Even if they would want to watch Dobson....what are they going to find out that they didn't already? Dobson is still playing against the same players he played all year long. While Hughes is playing against quite a lot of NHL'ers and is playing WITH NHL'ers......It's not even close where they should be unless....they decided that Hughes wasn't their pick 'cause they stupidly thought that they had Mete so who needs Hughes....which would be stupid X1000....But hey, let's give those guys a break. Let's bash them on what they do and not what we think they think.....
You draft based on long term projection, if you think Dobson will be the best player down the road, what I personally expect to, thats the right pick to do.

In talking with some scouts in the past, they brought up how small a group it is and how they talk so it ends up that teams usually have a good idea of what team likes what guys. So if say the Habs felt Dobson was their guy, they would also look at where they feel he will go and if they felt confident he would be there at say 7 or 9 then they could trade down if the value is right and they had a solid backup plan if somehow Dobson went sooner.

On a more general in today's NHL, I hope that Timmins stays clear of prospects with speed and or skating issues. But I've been so pissed off at this team that I expect the worst so I am getting ready to buy a Tkachuk jersey since that's the one player I wouldn't want at 3rd overall.

Gormley? I know hindsight but still... he was highly touted and he was good.
Kulikov too.

Even Beaulieu was "supposed" to go top 10 or so but fell, often times ranked behind or in front of Hamilton.

Gormley was a bum. Kulikov definitely didn't live to his billing, rushed IIRC

The Q has a crap track record as far as producing good pro dmen is concerned. A guy like Dobson is definitely out of the ''norm'' . He played his minor hockey in the PEI and in Europe so I don't even know if he should counts as a Q product in the first place honestly.

I don’t know if that’s dumb. Risky yes.
Last year, Vilardi and Necas went 11/12 with Heiskanen at 3rd. I’m just thinking it might be a way to land a potential top C and top LD. But quality over quantity probably makes sense...just thinking out loud

Last year's draft compiled some more depth at the top and keep in mind, trading the Heiskanen pick and hoping for Vilardi and Necas, at 3, you don't know they are going to be available.. you can't bank on teams being dumb enough to take Rasmussen and Tippett ahead, if they don't and teams rightfully take Vilardi and Necas ahead.. you aren't really left with anyone in the same tier of prospects.

None of us have any idea how these prospects will turn out. Tippett might be the best goal scorer in the draft. I see what you mean...it’s risky hoping two guys fall to you at 11/12 that will fill two of our biggest needs. I honestly wouldn’t be all that shocked if it happened though. I think of a guy like Robert Thomas that fell to 20 and all the hype he has around him...maybe Habs have a guy or two that they think will be in that range

Quality over Quantity.. I only believe in trading down if you have a bunch of guys you've identified as being the same class of prospect, 7-8 spots is simply too many to jump back.

Personally don't wanna drop below 10th. There's a drop-off there after Kotkaniemi imo
I guess if the really wanted to do it then they could make the trade after if they like who’s available at 11/12 and the Islanders are interested in Zadina assuming Habs pick him. It’s unlikely I know, just thinking of what they’ll do this off season if they don’t have a shot at Tavares

Theres just something so funny about the "hidden offensive potential" crowd. It worked once with Chara and everybody is after it as if it will happen again.

We tried trading up for 9 to get Morin.. holy **** we need new scouts and direction

To be fair, I’d rather have Morin than f***ing McCarron.

Another great Q defender that could have been good was Luc Bourdon. Though I had my doubts about his offensive potential going forward.
