They had the same production as Dobson in Juniors, that was my point.
I agree that Dobson has a lot of potential but he’s far from a lock to become a Pietrangelo (at least offensively). Like I said, there have been slight concerns about his offensive game translating.
Hughes on the other hand is actually better than Gostisbehere was in his draft year. I believe his potential is higher, he’s a better skater too. His shot doesn’t concern me, it can be improved upon and his ability to carry the puck into the O-zone is almost second to none (Dahlin’s better). He has insane vision too.
In the end, I believe Dobson’s floor is higher but Hughes’ ceiling is much higher. Since we have many RD prospects and almost nobody at LD apart from Mete, we should find someone to play with Weber, who still has 3-4 years of good hockey ahead of him IMO.
As mentioned, none of our RD prospects are likely to be first pairing kind of guys. Obviously anything can happen and maybe Juulsen could be the defensive conscience of someone like Hughes on the first pairing, but none are likely to be obvious legit first pairing guys on their own. As for Weber, the player we draft will be about 15 years younger than him, so I don't think finding a guy who could play with him should really play into things. Besides, in one of Dobson's combine interviews he said he played on the left side last year and is comfortable on both sides, so being a righty wouldn't necessarily rule him out even if they did want to draft someone to play with Weber.
