If true that the Wings really want our pick, I would seriously think about trading it for their 2019 first.. The logic behind this is pretty simple, the Wings are likely going to suck again next year, more than Buffalo, more than Arizona ect and the next draft is highly rich in top centers like Hughes Dach and Lavoie (who Im very high on and think he will be one of the absolute risers in that draft) to name few, so not only we could end up hitting an homerun with our own pick, but we could hit a grand slam with both picks... And if Detroit add one of their early second picks, that even better...
And if they end up with a 10-15th pick next year, you're fine with that?

And if they do miss?
Take a look at their line-up, their defense is worst than ours, Zetterberg isnt getting younger, goaltending sucks, they traded Tatar away and their kids arent impressive at all... thats a nice gamble to take IMO and next year draft already looks very very good.. so even if we draft as far as 8, what is worst case scenario IMO, we still could get a very good player..
I
Realistically, what teams could do worst than Detroit next year? Islanders if they lose Tavares is a possibility... Vancouver without the Sedins is very probable... Rangers is a possibility... Ottawa is a possibility as well, Buffalo with Mittlestadt and Dahlin, doubtful, Arizona was one of the best teams in the second half last season so I would say highly doubtful... Cant see any other teams doing worst than Detroit and while Détroit could move back 2 spots, they also could win the lottery...

Or we could just take a very good player at 3. I'm not really seeing the point here, and there's a lot of risk for us, without mentioning the fact that Detroit's first, unprotected, is absolutely not available. Mostly for the reasons you enumerate here, but also because nobody trades unprotected firsts. St Louis didn't trade their first unprotected. Neither did Winnipeg.

We could end up with a very good player drafting in the top 10 this year...

IF we think Detroit will tank next year I might consider a swap of 3rd for 6th in exchange for the right to swap '19 1st rounders, but I don't see any reason for the Habs to come out of this draft without making a pick in the first round. It would be a major gamble that has more downside than upside IMO.

We could get a very good player but not necessary a center, theres Kotkaniemi but he has played wing for the whole season in the liga, next year has an abundance of young skilled centers... as for the lottery protection, that would be the condition, we swap picks but your 1st next year remains unprotected...

Kotkaniemi will play C next year and you can be sure hell be viewed by most as the player we missed if we dont draft him. Hes a stud.

Very good player, but if he ends up playing center, I see him more like a 1B-2A center, I dont think he has the top end skills and skating to face the best centers in the league... that being said, I really like him and wouldnt be upset if we draft him..

What indicates that? The fact he wasnt on the radar early?

I still can't believe we are one pick away from future all-star Svec.

**** Carolina, dammit.
I really wouldn't be shocked if Zadina ends up better. Zadina always looks better when they're on the same ice, and Svechnikov benefitted greatly from superior line mates.

Point is both are LWs so not who we should be crying over.

I'd argue that Somppi, Fortier, Lavoie and Groulx are better than most of what Barrie had.

But regardless, Svechnikov and Zadina arent close.

They aren't close and nobody would be saying different if we had pick #2.. just people being homers cause they are convinced he's who we are taking.
Uhh only the oracle Bob McKenzie has said differently on multiple occasions...

To be clear I'd take Svech first, but I just wouldn't be shocked if Zadina ends up the better player.

This is a good watch for a closer look at some of Bouchard's miscues on defense and sort of a re-occurring theme for him.

This gives credence to my sneaking suspicion Bouchard's issues go beyond a lack of effort or just the result of playing alot of minutes. Further pointing to signs of questionable hockey sense and flaws in his decision making.

Initially I thought he just had off-nights in alot of my viewings but there's enough to be concerned.
Consider his experience in the league, his age and physical maturity...that's red flags.
