You're basically hoping though. You don't know if you'll have a partner to trade down with you at 8-9, you're also completely blind on who will be available when you make the choice to trade the 3 all the way down to 11.
Fair enough. I think I'd still be alright with Smith (or whoever else drops out of the top 10) at 11 + one of Kravtsov/Farabee/Berggren over just Zadina.

the thing is, you just cant afford to have too many smallish dmen on your team, unless you want to be stuck and spend too much time in your own zone, thats why you usually draft them a bit later like Girard and company.. hugues is an elite skater and has great puck skills, but his shot is average at best and has some flaws in his own zone.. when you draft top 3, you have to take the guys with most upside and best overall package.. I think Zadina Wahlstrom and Dobson are the most logical options at 3.

No problem with that. You can't afford being too small. But I will NOT refrain from picking the best of the small players because I already have smaller average players on my team.

Honestly, in all the times I've seen Hughes play in the past 2 years, I haven't seen him get in trouble on defense directly because of his size more than a few isolated times. He gets in trouble skating with the puck PLENTY of times but almost never because he just got muscled off of it in the defensive zone. Playing against pros is a different thing obviously but personnally I'm not worried about that aspect too much. He seems to have adapted his game to his weeknesses size wise.

Same. I have zero reservations towards Hughes size, its the way he plays with the puck that has me worried. Plus his tendency to break the offensive system in which he plays. Thats a killer at the next level.

Thats another concern. He does a lot lot of Drouining out there. Works against weak competition but in the big league.... on top of that he doesnt have a hard shot at all that can beat you from the perimeter.

Basically, Zadina was interviewed this morning on that show, said he'd really like playing for the Habs, best hockey city in Canada.

Also said he followed the careers of Jagr and Plekanec, and that he talks to the latter regularly. (Plekanec to Montreal E5)

Also saw somewhere that he said he doesn't mind media pressure, but can't find the quote...

Of course could only be PR, but at least he knows the drill.

Sure It's said for PR but I do not doubt he speaks with Pleks and I am sure he would love to play for the Habs, and 30 other NHL teams for that matter.

At least it shows he is not stupid and is able to speak with the press and say the right things. A dumb kid with marbles in his mouth could find it challenging in Montreal.

But in no way am I saying we're picking Torey Krug. People are soooo afraid of his stature, I'm just saying you can thrive in today's league while not being a giant.

Yes this is definitely true.

Of course all things being equal you still want the bigger guy. There is no doubt Hughes will make the jump. I'm really not that worried about his defensive play really. I think he will lose some battles, but will make up for it with quickness. The one big question I have is if he is creative enough to make dangerous things happen at the NHL level. He can hold on to the puck forever, but will he be able to create high scoring chances? If you think he can do that.... you have to consider him at 3.

You mean like PK ?

Considering we were likely to fall to 5th or 6th after the lottery we're in a great spot. Picking 3rd we'll have our choice of Hughes or Zadina, and right now they seem to be a cut above everyone else outside of Dahlin and Svech.

Wait, so you think he just straight up lied about keeping in touch with Plekanec?

Seems really weird

Does anybody have an idea where Oscar Steen will be drafted? I got a new car on Saturday and I was playing around with podcasts on Android Auto and a guy from B.C. really liked Steen and said he was gritty and could develop to a Marchand type of player without the "evil" part.

Lol, no, I said I do not doubt he speaks with Pleks, so yes I believe it. Also believe he speaks with Jagr but only commented on his references to habs and Montreal.

He was drafted by the Bruins.

Now imagine Svechnikov comes out and says something along the lines of "Oh helll naw, I ain't playin' in Carolina, I wanna play in a real hockey city, a cold, cold city that reminds me of home. A place of ice and slush."

BAM, Carolina picks Zadina, Habs pick Svechnikov.

I'd have Hughes higher if he had a shot from the blueline. Krug has one.
Yeah , that's the one definite flaw to his offensive game (and potential game breaker as far as drafting him is concerned) . A successful offensive dman without a shot is a pretty rare thing. It's a major area where he'd have to improve and there's not a lot of precedent of guys that suddenly got good at it .

Hughes shot isn't bad. It's merely average- but good enough considering his other otherworldly skills.

I don’t think it’s good enough. Players will just clear a lane for the NHL goalie to see and he’ll be stopped. There’s no threat. I love the kid but it’s a big concern for me.

I mean Dobson won a couple of the fastest skater competitions at the CHL top prospects showcase, he’s 6’2 and has a much better shot. I’d feel better with him if they went with a defender.

In the end....we might be in a position when you actually have no choice but to pick Zadina but....it might not be the best pick in the end. Not because he won't be good. But because other might end up better. I don't think you will be wrong with him. Pretty sure you won't. For me, it will hurt seeing Hughes go. A whole lot. Let's hope for my sake that he doesn't translate.....

But BPA is Zadina after Dahlin and Svech. Hughes is No4 for me though.
