Well, if you ignore the tremendous development he had in his draft year, that might hold true.
I'm talking from a skating standpoint ie the knee injury/skinny legs theory that NP wrote of, in addition to the skating coach benefit.

If Kotkaniemi proves worthy of the 3rd pick, that will be the narrative.

2013: Let's draft for size.

2018: Let's draft for speed.

2023: Let's draft for players with no size nor speed.

As much as I want Boqvist (still #3 on my list and first choice for us), I think the chances of Tavares coming to Montreal with a sub-$9m cap hit are higher than us picking Boqvist.

I would be pleasantly surprised with The Qvist at 3, but not feeling it.

I'm not sure. Just looking at the top 11/12, I think the Wings, Blackhawks, and Islanders are possible teams that can take Kotkaniemi. I'd be willing to gamble all the rest in the top 12 don't take Kotkaniemi.
How would you know ? Every team could use an asset like Kotkaniemi. Its not a depth chart thing.
Montreal, Ottawa, Arizona, Detroit, Vancouver, Chicago, NYR, NYI, Dallas all need a center of Kotkaniemis type in their pool, Especially the first seven. The only team that I see firmly passing on a center is Edmonton, and thats mostly because theyre dumb and they really need D.

If Kotkaniemi was a prospect like PLD, I would agree with you. However, he is a fringe top 10 prospect. The point is I looked at every team in the top 11/12 (Islanders with two picks) and I believe the threat to take Kotkaniemi is the Wings, Blackhawks, and Islanders. The rest of the teams have depth at center and I don't see them passing on the other talent that are in the top 10 rankings.

The think with Kotkaniemi is projection as he peaked late in this draft year. I know what you are saying. Heck, maybe the Sens take him but I think they need help on D more.

Timmins also touched on this as well.... teams pay attention to what other teams need and are doing here and there. Wings and Blackhawks took Kotkaniemi out for dinner as did the Habs I believe.

I get the impression that Vancouver is not that interested. Just a hunch from that draft list meeting video, but they were pretty clearly talking about Kotkaniemi at first, and two of the scouts didn't really seem to feel it.

Man from those hints from Timmins (skating and character matter more than size and the longterm project philosophy) and Zadina's (They're going for D or Center) I get the feeling the Habs will pick Hughes.
He's a dynamic player, NCAA tested (what Timmins tend to like). We probably have the best player to help him develop (In Weber).

Doubt it's Hughes. Him not taking part in the combine because he was tired is not the type of attitude they are gonna be intom

The fact that they talked about him and Dellandrea is a pretty clear indication that they don't give a shit about the center theory @ToLegitToQuit proposes.

I know it's a stretch but Ty Smith fits that bill as well.

Talk vs what they will actually do is completely different. Heck, I expect all top 15 teams to talk about Kotkaniemi and any prospect ranked in the top 15. I don't think you understand what I am saying. I mentioned prior to Timmins interview about who I think would take Kotkaniemi based on their depth charts and Timmins touched on this as well. Teams pay attention to what other teams are doing. Kotkaniemi was taken to dinner by the Wings and Blackhawks, and the Habs. Did any other team do this?

I'm sure you'll get over it in no time. By the time he puts that Habs jersey on, he'll be the best center prospect not in the NHL.
Can't lose face though, so he probably wont and hell get the Galchenyuk treatment.

Also, can't wait for the smear campaign to start on the main board. Watch the player we draft suddenly become a huge project, a long shot, flawed, etc.

I'm sure some Kings fans would chime in, too.
"Needs huge work on his skating if he wants to make the NHL".
"If you want a former captain like Brown, on a reasonnable cap hit for a 60 point player, you better start at Kotkaniemi+1st+...".

I'm wondering if it's actual information he got or just quickly glanced at our team and saw the only person in Montreal who's not a winger was Graham Rynbend and just assumed we wouldn't take another.
Okay I laughed at Rynbend, probably harder than I should've.

I'm pretty sure its a combination of both, there was probably not that much of an interest showed from the staff.
