Quality over Quantity.. I only believe in trading down if you have a bunch of guys you've identified as being the same class of prospect, 7-8 spots is simply too many to jump back.

Max 4 spots for me and even that I’d likely say no. Granted, who I like probably doesn’t match the Habs, but even then, I think the consensus #3 to #6 are pretty close.

But whatever, unless a deal is amazing, just draft who we (the Habs) want at #3.

Quinn Hughes would be such an exciting pick if that's who we select. He definitely fits a need. Also it really seems like this is the direction the league is going. Of course knowing our luck we pick him and then they stop calling the clutching & grabbing...

Id love to run the numbers on the probabilities of the 3rd pick vs two picks out of the 3rd pick.

My guess, the later has better results. Twice the pick, twice the chances.

Hows his offense so far?
Honestly, pretty good ! They're sheltering him a bit ( which is understandable) but he's managed to get 2 assists in 3 games. He's moving the puck around a lot but he's been picking his spots more than he does with Michigan U . He does look tiny out there but I can't say he's gotten into too much trouble defensively because of it.

It would be great if Svechnikov fell to 3rd but seeing as it probably doesn't happen, is the drop off that significant to Zadina? Selfishly I want an impact forward at 3 ideally

Gormley? I know hindsight but still... he was highly touted and he was good.
Kulikov too.

Even Beaulieu was "supposed" to go top 10 or so but fell, often times ranked behind or in front of Hamilton.
True, I feel like even they weren't as highly touted. Gotta remember though, I've only been around so long haha.

Anyways you don't pass on a player cause players in his situation have failed in the past, because Dobson is an entirely different player with different strengths. He gives me the vibes that he is one of the safest players in the draft- elite defensively, offensively, skates well, thinks the game- there is absolutely 0 weakness, yet plenty of strengths.

The thing with the Islanders' 11 and 12 picks is you can always use the 2nds to maneuver in the top 10.

Say we jump from 11 to 9 and keep 12. That could mean one of Hughes/Kotkaniemi/Bouchard at 9 + Farabee/Kravtsov at 12. You guys wouldn't take that over whoever we pick at 3?

You're basically hoping though. You don't know if you'll have a partner to trade down with you at 8-9, you're also completely blind on who will be available when you make the choice to trade the 3 all the way down to 11.

I wanted Wahlstrom hard before the lottery, or at least a solid forward. If Svech doesn't fall to us, I think I'm about to jump on the Hugues bandwagon. Kid's gonna be something special.

I don’t know if that’s dumb. Risky yes.
Last year, Vilardi and Necas went 11/12 with Heiskanen at 3rd. I’m just thinking it might be a way to land a potential top C and top LD. But quality over quantity probably makes sense...just thinking out loud

Last year, Pettersson was available at 3, but not where Vilardi and Necas were picked. If you want a quality player, just pick him. Nevermind where scouting agencies rank him.

He is a fantastic skater... he's gonna be a player. That's for sure. The only question is whether he can thrive... especially at his size...

I had Hughes at 4....BEFORE the Worlds Championships and if anything he just solidifies that position if not....making it tough for the 3rd team that will be picking...wonder who that is....

I'm telling you all...if we don't pick Hughes we will hear that we already have Mete...who is NOWHERE near Hughes offensively and maybe even defensively. I'm breaking something if I hear Habs management say this....

At this point, Zadina or Hughes and I'm fine with that. Lucky like we are, we will regreat whatever choice we will be making. But both have extraordinairy qualities. And that's what you have to aim for.

Yeah Hughes could become really special... definitely in a different league than Mete. Plus who cares... you can't have enough fast skating, smart waterbug D...

If we could get a top notch D or C at 3 we should do that. Those positions are the key to building a great team.

the thing is, you just cant afford to have too many smallish dmen on your team, unless you want to be stuck and spend too much time in your own zone, thats why you usually draft them a bit later like Girard and company.. hugues is an elite skater and has great puck skills, but his shot is average at best and has some flaws in his own zone.. when you draft top 3, you have to take the guys with most upside and best overall package.. I think Zadina Wahlstrom and Dobson are the most logical options at 3.

I doubt that the Habs management will publicly talk about other players in the top 10

Hughes definitely doesn't spend too much time in his own zone....... And he really doesn't have defensive issues. That's just an assumption everyone makes because he's an offensive defenseman. We have lots of big D..... And spend too much time in our own end... And if it's an issue than you take the elite talent in Hughes and trade Mete. But Weber Hughes would be amazing.

Picture a Markov that can skate like Barzal.... But you won't consider him because of two inches......

If having too many small D is the issue, and it certainly could be, just keep the best one. Or two.
