No we don't. This is the common mistake which is heralded as the "common sense" argument, but it's not.

We already have 3 guys who can pot 30 and 3 others who can go 20.

What they are missing is PLAYMAKERS. We have scorers, we need players who drive the play and be creative.

You don't draft for NEED either.

We're a goal starved team because we don't have bonafide playmakers and playdrivers, not because we're missing scorers.

If Pacioretty and/or Galchenyuk are dangled to help shore up center and to possibly gain extra drafting advantages in this draft, we won't have that scoring depth off the wings anymore -- hence Zadina.

It's not unrealistic. Pac scored less this year, why?

Missing Markov and Radulov is probably the biggest reason.

Being unrealistic is expecting Zadina to help our offense when he'll be yet another scoring winger added to a team without playmakers.

All three of you who responded to me have an incapacity to see the big picture.

And Zadina is no Tarasenko.
Youre right on the playmaker/shooter thing but the draft isnt where you should fix that. Plenty of playmakers in our pool, this is a pro scouting matter, not amateur.

He doesn't have franchise winger potential. And yeah, I see him being more of a 30-30-60 guy. I don't think Zadina is anything special or unique, but he'll be a good player for sure.

I'm really torn between Boqvist and Zadina.

This would be the perfect year to trade down. Hell, I'd be happy with Tkachuk if we could nab him outside of the top 5 + whatever other assets we'd get for moving down.

No credability. Are you a fortune teller? You have no idea what Zadina will/won't be. Scouts say he does have franchise winger potential and I think I trust them a bit more then I trust you.

Tarasenko is a terrible comparison, but saying Zadina doesnt have "franchise" potential is dumb.
Maybe he ends up a 25 goal scorer maybe he can consistently finish top 10 in scoring every year no one knows you can try to argue eather way but the truth is he has to play in the show before we can make any judgments

I believe either Zadina or Boqvist have the prerequisite talent & passion levels, to be franchise changing players. The rising level of play by Kotkaneimi has had the same effect on this poster, belief in his ability to become a franchise type of passionate leader at the center position. Darryl Sittler / Bobby Clarke type of two way offensive center, whose passion & team first play indicates he can be a driving force that teammates emulate, IMHO!!!... Any one of these three prospects have huge upside, as team leaders IMHO:dumbo::dumbo::dumbo::walrus::walrus::walrus::banana::bb::dd::dm::devdance::pickle: Anyway you cut it the Habs will be a much better team with each one of these players.

My dream scenario is Svechnikov at 3rd, Kotkaniemi at 10 (after a trade of Pacioretty + something), and then we throw all our remaining 2nd/3rd rd picks at dman.

Could you imagine? In 2020, we could have :

Lehkonen - Drouin - Svechnikov
Galchenyuk - Danault - Scherbak
Hudon - Kotkaniemi - Gallagher
I don't wanna imagine that at all. Drouin is not a center. Never will be. Danult is a 3rd line center on a contending team.

Tarasenko is a winger who influences the game on offence in a variety of ways. Absolutely Zadina does not project the same way.

Despite being Russian, if people knew that about Tarasenko he would have been drafted higher.

People did. Kuznetsov went late and we all knew the potential he had.

He was projected to be a good player, not a number 1 centre. If that were for sure his potential, someone would have drafted him sooner, too. Just like Jamie Benn, or any other player who's high-end now and wasn't drafted really high.

Always hard to judge who will become anything. There's going to be someone drafted this year late who's going to be a stud.

Scouting is so hard.

I'm on board with Zadina not being a true franchise winger. If he ends up being a 30-30 winger or even a 40-30 winger then that production is still Pacioretty level. A very good 1st line winger. But not franchise. His game is completely different from Pacioretty but Zadina isn't exactly the most dynamic offensive threat either. He's a solid bet to be an impact forward but Wahlstrom, Boqvist, Kotkaniemi, Hughes all have higher potential IMO.

Probably worst thing to happen to us was winning the 3rd pick in the lottery. Zadina is exactly what we don't need, and he is at best equivalent to prospect like Hughes and Wahlstrom, which are prospects with more upside that also fits a need for us. A smart GM would trade down, but Bergevin is a dumb (always been) and scared (since realizing his incompetence) GM, so he will go with the flow and select Zadina, and go on TV after picking him and say that Zadina was a consensus stud at the 3rd spot. Barring a Tavares miracle, we are going to suck for a decade, because our organization is too dumb to trade the big assets and do a real proper rebuild, which need to be done now that MB has killed our window. We are re-entering the Houle era, and I am not convinced that a Gainey-type GM will be there at some point to take us out of the dark ages.

What??? Zadina is a stud with huge upside. People here talk about him like he's a run of the mill prospect, he's nhl ready with serious skills. Wake the fk up!!
