think that's the biggest draw back.

Interesting.

I wouldn't draft him quite that high if I knew he would be a winger. I've ranked him assuming he would be a center.

If we are taking a W, the truth of the matter is, unless it's Svech (low possibility), we are stuck with a prospect who's going to need a superstar C to unlock their true potential and we aren't going to have that.
There's a whole lot of fortune telling in this post.

You just basically foretold 4 future events in a short post.

Why not though? His skillset is as valuable as any other forward in the draft IMO, save for maybe Denisenko but hes tiny and he doesnt produce much so far.

Doesnt take much projecting to say the Habs will not have a 1C next year or the year after. Outside chance at Hughes and Tavares maybe.
Maybe not...but it takes a whole lot of projecting to say the Habs will be drafting a winger, who is not going to be Svechnikov and whoever that winger will be, will not be able to untap his full potential unless the Habs acquire a #1C.

Agreed - and we need to take a longer term approach to the rebuild. If you look at Toronto, they picked Nylander in '14, Marner in '15, and Matthews in '16. We need to look at Zadina like Nylander - A very good piece to add for the rebuild, but we need a couple more drafts to build the core.

Edit: my fear is that MB sees Zadina as NHL ready and looks to compete. Adding Zadina, we actually have a pretty decent forward group (Centre position aside). With a healthy Weber and a bounce back season from Price, I could see the team bouncing back and fighting for a wildcard spot next year. The problem is that it is not enough given our weaknesses. We need to continue to build assets rather than look for a quick turnaround.

This, exactly this.

I mentioned this in the draft GDT, sincr half the place was losing their minds about how better Zadina was than anyone there.

That's not how I read the GDT. The argument for the most part was whether Zadina is better than Tkachuk. Is that even a debate?
