They could bring Kravtsov to New York and have him skate with the team in practice. Have him get to know the coaches and his teammates. Some of them will still be here next season.

Back in 2004,the Rangers had RJ Umberger skate with the team in practice when they acquired him from Vancouver for Rucinsky. The Rangers didn't end up signing the player and they got a 2nd round comp pick. Umberger was an unsigned player. He skated with the team.

I think that's no longer allowed under the current CBA. It's mostly an insurance issue, but unsigned players cannot participate in practice sessions because they are not covered by the medical insurance that comes with an SPC

So they don’t want to burn the year on his contract, and an ATO isn’t likely, which means he’s not coming until the summer

Simple as that

Also, with a PTO, wouldn’t he be eligible to be signed by a different AHL team at the end? Isn’t that how those work? They have to have an opportunity to sign an AHL contract with your team, or someone else’s

We have conflicting information, since we’ve also seen claims that they don’t care about the year of ELC.

I’m assuming PTOs work differently when the player’s rights are owned by a team vs when they’re not.

No. We own his rights. No other team would be able to sign him. This scenario happens often with drafted players coming out of college. They usually finish the year in the AHL on an ATO and then their ELCs start the following year. That's what we did with Lindgren. He played 10 games in Hartford last year on an ATO and his ELC started this year. PTO/ATO doesn't make a difference in terms of rights. It's just based on whether or not the player has already played professionally, which Kravtsov has.

Given the options, I think the course of action I'd most prefer (assuming Kravtsov is ok w/ it) is for him to come over on a PTO. Travel & practice w/ the team and watch games from the press box. Get him familiar w/ the players, coach & system so he's more comfortable when he steps in next season (after signing his ELC on July 1)

There are no in-season PTOs in the NHL. Pre-season, yes. There are ATOs, but only for emergency goalies.

I wonder if he has a shot at the Russian WC team. Probably not, but it would be nice to see.

I recall Russian team used to keep a few youngsters in camp to train with the team even though they had virtually no chance to make the roster. Outside possibility (personally I’m very doubtful) but it could be him, maybe Denisenko after the next playoff round.

Even if he doesn't make the WC squad, he may play a few games in the tournaments leading up to it. It's up to the Russian federation now

While the hit on the team control and esp elc for less than most of the season, only a few games, should be considered, that is not the killer.

The damn expansion draft is involved if he plays this year. If I remember only 6 Fs protection slots.

For that reason particularly, we and he must be a bit patient.

He can play this season without affecting the expansion draft, as long as he plays 10 or less games.

So, he theoretically can play the rest of the season with the Rangers starting with 3/19 at home vs DET.

But I'm down for whatever.

I stand corrected, thank you.
However, while I think something --- the elc ? takes a full 9 not 10 during the season, something else kicks in if he plays any games.

Hopefully he just hangs out with us, checks out practice informally, does not suit up.

He'd be burning a year on the ELC the moment he sets foot on the ice in the first game. He's not eligible for a slide, since he turns 20 this year.

Maybe sit him out the days that are back to back games because that might be hard on him, and replace those games with the Calgary & Vancouver ones so AmazingKreiderman & I both get to see him ;)

He was doing an Instagram live this morning and I asked him in Russian we’re waiting in NY for you and he replied in English keep waiting bro.

well that's pretty clear then. I hope he makes it on to the WC team, even if it's just for the beginning of it before the first round of NHL teams gets eliminated and the roster starts filling up with NHL players.
