Martin Kaut isn't (Bela)Russian enough for @WeThreeKings, and plus, he's actually seen him play. Guaranteed lower ranking fo sho.

Nah, I like him but I don't see there being much more growth to his game. He feels like a guy who doesn't have a whole lot more to go to reach his max. Where I have other players ranked ahead that I think have a higher talent ceiling.

Being in the top 31 for me this year is a bit different than previous years because I've completely removed players who I wouldn't pick in the first round that are likely to go there.

Hallander vs Kaut quick why do you choose Hallander.

Obvious answer is goalscoring, I kinds agree, but theres some more ceiling to Martin Id say.

I simply like Hallander better. I think he's got the higher upside and has a more diverse skill-set. Kaut makes some beautiful passes and he's pro ready in the way he approaches the forecheck/cycle game.. but the things I have seen Hallander do in traffic, in a men's league, aren't things I see from a lot of prospects at this age.

Where I see the two of them now vs. where I project they could go, I simply think Hallander will be the more diverse player in an offensive approach.

With Brady rumoured to be returning to BU for another year, my odds in our little wager got a whole lot better.
We'll see what happens, but I wouldn't put too much stock in that. I fully expect him to be in the NHL next year. If I recall, the bet was who will have the best goal scoring season in the NHL over the next 2 seasons? Still think Brady wins that easy.

If the Habs are happy with one of Kotkaniemi, Hughes, Dobson, Boqvist, Wahlstrom, trade down! Pretty sure one of them is available at 10!

Or trade Patch for the 10 pick. Patch+ for 10+ type deal. Patch would fit the Oilers needs! Let them pre negotiate a contract extension.

Also curious to see Kotkaniemi still ranked around 15 by many lists? Pretty sure he goes in the 8-12 range

Can you elaborate on their ceiling? Im not sure I follow. I think both are similar, they have traits that are NHL ready and other areas in which they need to work on. I think Hallander is the one the closest from his ceiling. Aside from the strength and speed hell need to add, his game seems pretty close to what it would be at the NHL level. Kaut, im not sure. Maybe if he wants to be a mediocre bottom 6 offensive forward

Kaut looks to me like a middle six guy potential wise where Hallander is top 6 to me. I think it's more in the realm of possibility that Hallander can be a top line winger than Kaut can.

I really like Boqvist but concussions scare me.

They should only scare the person receiving the blow, only if someone has to urinate on them to wake them up!!!...:laugh::laugh: Many great players have had HOF careers, despite having had numerous concussions. Fighting concussions are a whole different Animal though.:thumbu::thumbu::thumbu:

No harm in trying, but I just dont see Patches signing a long term contract with Edmonton. Sounds like he wants either Florida or somewhere near Connecticut.

Agree on Kotkaniemi, I don't see him being available outside 12 and certainley could be much higher.

Here's my consensus based upon everything I've read, limited viewings and all expert mock drafts. 99% of scouts have a big 3 then a drop off.. I know there not always right but I trust them a lot more then a bunch of posters on a message board...no offence.

Dahlin

Svechnikov
Zadina

we would be stupid not to take Zadina as we are a goal starved team.

If we can't trade up to 2 and they don't want Zadina, then they should trade down and get extra picks for next years draft. If the player they want gets picked, it's not like there aren't 4 or 5 very interesting options that most would likely still be there depending on how far they drop back.

Yeah but how often do tiers really hold up post draft? In 2015 it was an obvious 1-2 and then 3-5 were their own tier. However, players like Rantanen, Barzal, Provorov, Werenski and Aho all have a claim for the top 5 just 3 years later.

Agreed. Best case scenario, Zadina ends up a similar caliber to Pastrnak. Worst case, he ends up as Galchenyuk. Likely ends somewhere in between a la Forsberg.

Big fan of both D-men but we need scoring and Zadina can provide that.

No we don't. This is the common mistake which is heralded as the "common sense" argument, but it's not.

We already have 3 guys who can pot 30 and 3 others who can go 20.

What they are missing is PLAYMAKERS. We have scorers, we need players who drive the play and be creative.

You don't draft for NEED either.

We're a goal starved team because we don't have bonafide playmakers and playdrivers, not because we're missing scorers.

Who can pot 30? Max is as good as gone. Gallagher had an outlier year. So did Galchenyuk a couple of years ago. You can’t count on them to score 30 per year.

Lets say Zadina ends up as good as Tarasenko. Do you not think that our offense would become much better with him? Maybe a playmaker would be preferable, but adding a goalscoring talent like Zadina will still help our offense a lot.

Thats the best case scenario but its VERY VERY unrealistic. Pacioretty played with Desharnais who was a decent playmaker but nothing special. Also, most of those 30 goal seasons Pacioretty had, he used his shot on the drive and shot in general to snipe without much 'playmaking' around him. Galchenyuk scored 30 once and his second best season he had 20. That was also 3 years ago so Im confused as to why you expect him to score 30 goals. This is also Gallaghers first 30 goal season and his second best was 24 and that was 4 years ago. Drouin has arguably top 5 vision and creativity in the league so shouldn't he make these guys produce? Opinions like this make me angry because their unrealistic. Sure It would be nice to have playmakers but we need goal scoring A LOT more.

My dream scenario is Svechnikov at 3rd, Kotkaniemi at 10 (after a trade of Pacioretty + something), and then we throw all our remaining 2nd/3rd rd picks at dman.

Could you imagine? In 2020, we could have :

Lehkonen - Drouin - Svechnikov
Galchenyuk - Danault - Scherbak
Hudon - Kotkaniemi - Gallagher

It's not unrealistic. Pac scored less this year, why?

Missing Markov and Radulov is probably the biggest reason.

Being unrealistic is expecting Zadina to help our offense when he'll be yet another scoring winger added to a team without playmakers.

All three of you who responded to me have an incapacity to see the big picture.

And Zadina is no Tarasenko.

How do you know Zadina isn't Tarasenko? Did you know Barzal was amazing too? How about Aho?
